      But that weakens the UK a lot, in exchange for a country that can only build in faraway Canada…

      Not really.

      The British lose 8 IPC’s from Canada, which is about a third of their Europe income…

      The gain of having useful french IPCs makes up for it.

      Mech all the way.  I tend to buy them more often than tacs.

      How so?@Tall:

      @ghr2:

      I would think the the commies do not have a capital, just like nationalist.  They only way they can be liberated is if soviets take some chinese territories.
      ––But the COMMUNIST CHINESE do have a capital,….it is called Pingliang and it’s marked on the map as such.

      Hmm, wasn’t it 12 IPC’s that could be spent on troops in Siberia (for Russia)? Or am I misremembering?

      First Edition of G40, yes, not the Second Edition.

      I know there is a guy who lives a little bit south of Rockford who plays as well as a few folks around Gurnee.  Most of my friends play in SE WI around Milwaukee or Kenosha.  It all comes down to how far are you willing to drive.  We usually do global 1940 or that Global War 1939 map.

      @Narvik:

      @ghr2:

      I choose LL because it better shows the apparent skills of the player(s) and how effective a strategy can be.  Losing when u have overwhelming odds in your favor and winning when you have crap odds ruin the game for me.

      I beg to differ. A skilled player must know his dice. If you play LL the computer did the job, if you roll dice you must know when to gamble, when to stop and when to walk away. Dice takes more skill and knowledge than playing the dull LL. IMHO.

      The computer rolls the dice too…  it is called: Random Number Generator.  Dice and LL can happen face-to-face or on some software version of the game.  There is no such thing as knowing when to gamble when the dice can swing in any number of ways.  There is no way to predict whether the dice will favor a player or whether they are about even.  The idea of ‘knowing your dice’ is just common superstition that places like casinos profit off of.  The only ‘skill’ for dice is being able to run a mental cost/benefit analysis and weighing that against the probability to win.  This skill also holds true in LL since both involve proper allocation of resources.  LL works if you want to minimize risk and focus more on in-game strategy and to truly determine who is the superior player without one side potentially getting overly bad or overly good dice rolls which may affect a fair skill comparison.  Dice works when you want simplicity in combat(not adding dice and dividing by 6) and if you like the potential dynamic game that it can bring.  Yes dice can breed skill in being able to adapt to bad dice rolls, but winning when getting lucky rolls does not make you look good and losing when having bad rolls does not necessarily make you look bad.  It also allows for occasions where a bad attack is made worse by even worse dice.  Then the attacking player tries to claim that he/she got diced while the defending player tries to claim that the attack was already doomed in the first place.  Dice just has too many variables for a fair assessment.

      Anyway, if you want to do dice, you will probably have a game that is very dynamic and has a lot of excitement.  But be ready to have a player be pissed or to be in a sour mood because their strategy was destroyed by dice.  If you want LL then be ready for a game that has some dynamic action but mostly straight, predictable, and usually very fair to both sides in proper skill measurement.

      @Narvik:

      Don’t mind the Egypt factory, when you are UK and want to keep your NO bonus you really should put some effort into keeping Malta.

      That would not be very cost effective if you are trying to hold Malta.

    • RE: Germany in Africa

      The only issue is that it takes time for the axis to make up for that type of investment into the med.  Russia will have a few turns of relief before UK’s hold on Egypt and the med collapses.  It is too hard to tell if the German med strategy is truly viable.

      @coolrunner:

      Of course the US is better dealing with the japanese fleet in the pacific. But this english fleet shall hold and protect is transporters. The then big thing is to distract the japanese to move against you which can make an opener for the americans… This is the dynamic in this game :) That side that are the best to move around and can keep the middeleast wins the game

      I just do not see a great allied game if the med is surrendered to italy so quickly.  Italy can get a lot to africa quickly if he is left ignored.

    • RE: Germany in Africa

      @Argothair:

      What about having Germany build a minor IC in Romania on G1 and then in Bulgaria on G2? If I’ve got the rules correctly, you can build 3 units a turn out of a minor IC whether the territory is worth big bucks or not. Bulgaria is very easy to take on G1 – you just walk right into it, and it comes with its own free defensive garrison. Like SZ 97 (Yugoslavia / Adriatic), SZ 100 (Bulgaria / Black Sea) is only two sea zones away from Egypt, so you can launch a direct attack on Cairo from transports built in Bulgaria. You can also launch a direct attack on the Caucuses via Bulgarian transports, or send mech. infantry and tanks north to support Barbarossa, or send infantry and artillery to invade Yugoslavia and Greece, both of which are immediately adjacent to Bulgaria.

      Having ICs in both Romania and Bulgaria lets you drop six units a turn into the Black Sea – for example, a transport, a carrier, two destroyers, an infantry, and an artillery. You’re very close to Russian planes, but it’s not clear that the Russians can afford to take enough losses in the air to sink that fleet.

      Bulgaria’s a weird gateway to Africa, but if you’re just looking to stick a German infantry in Cairo, it might be the best way to do that.

      I thought Bulgaria was only worth 1 IPC.

      So if it doesn’t use a first strike ability… it can’t be hit?  wtf.

      Pretty Much, it makes sense for game balance, but not so much for realism.

    • RE: Japanese philosophy (video)

      @Zhukov44:

      J1 is as strong as any without a doubt, but its biggest strategical downside is that it gives away Axis intentions early and even takes away certain axis threats that would otherwise remain in place, requiring more cautious play from the allies.

      True, but I would say J1 is at least as optimal as J2 if Axis is going for economic victory because it might speed up the conquest of Eurasia.

      I’d argue that J3 is economically inferior (for Japan) to J1/J2 but can be appropriate if Germany is undertaking some kind of offensive against UK in the Atlantic region.

      Another reason to like J2 is sometimes Japan can set up traps on J2 if the Allied player makes a mistake turn 1.  But I like to assume that my opponent will make no mistakes, which is part of why I’ve been more interested in J1.

      J3 is not so bad if the allies position themselves poorly in the Pac.
