    • RE: Introduce or Re-Introduce Yourself (Dec. 2018)

      Let me reintroduce myself I’m GeneralHandGrenade from Prince George, BC, Canada. I like long walks on the beach and singing in the rain…oh wait this the wrong site for that.

      I’ve been playing A&A since 1984 and been a member of this site for about 2.5 years. It’s great to see so many more new players getting into the game. I’ve noticed it not only on this site but on Facebook and YouTube as well. One of my favorite things to do is play with little plastic army men on the internet. I get such a kick out of knowing that over a quarter of a million times people have watched me do that over the last 2 years.

      My go to game now is HBG’s Global War 1936-1945 and I’ve seen a large growth in that game over the last year. People keep asking me what they need to play the game so now that I’ve been playing that for awhile I’m going to put together a comprehensive list over the next week or so and release it on my channel. Unlike any version of A&A there isn’t a complete game that you can purchase, you have to build it yourself. Look for that before the new year as well as a continuation of the game that I’ve been playing for a few weeks now.

      Here’s hoping we can throw some dice together sometime!!!

      @all-encompassing-goose
      No.
      The CCP was established in 1921. The PRC wasn’t established until 1949. This game takes place before 1949.

    • RE: We need an allied playbook.

      While most Allied strategies are reactionary, the US is a nation that you can actually build a strategy for from turn 1 and stick to if you think it is being effective. When I’m playing the Americans I will almost always start the game with the London Calling strategy. The strategy only lasts for the few 3-4 turns and it’s purpose is to prevent an early game Sealion. It’s also a trap for the Germans and will lead to the likely demise of the German player if they insist on doing Sealion.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0ZYQ-C4i28&t=19s

      Assuming that Germany doesn’t fall for that trap and they head east, that’s when you transition the American units into another strategy. It’s good if you don’t do the same thing every time especially if you are playing against the same players for the most part. If I choose the Europe side then I will set up a floating bridge to the Med and combine forces with the UK to take out Italy as quickly as possible. The trick is to meet in SZ 95 on the same turn to build a larger defensive shield for the transports. The US takes out either Northern or Southern Italy and the UK takes out the one the Americans didn’t take. That leaves no possibility for Italy or Germany to liberate Italy. From there it’s on to Berlin. After Italy is gone it might be advantageous to move both fleets out to the Atlantic to continue the assault from the UK.

      The other choice is move most or all of the American fleet from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The Japanese might be thinking that they have an easy road and weren’t in a hurry to take advantage in the Pacific. Now all of the sudden every penny that that the US has spent is on it’s way across the Pacific. Neither strategy has to be reactionary but at the same time you have 3-4 turns to decide which direction to go. You can even decide to split up the forces but that hardly ever works out well against stiff competition.

    • RE: French Strategies for 1936

      There is no guarantee that any of the French territories will become Free French. The only place one of their proposed capitals could be safe is London, but of course you can’t move any French units there until both them and the UK are at war. That’s why it’s important for the Germans to take France all in one turn. Well, that and so Britain doesn’t drop units into France.

      I did have one game where France survived the whole game but that was because Germany smashed Russia instead. It was a brilliant move by them though check it out;

    • RE: We need an allied playbook.

      The mechs can’t get to Southern Italy if you also take Northern Italy on the same turn. That’s the whole point of doing the double landing on the same turn. If S. Italy is stacked that early in the game then they couldn’t have accomplished anything in the game. I also try to have at least 2 landings from the UK ready to go (the first from Egypt when the UK fleet enters the Med and the second waiting in Libya) and of course unlimited amount of landings from the US. Italy is easy to to take out, Berlin not so much. The hope is you can get there (Berlin’s doorstep) before Moscow falls so you draw German resources away from Russia. If you’re going for Europe then you only send enough to the Pacific to keep Japan off of Hawaii. You can’t do both.You have to choose.

    • RE: Air Transport logistics

      @ghetty said in Air Transport logistics:

      I’m just trying to figure out the logistics of Air Transports. During a non-combat move, can my Air Transport fly from one zone to an adjacent zone, pick up an Infantry, fly to another adjacent zone, drop it off, and then return to it’s original zone (assuming I’m within it’s 6 or 7 move limit)?
      Thanks.

      Thanks for bringing to our attention that this was omitted in the rule book. The Air Transport may continue to move up to the limit of it’s movement capacity after it drops off an Infantry class unit on Non-Combat Movement and then land in a friendly territory. The Air Transport and the unit being transported do not have to begin the turn in the same territory. The Air Transport may only transport 1 Infantry class unit per turn.

