      Bob,

      Check this one out.

      http://www.harrisgamedesign.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1789

      As far as I remember the two setup cards were the same.

      As for units, I prefer the original red units.  Just a personal preference.

      I’ll check on the units being different but I don’t remember off hand so again I’ll need to check on it.

      First major difference is that Japanese units are red in the first print, they are the regular yellowish color in 2nd print.

      The Chinese units are also different color.

      I have both editions so will need to go through the box to figure out the rest of the differences.

      What I do is look on ebay and look for opened AAP with red units.

      @Imperious:

      I would love to see a video of a chimps playing AA…each wearing the various helmets or caps of each nation in full regalia.

      Imagine a chimp japanese admiral or Tojo looking fellow?

      I wish somebody here had access to chimps ( other than WOTC).

      oh well…

      I can imagine the chimps playing already, and when they get into an argument about the game, I can hear them howling, screeching and throwing poo at each other!

      As for the video, you would need make up artists from the Planet of the Apes (remake)!

      WOPR,

      I think everyone tries and comes up with a strategy but until it’s tested against good/great players you won’t know it succeeds.

      When the game first came out for the 1942 scenario someone came up with what they called a fail proof strategy for Axis, the 1-2-3 punch on Cauc.  It works against unsuspecting players and newbies but not against veterans.  Also it causes Japan to commit it’s airforce so taking Asia is harder but it gets the job done but at a heavy price.

      On paper the strategy was great but our play group implemented and it worked but only because we knew about the strategy and it was eveyones first time playing AA50.  This game was no NO and also the Russian player left Cauc open.

      In my opinion, if Allies go after Japan hard or if UK goes for a 2 IC or India IC early to stall Japan, it might work against normal players (myself included) but at what cost?  How is the European theater?  Until you factor in all aspects of the game, the strategy can’t evolve and adapt.

      AA has come a long way from the infantry push mechanics by Don Rae (although his papers on deadzone management did wonders for my game) to now.  One of the joys of this forum is learning and interacting with others.  I would have to say that most people on this site like to learn and contribute to the growth of the game.  That’s where the bids come in, house rules, etc.  But overall everyone enjoys the competition and the game, I take more pride in winning against an experienced player than against a newbie due to the challenge.  Although, dice rolls are part of the game and I don’t mind winning due to some lucky dice rolls.

      My two cents.  Good luck on your gaming!

      @Krieghund:

      @gnasape:

      Another bug is aa firing during NCM.  I had saved two Japanese ftr to reinforce Ukr and it passed over Cauc during NCM, the ftrs were not used for combat at all, and both ftr got shot down during NCM.

      That’s not a bug.  AA guns fire during NCM in the Revised box rules.

      Thanks Krieghund, so many different versions, so many rules.  I’ll remember that one!

      @Imperious:

      This is just coming from someone who has just recently started playing, take it for what it is worth, but I just wanted to say I’m glad I picked up ANY version of this game and thanks again to IL for opening my eyes towards Target, I drove 30 miles to pick up my copy of AA42 because of him.

      WOW. Thats alot! :-D

      The price is fair and you get it right away and no shipping.

      Sounds like a win win.

      Now you can print out my mega map for AA42 and not have any problems with the small OOB map.

      True but would it be possible to make the borders in Europe more defined, at my age, my eyes aren’t that good!  Just a thought IL!  Still awaiting my tips!  :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

      @LuckyDay:

      well, there is the WOTC decoder ring packaged in AA42 that is the real reason to get it.  without it you won’t be able to get info from WOTC about new releases until  right before it comes out…

      Just get it because it’s AA!  I hate the map but love the new sculpts (yes, others may disagree but compared to what they had previously, it’s great, it feels heavy and better quality).  I consider it as a cheap investment in pieces.

      I plan to use IL’s big map printed and laminated as the map instead of the game board.

      Thank you Adlertag, Krieghund!

      Only took, 12 minutes and 2 seconds for the response and 44 minutes and 59 seconds for the official answer guy to concur.

      It’s not 30 minutes but still pretty good.  Let’s work toward 30 minutes!

    • IL do you have a Big Map for AA 1942?

      Ok, I finished setting up the board for AA 1942 to see how it looks, Europe is too small compared to Asia!  It’s way to crowded and the borders are nonexistent!

      IL would you have a Big Map for AA 1942 (one with highlighted or white borders so that Europe can easily be seen)?

      One that I can print and get it laminated?

      Thanks in advance.

    • Krieghund: Ftr move question

      Krieghund:

      Scenario:

      US has it’s fleet in Sz 48 (Borneo): 1 dd, 1 AC, 2 ftr, 3 subs, there is a dd block on Sz 49 (Phi).

      Japan has 1 sub, 1 dd, 2 AC, 4 ftr, 2 bb in Sz 50 (Japan), 2 bmbs in India, 1 bmb in China, and 2 ftrs in Persia.

