Personally I think that ALL of the countries need their transport trucks! And they should be able to tow artillery too! But that’s wishful thinking…

    • RE: Suggestions for a 100pt Tournament army using the UK?

Every time I field the British I never leave home without my Inspiring Lt, or two if I have the points to spend. Mobility is everything in this game, and if you’re going straight UK without allies you don’t get the Halftracks. So the IL are important. Vickers are sweet too. Those are the two that my opponents can rest assured I’ll have every time I bring the UK to the table.

I also field 2 Stuarts when I can. They’re nice and mobile and can often flank enemy tanks. One day I’d like to field 4, in two groups, to pull off some real flanking manuevers. We play 150-300 points, so 6 even works. But I digress… if you can spare the points Stuarts are good. I’d even go with them over the Croc, but that’s me. I’ve found that tons of lighter tanks are better than one or two heavy tanks sometimes.

Is it compatible with A&AM? Or is it a seperate game? If it can’t mix I don’t want it.

    • RE: Soviet Grenadiers Preview

I actually REALLY like that new Hand to Hand ability for Contested Skies. A&AM really needs a map segment that is a huge ruined city. The Hand to Hand and Close Assault abilities BEG for it. But I like this guy, especially when you compare him to the silly new French guy (AKA Misour Sucko).

Yea. It’s uh…. it sucks. I’d melt it down just for kicks and use it’s card as a paper airplane to simulate the planes I won’t get in my Contested Skies boosters.

    • RE: Anyone run into game stores that open and re-glue boxes?

Every set I’ve bought, from both game stores I frequent, had the exact type of glue you’e talking about. From what I gather from your description, you have the same factory sealed boxes I have paid for. Unless every store is opening and resealing boxes, but if that were the case I doubt I’d have scored the King Tiger: it’d have been in the display cases.

    • RE: Axis & Allies Miniatures Set 3: Contested Skies

They’ve already posted the rules. You can read them. It isn’t as complicated and burdensome as I thought they would have been; I was worried with the addition of two new phases.

Fold them in the other direction. That’s what I do and mine lay flat.

    • RE: The Perfect Game Board

      @surfdog:

i palyed a few games on the plastic maps and got tired of it, i wanted a 3d game board i took a 3x6 piece of plywood cut it in half and covered it with dark green felt, i decided on 4" hexagons,

Word, that’s the route I’m going on. I hope to have a hexed battleboard ASAP, and there’s a TON of 15mm WWII terrain out there on the net. I’ll just nab some of that. The mats the game comes with are OK to learn on, but to perpetually game on these drab, flat maps that have roads mostly going on one direction… blegh.

    • RE: AA Minis 3-D Rules

It’s nice too see I’m not the only one working on a 3-D version of the rules for this game. It’s looking pretty good. The thing I like about the A&AM is that they’re close enough to the 15mm scale that all those companies that make terrain for WWII 15mm historical games can be used for this game too. So it’s almost a natural progression to want to play this game in 3-D.

      :)

I’m curious as to where you read that tank ramming was a tactic used in WWII. The only time I’d heard people mention that tactic used was a fanciful retelling of the Battle of Kursk, and that was proven to be exactly that: a fanciful retelling (and one with no basis in history). But if you know of other historical battles where this was practiced, fill a brother in. Please. I could use information like that!

    • RE: Unfairness of uber-Tanks

Not at all. People who take any of those have most of their points thrown into one vehicle. So you’ll outnumber it easily, and when they lose it they have nothing left on the field. And they aren’t invincible, these tanks… just nasty. And who knows what Contested Skies will do for us who often fall victim to nasty tanks.

    • RE: German Halftracks

I don’t know where I got my numbers from, but they’re 14 pts. Jeeps are for. See kids, this is why you don’t post numbers at 4am when insomnia strikes. Anyway, besides the point totals, the idea remains the same. But instead knock the halftracks down to 7 if you remove “Fighting Platform”.

I think 7 is reasonable for a vehicle that’s mainly a transport that you’re going to send to the rear once the bullets start flying… but can shoot if it gets cornered. All of this stuff applies to the American halftrack as well.

    • German Halftracks

I’ve been trying to make the German army more… uh… “blitzkreigish” lately. For an army that was supposed to have struck like lightening, they sure do crawl across the battlefield. Their tanks are slow and their infantry are slow. They have no Jeeps, no Inspiring Lts. and oddly enough that have no paratroopers (fallschirmjaeger). But they do have halftracks and they do have Panzergrenadiers and SS Panzergrenadiers, who historically hit the battlefield in said halftracks quite often.

My problem lies in the cost for a halftrack. It’s 22 points. Yes it’s a balanced cost for what it can do, but fielding 5 or 6 gets WAY too expensive. Using 5 is 110 points! Even using a mere 3 is a nasty hit to your point total, especially since they’re transports.

So I had an idea, and I wanted to get feedback from some people. I was thinking of actually removing the fighting platform ability that the vehicle has. Yea, I know it’s a good ability, but troops usually dismounted from them once combat started. Then the halftracks would move away from the frontline until the Panzergrenadiers needed to move again. So the Fighting Platform, though nice, doesn’t really fit the use the Halftracks had (I’m talking about the base transport ones, not the combat variants).

If I remove that ability, do you think that 10 points is a fair point cost for it? It’s better than the Jeep since it can actually shoot if it has to, but it’s still a pushover unit: hit it was a tank and watch it go boom.

Any opinions about it? Corrections? Ideas?

    • RE: What strategy works for you?

Hah, I wouldn’t have believed you about the mortars vs tanks thing had I not used them so effectively last night. Well, “it”, since I only had one. Two Panzers and a brumbar had isolated a Red Devil Cpt., a Garand, a Bazooka, and a Mortar, cutting them off from the main body of the force. The bazooka couldn’t get to them without crossing open ground. So the mortar sat behind the hill while the RDC was forward observer (we use that house rule). The Brumbar was taken out by a flanking Sherman, but the mortar actually damaged one of the panzers, making it easier for help to take one of them out (the other one got bogged down by a slew of reinforcements).

So yea, I’ll never underestimate mortars ever again.

    • RE: Size of pieces-newbie

A&A Miniatures are close to 15mm models, like other wargames out there (not to be confused with 25 and 28mm famous from games like Confrontation and Warhammer). So they’re much bigger than the boardgame pieces.

    • RE: Maps

Speaking of the downloadable maps, what type of paper do you folks use to print them up? And would a place like Kinkos or Staples (or places similiar) be able to print them up if I came in with these on a disk?

I want all of these newer maps they put on the web, but I don’t know what to print them on or how much ink I’m going to go through doing it.  :? :?

    • RE: Perfect 150 points army

Wow, I actually missed that rule. 15 Unit Max? But the Soviets were based on HORDES, lol. No, now that I know about it it doesn’t change anything. It also should be noted that the armies we play are only sometimes 150. Quick battles we do 100 and there’s nothing sweeter than a 250 point battle across 8 maps pieces. Epic isn’t the word, but it’ll do.

      :)
