      I’m not so sure about spraying your map with something SS. I would worry about it reacting with the ink but really I have no idea what would happen. From what I understand this cold laminate is just a clear sheet of something that they stick on top of the vinyl so there is no heating it up.

      Thanks for subscribing Wolfshanze. I’ll try not to bore you too much. One of the reasons that I’m making these videos is that I have trouble finding people to play with too. At least I can interact with others in the comments section and get away with talking about the game while I’m playing without being a weirdo for talking to myself, lol.

      I wasn’t going to get the laminate either because it was a vinyl map but the guy at the print shop talked me into it. It’s not the vinyl that I’m protecting, it’s the print. I have 2 other vinyl maps (Amerika, A&A 1914) and I notice that some of the ink comes off when you try to clean them. Plus, a spill on them might stain your map depending on what you spill and how long it takes to wipe it up. The cold laminate only goes on the top side so that’s why using paper wasn’t an option for me. It wouldn’t have been protected on the bottom or the sides from a spill or wear and tear over time.

      I have some extra white stuff here in my driveway if you want to come and get it. Every kid in your neighbourhood will want to come over and play and you will be the coolest guy on the block.

      It might be kind of cool to draw mountains on the map instead of just having a shaded area that says Impassable.
      This is an example of what I mean on this game although I think you could do a better job;

      Thank you for your comments Arthur I will attempt to be more clear in the future.

      I have purposefully avoided downloading and playing the game on the computer. The reason I play this game is because it is a board game and I love board games. I don’t use a calculator for odds I go based upon my assessment of the situation and how risky I’m feeling at that particular moment. I can see the attraction to use the computer for doing all of this but to me I like the human aspect of playing with plastic pieces on a board and pitting my wits against another human without the benefit of calculators. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting anyone down who plays the game the other way, I just don’t want to sit in front of the computer and play the game. I work on a machine and interact with a massive amount of computers and programs that would put any computer game to shame so it’s no wonder that I would want to get away from that in my downtime. The only downside is that I don’t get to play against the great players that are here on the forums. Some day maybe but not at this time.

      If I were to play the same strategy again I might make different choices as I rarely do the same thing exactly the same way twice. I have rarely ever lost a game of A&A or any other board game in my life and yes I used to play against some very good players. I’ve just always had a extra sense for playing board games that I can’t really explain or understand myself even, it comes natural to me.  If we all lived in the same town I would love to play a game with you and the other people on here, not just for the competition but also to interact with you on a personal level as well. Maybe that’s why I love board games so much. I do appreciate your comments though and like I said I’ll try to be more clear in my videos in the future.

      I’ve been playing around with strategy for a few weeks on my own trying to find an alternative to attacking the strict neutrals. Thanks Afrika Korps for inspiring me to try something new to get the Italians unglued from Southern Europe. This is what I’ve come up with so far;
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxSfedTpnbI

      It’s not a perfect strategy because it forces the Japanese to wait until turn 3 to do their main attack. I might have to buy that player a beer to get him to go along with it.  :wink:

    • RE: Safe Russia strategy

      You have to pick your spots carefully when you are being aggressive. You don’t do it if there is no economic benefit to it just for the sake of being aggressive, you only counterattack when you can come out ahead in the exchange. If the German player is competent and on top of their game then you may not get a chance at all and have no choice but to retreat. Every player makes a mistake now and then though you just have to be ready to make them pay for it.

    • RE: Safe Russia strategy

      I like to counterattack as much as possible with the Russians against Germany. You have to take a good look at it first though to make sure that each counterattack is in your best interests. I do this to keep as much money in Russian hands as possible and out of German hands so that you can continue to build as many units as possible until you are overwhelmed. Hopefully you can last until the Americans show up in Europe and draw the Germans away from the Eastern Front.

      I made this video to demonstrate my Russian strategy, it’s about 38 minutes long;

    • Custom Map Choices

      I picked up a new G40 map this week. I liked my old one but it had a distinct glare to it. I had to keep the blinds closed or I wouldn’t be able to see anything. I also made it a bit larger, 36 x 78 instead of 32 x 72. The little bit of extra room makes a difference.

      I made a video of the 2 maps side by side because I get questions from my viewers on Youtube on what they should do to get their own map as well as comments made on this site from people looking for tips. If You’re thinking of printing out a custom map from one of the awesome people on here that have taken the time to painstakingly create beautiful maps then check this video out first before you spend a pile of money and get something you aren’t completely happy with.

    • RE: The Afrika Korps

      I have been following along with this discussion since the beginning. I ran a number of scenarios over the weekend in regards to building a German fleet in the Med. It looked to me like it was a really good idea but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why you needed to do a neutral crush. This game isn’t a race to see how fast you can achieve every one of your objectives by turn 4 or turn whatever for that matter. It is much better to set your ultimate goal and try to achieve it step by step with alternate moves that you can do each step of the way.

      First you ask yourself " Why am I going to Africa?" For me the answer is;
      1. The money. Take the money for yourself and take it away from the UK.
      2. Give Italy a role in the game besides being the can opener for one turn and a turtle for the rest.
      3. Draw America’s focus away from the Pacific and Europe.

