    • RE: Drako's Tanks House Rule - Tank Classes

      I posted earlier in this topic about an expansion set from HBG ( Bring in the Heavies) to check out the rules. As far as sculpts go they have 12 different types of sculpts;

America- M36 JACKSON heavy tank destroyer, M6 medium tank, T28 super heavy tank.
Germany- VK1602 LEOPARD light tank, JAGD E-50 tank destroyer, JAGD TIGER heavy tank destroyer, TIGER !!§ medium tank, VK4502 medium tank, MAUS super heavy tank
Japan- Type 3 HO-NI 111 tank destroyer, Type 2 HO-RI heavy tank destroyer, Type 5 CHI-RI heavy tank destroyer.

In the OOB game there are 15 sculpts ranging from mech infantry to heavy tanks. I don’t see anywhere that you can order these pieces without purchasing the game, perhaps you could persuade them to part with some.

Unfortunately those are the only 3 nations involved in this game so you would still have to find sculpts for the other nations.

    • Axis and Allies Mediterranean

I used to have a game years ago from the Gamemaster Series that the original A&A game came from called Conquest of the Empire. Many of you might remember this game, it was from ancient times and each player was in it for them self like Risk.  The game had it’s problems ( the dude with the most catapults wins) but the thing I liked about it was the playing map.

There aren’t many places on earth that you could find that would be a better setting for a new A&A game. The other variants of the game ( D-Day, Guadalcanal, Battle of the Bulge) are either land based or sea based games. A blow up of the Mediterranean Sea would be a perfect setting for a full sized game. Not only would you have an interesting sea zone with significant islands but it is also surrounded by a number of different nations all vying for control of the region. I love playing the ground game in the Europe edition but it is lacking in naval play head to head. The Pacific game has good head to head play between navies but the powers are all so far apart and it takes hours to get them to engage each other in a meaningful way. The Med would enclose the naval play in the middle of the board while providing land combat all around the sea. One of my favourite zones to play in G40 is the Med but much of the fun is gone there after the first 2 turns when one side takes control by eliminating all of the other sides boats. Wouldn’t it be cool if that battle was much more complex and lasted longer?

      Make it so.

      Engage.

    • RE: Playing Solo

I have played many times this way for years. Regardless of who’s turn it is I assume the role for that nation and and do my best to succeed as that player. I don’t see knowing what my opponent is going to do as any sort of problem at all because I play the game the same way when there are other players there. Before making a move I consider every possible move that my opponent can make and I make my move accordingly. Whether it’s an offensive move or defensive I consider all options and I’m rarely ever surprised with my opponents move. I think the reason I’ve gotten so adept at that is because of all the games that I’ve played solo and I’ve spent so much time at the table planning the moves for the other nations both friend and foe. The key to playing this way is to have a place to play where you won’t be in anybody else’s way. That way you can play one move or one turn or hours at a time without having to clean up the game so it doesn’t get disturbed. You just pick it up where you left off the last time you played.

The good news is I have won every game I’ve ever played this way. The bad news is that I have lost them all.

I have nothing but time on my hands right now because I’m recovering from major surgery so I’ve spent the last couple of weeks setting up a game room with a table large enough to fit a G40 board. I purchased AA1914 a few weeks ago to relieve my boredom so I went online to try and find out more about the strategy for the game and that’s how I found you crazy addicts hell bent on global domination. You’ve all inspired me to upgrade my games with pimped out maps and playing aids and that has given me something to do for the next few months until I can get back to work. I have my game set up now and I play a turn or 2 per day in between reading the forums and searching for more industrial complexes online. I’m also thinking of getting some zeppelins for my 1914 game to see if I can even the odds a bit on that one.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands right now if I can spend hours thinking about tiny zeppelins.

    • RE: HBG's Amerika Game ON KICKSTARTER NOW - FUNDED!

My copy of this game is in the mail and I’m hoping it will be here in a week. Can anyone tell me if it’s a good game now that you have had some time to play it. Do you need to order anything else to make it complete?

    • RE: Drako's Tanks House Rule - Tank Classes

There is an expansion set on HGB for the Amerika game called Bring In the Heavies. It has 12 tank sculpts with rules on how they are to be used. I know you want to make your own rules but maybe you could take a quick look there for some ideas. I tried to post a link but I can’t.

    • RE: The Cliffside Bunker House Rules

First time poster here so forgive me if this has already been discussed elsewhere.

I am intrigued by your modified rules regarding research and development. I have been playing the game since 1983 and the one house rule that we used that has remained consistent all these years through various versions of the game is our rule regarding r&d. In the classic version all five powers rolled a die at the beginning of the game to acquire a weapon. After all five had one then Germany and Japan decided between themselves who would get a second weapon to even the number of weapons between the opposing sides and then they would roll a second die (usually Germany). Play would begin at that point and there was little need to purchase dice for r&d since everyone already had a weapon.

The purpose of doing this was to make each game unique. Every game had exactly the same starting point and after a while became quite predictable to experienced players. The only thing that made each game unique before this rule adaptation was the level of experience of the players and how much you could take advantage of that as an experienced player as well as the luck of rolling in key battles.

When you consider the number of combinations you could possibly have in the Global40 edition each and every game would be truly unique to any other game you have ever played. The level of skill that you need to play this way would increase as you would have to develop new strategies each time to both counter the weapons combination you face and utilize the weapons combination that you have to work with. It makes the game more fun as well. When you think back on all the games that you have played over the years the ones that probably stick out the most are the ones in which you had at least one weapon to work with because that game was out of the ordinary for you. With this rule you would have a weapon every single game you play.

In the Global40 game you would roll the die in the established order of play. It would be a waste of time to give France and China a weapon since China wouldn’t be able to use it anyway and lets face it France isn’t much of a factor in the game. Realistically you would think that their ability to develop a weapon would be severely hampered in the political situation of the 1940’s as well. After ANZAC (or Pacific UK as your rule exists) rolls then the axis would get one more roll and must decide which nation gets a second weapon before the roll.

I would recommend that you roll the die and then decide which breakthrough chart you want to choose from based on what your roll is. I can’t tell you how many times that one side would surrender a game before it has even began because of the bad luck when rolling weapons. We would have to re-roll for all weapons again or be stuck with with wasting hours of our time chasing a forgone conclusion. For example if Russia gets super subs and US gets rockets while the axis powers all get weapons that they can actually use then the game would be horribly skewed for the axis. If each country had 2 choices based on their roll then you could avoid this situation.

I do really like your incentive based r&d rule though. I will give it a try on it’s own and then maybe combine both our rules to give each power their initial weapon and provide the incentive to acquire more as the game progresses.

I also want to thank you Young Grasshopper for your videos on YouTube. All of the players that I used to play with have moved away from the city where I live and I haven’t found anyone else to play against yet. I have been trying to learn how to play Global40 on my own and it’s been very helpful to me to have someone explain the rules because, as you know, the rulebook can be hard to follow as you pointed out in your videos. I’ve only been able to play 3 games of G40 against other players to this point (with some confusion between our interpretations) so I’ve had to interpret the rules on my own and I’ve learned an lot over the last week from watching your videos. I’ve also downloaded your map which will be ready from the printer tomorrow. I went with the laminated paper finish. Cheers!
