    • RE: Most important Russian battles

      @sherman28:

      I think the Kalkin Gol battle was a victory due to Soviet guns and tanks.
      In both cases the Soviets fielded better equipment, which eliminates Japanese Esprit d’ Corps as a tactical advantage. I wonder if there has ever been a movie about those engagements!

      I don’t think so, because for one, I believe until the USSR fell, it was classified info, and two, I could be wrong on this, but I don’t think Russia has a very large film industry, and Japan would have no reason to make a movie in which they lose. Three, I think the Soviets outnumbered the Japanese, so it’s not a real good candidate for a movie anyway.

    • RE: Would the Allies win without Russia in the real war?

      @Chindit:

      Big problem of course faced by the Germans was getting their reserves into the fight.

      I thought the big problem of the Germans on D-Day was that Hitler believed that it was a fake and kept his forces waiting for the mythical 1st Army under Patton. All right, it’s the same, but different. :roll:

      @Zhukov_2003:

      so when the US did bomb these cities it was nothing but terror bombing.

      Isn’t all bombing “terror” bombing? It’s not really whether they hit or not, it’s simply the fact that there’s tons of explosives raining down on you that should cause you to give up.

      but basically, if i tell you there are no invisible elephants in this room, i dont really have to believe that, i think most people would agree with me, but if i say there are invisible elephants in here, id have to believe that. does that make any sense at all?

      No. First, define “here”, second, you don’t necessarily have to “believe” what you say.

      if you choose to do, thats fine, just be aware that when the revolution comes, you will be killed.

      No I won’t. :P

      finally, ignore my arrogance. im not stubbornly opposed to the idea of god, if something ever changes my beliefs, i will admit it, but they cant, because im right.

      Or just unwilling to admit it. :P

      Do you mean ever? I think that 1812 against Napoleon was pretty important.

    • RE: Greatest WWII Generals

      Also, whilst logistics is certainly the most unglamourous and unsexy area of war it is the most vital. Armies, no matter who is commanding them, quickly stop without food, ammunition, fuel. After the USAF and RAF did such a great job destroying French railways it became progressively more difficult for the Allies to keep their advance sustained after the break-out from Normandy. It took an awful lot more than just competence to keep it going.

      I’m not arguing about the fact that logistics is the most vital, but I do think that just because you can manage supply lines doesn’t make you a great general. Also, I thought we were talking about N. Africa, not the invasion of Europe.

      @MuthaRussia:

      USSR would have become involved either way at one point… Hitlers belief of the lebensraum, was directly related to russia. If anything the question would be would russia win the war alone! :wink:

      In that case, I don’t think so– but it would have depended on how fast the Russians got slaughtered.

    • RE: Save Yucca Mtn. Send the nuclear waste into the Sun!

      @Linkon:

      The gov’t seems to be spending tons of money these days. Why not take some of the money from the Mars mission or Yucca Mtn?

      I have doubts about the safety of Yucca Mtn. Using our soldiers to guard that stuff would make it too expensive for them.

      I actually think it’s cheaper for them to stick it under Yucca Mtn. then to send it into space, esp. given the near-certainty of one of the shuttles blowing up as it leaves.

    • RE: Greatest WWII Generals

      @Chindit:

      Ever since Saving Private Ryan everyone has started slamming Montgomery.
      In all honesty, why do so many people regard him as ‘over-rated’?
      Look at his campaign of pursuit after Alamein. The Germans (under Rommel by the way) were totally broken and forced into continuous retreat for 2,000 miles. Furthermore Montgomery’s pursuit did not peter out due to logistic overstretch.

      Hmmm…well, Market Garden was his idea, I believe, and he required a large numerical superiority in order to beat Rommel also. Keeping a long supply chain is a good thing, but I don’t think it requires a particularly competent general.

    • RE: Commercial advertising on the forum ?

      This Neppagames person uses the forum to promote their new product, not only once, but now several times.
      And instead of just giving a link (preferably once), it has to announce every new development phase to us.

      If it was a “fan” or a gamer who keeps us informed, i wouldn’t mind. But, this is a commercial ad, without paying for it, without being invited.

      I want to raise the question wether we should allow that, or not.

      I have no problem with anyone announcing any new games on this site, however if it is a company person advertising the game I think they should have to submit a request to djensen, or the moderators, if he is busy.

      If we keep allowing that, maybe that we then get spammed by tobacco companies or gun manufacturers?

      I kind of doubt that, because even with “free” advertising that could be put up on this site, it’s market would be too limited to have much of an effect. (not to mention the moderators could just remove it anyway)