      All I need to do to accomplish those things is get a medium sized German fleet to the Med. I don’t need to crush any neutrals or have a solid plan for defeating Russia. The Russians can wait until the 4th turn when my focus changes to them and there are German troops already in Africa. Even if the UK attacks my fleet when it gets there I have already accomplished a lot. First I have successfully faked a Sealion attack by purchasing only boats on the first turn. Second I have provided Italy with 2 of their NO’s by taking out Gibraltar (Italy takes Greece) and North Africa (with their help) upon arrival. And last I have killed virtually every single boat and plane the UK have when they attacked me. This whole time Italy has saved all of their income and now can build a navy which put them in the game. UK will have a difficult time taking Africa with any speed (if at all) due to a strengthened Italy and and small German force that made it there. They will have an even more difficult time if I add in a heavy duty bombing campaign against London since my planes won’t be busy for the next couple of turns anyway.

      Germany doesn’t have to mortgage the farm to do all of this. Yes it will take longer to reach Moscow but like I said it isn’t a race. I don’t believe that the UK can take out my German fleet and with the IC on Southern France that I take on turn 2 I can add to the fleet before the Americans get there. If they don’t then I will add more ground units to Africa and start making my way to the Middle East. When the Americans do come across the Atlantic if I play my cards right that navy plus the Luftwaffe can take out the American fleet and set them back 3-4 turns until they are ready to sail again. That gives me all day to walk to Moscow.

      Having the fleet instead of a ton of bombers gives you more options too. After the British are defeated you can send the fleet back up north to assault London if the Americans go against Japan instead of Europe. You can build up your bomber fleet slowly and have both if you want. Every step along the way take what your opponent gives you instead of planning every single move and purchase for the next 4 turns. Did I mention it isn’t a race?

    • RE: Global 2nd edition Q+A ( AAG40.2)

      The reason for the question is that I was wondering for the sake of the Italian player if he lost his boats first if the UK player would then break off the attack or if they should do what you said and lose the BB last. My guess was that the transport would survive in this case but I just wanted to confirm that. Ultimately, I’m just trying to understand if I should scramble the fighters in a Taranto Raid or not.

    • RE: Global 2nd edition Q+A ( AAG40.2)

      Here is the situation;

      Taranto Raid. U.K. brings a fighter and a bomber down from London, plus an Aircraft Carrier, Cruiser, Destroyer, Tactical Bomber from SZ 98, plus fighter from Malta.

      Italy scrambles 2 fighters into SZ 97, Germans scramble 1 fighter.

      After the first round the UK gets 4 hits and Italy gets 5 hits.

      Question-Italy loses Battleship, Cruiser, and 1 fighter, and UK loses Carrier, Destroyer, Cruiser, fighter. If UK were to break off their attack does the Italian transport survive or is it lost with the other ships?

      All of the strict neutrals go pro-allies. That’s my understanding of it anyway. The rule is on page 39 of the Europe Rulebook.

      Thanks for the suggestion Ichabod. I have been thinking seriously about doing just that. I’ve been checking it out for some time now but I think I would like to find other players locally who would be willing to learn and play a game that is that extensive first. For now I’m having fun making videos and improving my A&A skills.

    • RE: HBG Global War 1936-45 (started at 39)

      I found out where the question and answer section is Bill but it won’t let a person ask a question unless they are signed up. I searched around and could not find anywhere you could sign up. You could try contacting HBG and asking them how to sign up to their forum. This is all I found, it’s in the FAQ;

      http://www.globalwargame.com/www/dwqa-questions/

      Honestly though, I don’t see why it would be a problem to discuss the game here like you did because this section of the forums is dedicated to the Global War game. I always read new posts in this section because I’m thinking of purchasing the game down the road sometime and would like to know more about it.

    • RE: How to deal with the Italian fleet in UK1?

      I try to wipe them all out by the second turn using every boat and plane from London to Calcutta. If you can eliminate them all on the second turn then Italy will only be able to move troops down to Africa once during the game (probably with only 1 transport by then). U.K. will be able to secure the continent that much quicker and move on to other tasks like resupplying India and being a general nuisance to Italy and Germany on the continent of Europe until America arrives to the party. Sure, it would be nice to save your U.K. fleet, but why give Italy any chance to make a serious impact on the game? Scuttle them hard and fast and start counting your money. Just don’t forget to leave some aircraft in range of the Italian coastline in case they start to think they can rebuild any boats.

    • RE: Advise for concept definition and name "Interception Threshold Gap"

      If I’m following along right it seems to me that you are looking for a “Point” and not a “Gap”. Yes there is a gap there but you’re searching for the point to which you would recommend not using the fighters. Is that correct?

      I would consider shortening that term or at least give it a name that you could use an acronym. For instance Fighter Interception Gap would be “FIG” or Fighter Interception Point would be “FIP”. Another one that comes to mind is Fighter Interception Threshold “FIT”.

      I don’t know if this helps but I wish you luck.

    • RE: Which is strongest side, and what to do about it?

      I’ve only been reading these forums for about 4 months now. I had a lot of time on my hands so I was able to read quite a ways back into the older posts. It almost seemed to me that most people enjoyed playing the Axis more and spent more time developing strategies for Germany and Japan. You can see why that is, those powers have more units on the board at the beginning of the game and therefore are more fun to develop strategies for. Also, it provides more options for developing strategies with more units to work with. As a result, the strategies for the Axis are more numerous and well developed.

      I’ve always enjoyed playing the Allies more so as a result my Allied strategies are more developed. I feel it’s much more of a challenge to win against long odds and I like that challenge. That being said, I don’t know how well that would hold up against the quality Axis players here on the forums. I might need a hefty bid or a bit of luck to have a chance.