      Question:

      Can the 2 ftrs from Persia participate in a Naval battle, assuming that Japan clears Sz 49 which would free up acess to Sz 48 to allow for 1 AC to move in the NCM.  Also, there would be 3 subs left in Sz 48.

      I am thinking this would be a legal move as subs wouldn’t hinder the AC from moving during NCM.

      Thanks in advance for the answer Krieghund.

    • RE: Open letter to Larry Harris: Feedback on your excellent creation

      @Veqryn:

      it entirely depends on if you are doing NOs or not (and also slightly depends on 1941 or 1942)

      I think WOPR was talking about 1941, I assume NO and tech from the way he was inferring.  I could be wrong.

    • RE: Endangered Species

      I have multiple copies of the game so I feel that Larry Harris/AH/WotC/MB made money off me.  As for AA50 being out of print, I’ll say it again, search your small local hobby store.  There’s one store in HI that still has AAE, AAP, AAR, and the last time I checked AA50 in stock.  This guy has a small store filled with all kinds of board games.  If you put in the effort, you will find it.

      As for my self, I still have my 2nd copy of AA50 in it’s original box.  Had the hardest time convincing my wife why I needed 3 copies.

      Heck I still remember one of my friends getting AA Classic map hand drawn with the initial setup on regular size paper (in color) and having it laminated so that we could discuss strategy and use it for PBEM.

      We’ve come a long way but still as the game gets more complex the longer it takes to setup and play.

      @a44bigdog:

      gnaseape I use Abattlemap to record the positions of the pieces for my face to face games for the same reason, the dreaded attack cat.

      You can zoom in and out with battlemap but if I remember correctly the piece sizes stay the same. As Battlingmaxo said it really dose not take that long to adjust to. On this comp battlemap shows probably 3/4 or so of the board and that works to me as oppsoed to some of the other programs where all you can see at one time is Europe.

      Since AA50 is slightly larger than the table I have for my face to face games looks like we will have to get a cheap lap top for playing AA40P and AA40E. Which would suit me fine anyway.

      We tried one time but the wait between the FTF game drove me crazy, I was running all kind of different scenarios in my mind and it drove me crazy so we make it a point that the game has to end by the end of our sessions, our sessions last about 5-6 hours and with AA50 that’s not many turns with everyone being new to AA50.

    • RE: Open letter to Larry Harris: Feedback on your excellent creation

      Same here WOPR, I’m new to AA50 but understand that two IC’s or India IC isn’t that hard for Japan to knock down.  Even in revised unless you are playing no bid and all Allies go KJF holding an IC in India is hard to do for more than couple rounds.

      So I’m up for a game as Axis on AA50.  I’m willing to learn.  No sense keeping this big strategy away from the AA world.

      If it’s good it should be shared with the forum.  God knows how many people tried or trying to solve the Japan problem.

    • RE: Don't get how Germany can handle UK and Russia with the bombing…

      Deathtwinkie

      This is the championship game that’s going on right now:

      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=14929.0

      The games can be found in

      Axis and Allies.org Boards > Play by Forum > Play Boardgames

      The play boardgames are for open to anyone, there’s tournaments and also league play.

      It’s very helpful to browse there games, you need to download AA Battlemap so you can download their maps at the end of their turns to see how the board is setup.  The great thing is that all the moves are posted.

      There are so many games and everyone plays a little different but I find that usually there’s a consensus on certain moves that are made on G1/I1/J1 for Axis.

      Good luck and good gaming.

    • RE: Don't get how Germany can handle UK and Russia with the bombing…

      If all UK/US are doing is SBR, then where’s Japan and Italy?

      As for Japan, it starts off with 17 IPC but ends up as a Juggernaut.  It might be you are too used to AA classic.  Try a game of revised and then transition to AA50.  AA50 is a totally different game compared to Classic.  Your traditional buys and tactics that worked in Classic doesn’t really work.

      In terms of IPC, Germany should be able to get at least 2 NOs (+10) after the first turn.  That’s at least 41 IPC.

      I would suggest reading the tournament or at least the league games in this forum to see what great players do on G1.

      As for Allies being overpowered, we have to agree to disagree.

      Good luck on your games.

      @Battlingmaxo:

      @gnasape:

      For AA50 we are now PBF as it’s easier for time but not for making moves as staring at a map program is not a fun thing to do.

      It took me about 2 full turns in my first pbf game before I could plan on Battlemap….I had the board set up did my moves there and reconciled the battlemap. The other day I set up AAE to putz around…what a pain to set the board up.

      I recommend a 2 monitor setup to pbf…so you wont have to collapse the map every time you want to type a move

      Agreed, I have the notepad open so I can type my moves and move the pieces at the same time but the map is only so big compared to the monitor. Unlike you I can’t setup my board or my cat will chew on the pieces and knock everything down!
