    • RE: How to handle the Italian fleet R1?

      @SubmersedElk:

      Why would anyone NOT do the Taranto raid? What’s the alternative benefit from using that fleet elsewhere that can compensate for leaving Italy with opportunities to contest Africa and the ME?

      Preserves your fleet for later use, makes yourself a constant threat to italy.  Also helps to deal with Sealion Threat and gives you a better attack on tobruk.

      How do I go about reworking a game’s mechanics and such for TripleA?  I know I can edit pieces and IPCs, but how do I use the actual map editor so I can change more things?

      Subs being detected or not should have no effect on whether the defender can scramble or not.  The detection matters when the planes are rolling dice and how you determine potential hits.

      @SS:

      I did say no sneak attack for the whole battle. Same thing. Now maybe have rule were you can scramble 1 plane for each destroyer 1:1 with the no subs sneak attack first shot with only subs attacking.

      Yea but scrambling should be determined before you decide to sneak or not.  Since the destroyer causes a sub to be detected, I would say that up to 3 planes per airbase can scramble so that they can hit that detected sub.  When the detected sub dies, the destroyer detects a new one if it is still alive.

      @SS:

      1.  You agreed to my answer back in the 7.2 Sub and other questions from recent playtest, game notes thread.

      2. No they don’t get all territories.

      1.  The planes could always scramble, that should not be in doubt.  The issue was when can they see the subs to hit them.  You don’t decide on sneak attacks before the battle, which is what we did in our recent game.  You decide on sneak attacks at the start of each round of dice rolls.

      2.  Even if Sweden was entirely pro-axis already?

    • RE: 7.2 Questons…Things that have come up.

      @SS:

      1. No  Page 34 rules  Subs are undetected if not using first shot attack and any rounds after. Subs do have thee option to first strike shot on any round. Then planes can attack any round if Subs declare first strike shot.

      2. Sweden is a strict neutral. If Germany lands in the Capital it does not get the other territory. The other territory or territories are free game for either the Axis or Allies to activate.

      1.  But you can still scramble anyway since there is a naval battle going on.  And destroyers can still detect subs on a 1-to-1 basis.

      2.  Not what I was asking.

      Two rule questions:

      1.  Can planes scramble to defend a season being attacked by subs if the attacker declares he won’t use his sneak shots before the battle?

      2.  Can a bomber transporting an infantry activate pro-axis or pro-allied neutral that used to be a strict neutral?  Like if Sweden is pro-axis, can Germany land an infantry with a bomber in the capitol and claim everything?

      @Oddbjoern:

      I have never played tournament rules either but in OOB rules his suggestion would be very imbalanced. Dont really know what neutral Italy means, can he still buy and move internally, just not attack or is he siting our completly in round 1? A bid of 20 that can be placed anywhere is also alot as ColonelCarter stats with perfect examples.

      Italy would not be able to attack.  I think just that.

      A friend of mine wants to set up a game of 1914 with the standard tournament rules.  On top of the rules, he wants Italy to be neutral round 1 and the centrals to get a 20 bid.  Is this balanced?

    • RE: Germany's fate in Japan's hands?

      @teslas:

      You don’t need to take Calcutta by any set time. All you need to do is reduce UK Pac to 5 IPCs a turn and keep them too scared to come out again. Throw a sub or two outside of Calcutta for good measure. In fact, Britain has to make a mistake to let you take Calcutta by J3, or even J4.

      If US is going to go full Atlantic for four rounds, ing awesome. Japan should just about win the game for you, or at least be making as much money or more as the USA by J4/J5. And yes, your fate is in their hands. The only thing Germany can do under that kind of pressure is use its initial land units to get up to Novgorod (and then maybe get kicked back out), and spend everything else on defending itself from both sides. I also suggest you help out Italy, as with a good amount of support, and not getting too unlucky, Italy can make decent money and either help defend the French mICs from an invasion, or keep the southern flank of your Eastern front safe. The last thing you want are a bunch of Russians or British running unchecked through the Balkans. Italy being strong enough to help means Germany can put more force into an objective, which is a good thing.

      If USA went 100% Pacific for the first four rounds, the roles would nearly be reversed. Japan would make a lot less headway after J3 while Germany would be the one making strong, consistent progress. USA gets to decide which side of the map has the Axis struggle. Thems the breaks.

      Japan can set up to take India round 3 if he plays right, round 4 he can guarantee it no matter what india does.

    • RE: How can Japan help if Germany does Sealion

      @calvinhobbesliker:

      No, Japan is way too far away from Moscow to threaten anything so early. By the time they get close to Moscow, the Russians may already be in Berlin.