    • RE: UK Strategy -"Middle Earth"

      The London Calling strategy all but guarantees that Germany will lose their entire navy and eventually London if they are foolish enough to go Sealion on G3 or G4. Combining it with Randy’s strategy would allow the Allies to make early landing in Europe on the western front. What concerns me though is leaving Italy to fester instead of putting them down early in the game. I’ve always been a Kill Italy First kind of player on the Europe side of the board. I have found from past experience that taking Rome out before Moscow falls gives me the best chance for victory when I’m playing the Allies. This is why I advocated earlier in this thread to take the UK out with the Germans. By leaving the Italians with a navy things will get out of hand quickly for the Brits. I like Simon’s suggestion of strafing the fleet with the Italians and then mopping them up with Germany. Depending on the rolls that might just work.

    • RE: Wartime Economy

      Under the current rules it doesn’t say that you can’t do it. However, V-3 rules have a separate reference card for Free France which states that Free France cannot research Technology.
      That’s not the only change. It says that FF can place units at any Allied factory and that FF can invade Vichy territories.

      @shadowhawk
      I don’t think you understand, Bud. When Krieghund issues a ruling that is an official ruling and it is final. Regardless of what your opinion is or how you try and spin the rule book, the official ruling has been made. Now it’s time to move on. Argue for the next 10 pages if you have nothing better to do but it will not change the official ruling.

    • RE: Question about Vichy

      You still track the Vichy income on the income tracker. However, the money goes to the conquering nation (Germany) every turn. The Vichy units are only able to defend if attacked. If they are attacked, all remaining Vichy units and territories join the side that didn’t attack them (Free France or Germany). They would become active again at that point. In Version 3 they experimented with allowing Free France to wage war with Vichy France but it didn’t work out well. Basically it gave the Allies an advantage because they could attack the Vichy with no recourse for the Axis and it wasn’t a fair fight between the FF and VF. Germany could do nothing but watch their Vichy colonies get picked off one by one.

    • UK Strategy -"Middle Earth"

      tambo had started a thread on Aggressive UK Pacific Strategies and I had suggested trying my strategy that is up on Youtube. I don’t want to highjack his thread so I’m starting this one to lay out my “Middle Earth” strategy.

      The first 3 turns are in my video;
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4vpY_DGQJY

      You can substitute moves around (like taking artillery to Iraq instead of a tank, moving the tank to Anglo Egypt Sudan along with 1 infantry from Egypt to stall the Italian forces on Ethiopia). What is really important is to take Persia and Iraq on UK1. The reason for this is so that you can place your IC on Persia on UK2. You need to get it there as soon as possible because you only have a limited amount of time before Japan assaults Calcutta and/or Germany assaults Moscow.

      Once you’ve started your 3 transport shuck as detailed in the video, don’t waver from your plan or your strategy will fail. The whole point of this strategy is to put as many units smack dab in the middle of the board so the axis will never be able to take them out. Hence the name “Middle Earth.” Your unit purchases should look like this;
      Turn A- 30 IPC’s
      Persia- 1 fighter, 1 mech, 1 tank
      South Africa- 2 infantry, 1 artillery
      Turn B- 31 IPC’s
      Persia- 1 fighter, 1 mech, 1 tank
      South Africa- 1 infantry, 2 artillery
      Alternate between A and B every second turn. Stay the course on these purchases and don’t be tempted to build a navy instead.

      simon asked me why not just build an IC on Iraq instead of a Naval Base on Persia. The answer is that if you put the IC there, you will be further from India and your Middle Earth force will not be as mobile and able react anywhere. Shucking troops from SA means you can land them on Egypt, Iraq, Persia, and Eastern Persia in one move. You would need to purchase fast movers which are more expensive to move them around like that from an IC in Iraq. Putting the Naval Base on Persia also means you can move your troops to Egypt from Persia, Iraq, or Eastern Persia. Think of it as an inverted triangle where your forces can all move around the triangle in one move. One other benefit is that it is almost impossible for the Axis to take over SA, whereas if they bust into the Middle East they will get 2 IC’s. By bringing one of the transports down from the Atlantic you will not have to purchase any. He also asked why I didn’t stop in Brazil and activate them with the Atlantic transport. You need to start your 3 transport shuck as soon as possible so you can’t stop to smell the roses. Also, you don’t want to be taking any of your units from London and inviting Sealion. The US can use those extra 3 infantry in their assault on Europe.

      You will be getting more money than what I showed in your buys. Here are some ways you can spend it;
      1. Place units on London
      2. Upscale purchases like fighter instead of mech or tank instead of artillery
      3. Purchase the odd transport in Persia and move it to Sea Zone 81
      4. An airbase on Egypt wouldn’t hurt but not a priority

      What you don’t want to spend your money on;
      1. Paying down damage on facilities in London unless Germany is building for a Sealion attack
      2. Purchasing a bunch of boats and sailing them to the Pacific or the Money Islands. Stay away from Sea Zone 39. If Japan comes after your boats lead him away to the South Atlantic and then send in the Americans and ANZAC against their depleted navy.
      3. Don’t be tempted to attack Turkey!!! This is a barrier that keeps the Axis away from Middle Earth.

