    • RE: Question regarding American paratroopers

Dude, I have NO idea why this new set doesn’t have the Fallschirmjaeger. With the whole “contested skies” thing, you would have thought they’d have included them. The FJ fought alot on D-Day (without dropping though… they hadn’t jumped in years), so maybe they’ll be in set 4.

    • RE: A & A Miniatures Rules, Gallery, and News

Looking at the models for the new set, I really think that I need to sell my furniture on eBay to get more. I bought 1 ooster yesterday, just for a teaser, and everything in it I will use regularly. Everything. Especially that American sniper and my stuG. Mmmmm…

    • RE: Terrain and Hex maps

Sure thing dude. My three favorite sites for it are:

The War Store: These guys are my numero uno.

JR Miniatures: Also a favorite, especially the Stalingrad stuff.

Miniature Building Authority: Yep. More good stuff.

I hope these start you off on the right track.

      No, they land once.

    • RE: Axis & Allies Miniatures Set 3: Contested Skies

It depends. Sometimes it’s good, other times it isn’t. My girlfriend learned the hardway when I went first and flooded the objective area with Paratroopers, followed up by Crusaders, Halftracks and jeeps loaded with guys, etc. It was an uphill battle after that for her. Me going first gave me time to get my artillery (we play with hitched artillery in the beginning) and reenforcements up there by turn two and having only had faced 1 round of shooting.

So it depends. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s worth waiting to see what your opponent does.

One idea we’ve been toying with is shuffling the unit cards (without looking), and that determines the order of initiative, so it’s a back and forth thing. We haven’t tried it yet.

Whoa, I didn’t know they actually sold hex blankets. I was this close to buying green felt and frickin’ stencilling in hexes. Man, the time you just saved me… where do they sell these things?

As for terrain, why not go the 3d route? They make tons of 15mm WWII terrain out there.

      @Mistelten:

The prospect of landing craft really sounds intriguing

I’m actually anticipating the Higgins Landing Craft being in the D-Day set. It better be or I’m gonna go down to WotC and learn 'em good.  :-D

    • House Rule: Soft vs Hard Cover

I’ve been toying with the idea of introducing soft cover and hard cover as game concepts for A&AM, and I’m looking for some feedback or ideas (and hopefully others might try it and tell me how it worked for them). Yes, they’re based on gross oversimplifications, but the whole game is based on such, so I don’t see this as a problem.

Soft Cover: Forests - Cover Rolls have a -1 to them, meaning that Soldiers have a 5+ cover save, and vehicles need a 6.

Hard Cover: Towns, Hills -  Normal cover rolls as per the rulebook.

Erm. Yea, I’ll explain more in a bit. I have to log offline ASAP. But I see this as being a bit more realistic and tactical without overcomplicating things. I might give the standard infantry of each nation a “foxhole” ability one of these years too, one that allows them to treat soft cover as hard cover if they didn’t move in the movement phase that turn. I dunno yet.

    • RE: Countries using units that arent their own

Hah, good one. But they should only affect Brits, since American soldiers usually complained when the bagpipes started (hell, alot of the brits did too!).

    • RE: June 2006 D-Day Booster Pack

Lets not forget that GW releases “new editions” of the core books and codices once the money flow slows down a bit. Color me jaded and cynical. But I don’t forsee A&AM screwing my wallet in that regard. New sets are fine, since I can ignore them at will, but GW…  :x

    • RE: Japanese strategies

Has Set III given the Japs anything good? My browser is being REALLY annoying tonight, so I can’t check if they got anything. Somehow I doubt D-Day will get anything for them. Blegh. One day I’d like to field them, but right now my units are on the wimpy side…

    • RE: June 2006 D-Day Booster Pack

      @djensen:

Collectible is more costly that a boardgame but it is cheaper than other miniatures games like Flames of War. The collectible nature also helps generate and maintain a community that plays the game.

Yea dude, this game is how I rectified my problem with FoW being too much money to bother with. My GF and I started collecting armies, but it just got to be too much. Yea, it looks cheap at first when compared to other wargames, but it’s still costly after paints, terrain, glue, scalpels, miniatures, game tokens, the rulebooks, etc…

    • RE: Anyone run into game stores that open and re-glue boxes?

LOL, I guess Wizards got a bunch of complaints about the old glue and were like, “OH YEA! You wanna see some nasty glue!?! I’ll GIVE you some NASTY GLUE!! Little punks tellin’ us our glue isn’t strong enough! HAH! We’ll show them strong! Mikey, break out the cement!”

    • RE: Axis & Allies Miniatures Set 3: Contested Skies

The Mustang will probably have some sort of ability to rectify that, like a +1 to hit on each die (negating the -1), and perhaps something else. If not… well, you can always houserule it. This game begs to be houseruled.

Well, my KV-1 isn’t going out to sea, but my ships can bombard the French coastline while my homeboy tries to send his planes out to take them out… that’s what I was hoping.

OK, maybe I’m blind then. The links I see tell us exactly what I just said two posts ago, or I’m missing something here.

Oh, I see what you’re saying. No, I don’t think that aircraft have AA capabilities. The cards released and the rules released don’t say they do. Which makes sense to me. The planes that do will probably have a special ability that negates the -1.