      Soviets are usually stopped long before they reach Berlin

    • RE: United Kingdom Strategy (Video)

      @innocentbystander:

      @Young:

      @innocentbystander:

      I’m sorry but I just don’t get this Taranto Strategy. Please excuse me (as I am a newbie to G40, but played A&A for 30 years) but why, why send the entire British Fleet to Davy Jones locker if it isn’t even necessary?

      Just bring the cruiser over from the Atlantic, smack the ships north of Libya with the two fighter planes, lose the cruiser, do Tobrok UK1 (with the strat bomber from London, Tac Bomber from the carrier, and all the land units in North Africa that can hit it), land the strat bomber in the territory next to Tobrok, land the Tac bomber in Cairo for scramble, land both the fighters on the carrier, move the two Int from Egypt to Transjordan to support the French just North, and DON’T MOVE the ships from north of Cairo. I don’t think the Italian fighters can reach the British fleet and the Italian fleet, all seven ships, they can’t seriously challenge the loaded Aircraft carrier and Tach Bomber scramble. They are defensive ships not offensive. And besides, turn one, they are focused on sinking French ships.

      Never leave the Med. Never let the Italians control it, cut off ALL their money. And never move the Med fleet in range of the German Luffawaffe. If you want, you can move the ships in India over to Africa and hit the Italians to really put them completely out of the game (turn 1) and totally crank the Brit money. Then on Turn 2, that India transport is now reinforced the Brit carrier in Cairo. The Italians can NEVER overpower it. They don’t make enough money to add to their fleet or airforce.

      What does Taranto gain the Brits? I don’t want to “grow a pair” because the Italians are always going to scramble (why wouldn’t they) UK can’t hit the Battleship with just overwhelming numbers. If both only roll par, okay, you sink the battleship but you’ve lost, everything. I mean everything. By turn 3, Italy probably has Cairo and by turn 4, a serious challenge to the middle east. Forget it. I’ll keep my purely defensive fleet, choke off the Suez Canal and deny Italy the med money.

      A common circumstance during games with new players is that Italy will dominate all of Africa and the middle east due to a very passive UK player. The Taranto raid is simply a quick show and tell demonstrating that an aggressive UK player can neutralize Italy. Perhaps my use of the phrase “grow a pair” was immature and disrespectful and I apologize, my goal was to address the courage needed to try a Taranto raid for the first time… like I myself once needed. Your strategy seems very sound and others have brought to my attention strategies very similar, I look forward to shooting my next UK strategy video where I give more options as I am always learning myself. However, the Taranto raid is still viable and used by many experienced players on tripleA, I myself hope to use something different like what you’re suggesting if it can provide similar results.

      Cheers.

      Thanks for the excellent response.  I only wish I lived in Toronto so I could play you guys.

      The more I think about it, it just makes sense to hunker down in the sea zone north of Cairo in range of ALL of the Italian fleet but NOT in range of their airforce.  Never leave the med, stay right there, protect Cairo and Trans Jordan.  If they want to attack your carrier, let them.  They have you ever so slightly outnumbered but you have them completely and overwhelmingly, outgunned.  On defense (only) with the Cairo scramble of Tac bomber, you would butcher them.  And even then, all they could do is send their two fighters alone against the French ships south of Monte Carlo.  That is extremely risky.  The French could… win that battle.

      If you hunker down now Germany is pressed.  Germany is FORCED to help Italy with ships and planes in the med (and you wont see those Germans until Ger-3 at least) which means, you gain time and money, lots of it.  And whatever resources Germany has to send to help Italy secure the med are resources they are NOT using on you for Sea Lion and pieces that have no use vs the Soviets.

      I don’t know, I don’t think I would ever risk Taranto.  I didn’t mind the term “grow a pair” because it is the perfect phrase, I just don’t have a pair.  I have no balls for that raid.  If you win decisively, you gain a little bit, if you win “par” (you lose most but kill the battleship) your carrier is dead on Germany 2 and your planes (if Germany didn’t kill them with the carrier) are stranded in Africa or wherever and now you are chasing Italy.  If you roll bad, the game is… over.

      Cheers

      I would suggest crushing Torbruk or stacking 92 if Taranto is not your cup of tea.

      @Der:

      Thanks for the sharp analysis and comments, guys - I see a good excuse here to put in some entrenchment, blockhouse, mine, AT Gun, and MG rules for Russia!  (admitted house rule junkie speaking - lol)

      I did offer the house rule of TripleAs having the optional Anti-Tank rule, similar to their Anti-Air function.