      As far as the UK Pacific goes, don’t purchase anything except infantry. Everything else will be coming from Middle Earth. Once Calcutta gets bombed don’t pay down the damage until you save up enough money to pay down and purchase units. Japan will just keep bombing if you keep paying down the damage. Make sure you spend all of the money before they attack Calcutta though, you don’t want to hand them all that money.

      As far as Russia goes, purchase mechs and tanks and move them to Northwest Persia. Don’t cross the border into Russia until the last minute so that Russia can continue to collect their N.O. If they are not collecting it then go ahead and move units in. I don’t care what anyone says, if Germany can take Russia in 5 or 6 turns, then you’re playing Russia wrong. Despite what popular opinion says, turtling as Russia and waiting for the assault on Moscow is the wrong thing to do. Buy yourself a tactical bomber on turn 1 and learn how to counter-attack like a boss and you’ll hold on for much longer than 5 or 6 turns. This is an example of what I mean;
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq17jkmkuHc

      As far as Africa goes, don’t worry about losing Egypt early in the game. I actually prefer it if Italy takes them out because then I can get rid of them faster by using transports to counter-attack instead of chasing them across north Africa. After you clear out the Axis forces from Africa, build a garrison of units in Egypt and a garrison in Libya along with some air power. Keep your warships in SZ 81 in case you need to go into the Med to take out any Italian or German boats. Slowly build up transports in SZ 81. When the US makes it to Europe (hopefully the Med), you will be able to gang up on Italy. Let the Americans soften up the Germans first if you haven’t built up enough in Calcutta and Africa.You don’t have to rush through the game like the Axis does. Have just enough units in Egypt and Libya so that you will be able to transport them to Rome/Greece from Egypt and a second wave from Libya. The US can take Northern Italy and UK can take Rome or if Italy has built up send them both to Rome. They will have their boats in the same SZ so it’s unlikely that the Germans/Italians can eliminate them. Build up on Europe side as the Americans first so you can make up for the lack of UK in the Atlantic. Don’t worry about Japan, just keeping shucking 2 infantry to Honolulu so they can’t capture it. Of course you might have to change that strategy if Japan does go after the US. If they do then they will never get Calcutta with the Middle Earth troops building up there. Japan has to commit every resource to get Calcutta and even then they might fail if you send almost everything from Middle Earth there. Here is the American “Floating Bridge” strategy that works well with Middle Earth;
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHkjC0E42d0&t=1198s

      I’ve been perfecting this strategy for quite a while now. At this point the Axis can’t beat me no matter what they do. I never use a bid either. If you can beat this strategy then by all means tell me how so I can start winning games as the Axis again. Don’t just speculate either, play it out and try to beat it. Play it on the tabletop or on Triple A. Make sure you stick to the plan though so you can give it an honest test. The only thing I haven’t tried is using Sealion against it. Obviously that would mean you couldn’t start building there on the third turn, but at the same time you would be turning Russia into a superpower. Go get Berlin, Comrade, don’t hold back.

      One thing is for sure, with that many tan units in the Middle East you will take away all hope of them attacking the strict neutrals. If they do, blow them a kiss from across the table and thank them profusely for paving the road to Berlin for you. Pick up the free infantry in the Middle East and Africa and make them pay for kicking the hornet’s nest in Middle Earth.

    • RE: British attack on Belgium

      There is no provision in the game for borrowing money from the bank. Given that the UK would need 10 IPP in hand (whether their own money or an Allies money) in order to have the ability to declare war on a minor power. Doing it the other way would be like buying a tank on your purchase units phase and then paying for it on your collect income phase.

      Militia have changed a bit in V-3. You can build as many militia in a territory as the territory is worth. So if the territory is worth 3 you can build 3 militia there per turn. You can also build them if there is no point value but you are limited to building one militia. You can only build one militia in a captured territory no matter how much the territory is worth. You have to own a territory at the beginning of your turn in order to build a militia there at the end of your turn.

      On a side note, I have seen the expansion set for the Chinese Civil War. It is awesome. I thought ho-hum when it was sent to me but when I looked I was really impressed. I was always bored with China but I can see it being a big improvement in the game. Sorry but I can’t give you any details, you’ll just have to wait until it comes out.

      Armoured Cars are not going to be added to the base game this time. I think they felt that it was more of a WW1 thing than WW2. That doesn’t mean that you can’t add them into your game though. The rules for them are already in the Expansion sets.

      SPA will play like a regular artillery with 2 exceptions; 1. they move 2 spaces and, 2. they can pair with a tank to blitz. Of course they will cost 5 instead of 4 too.

      The Gurkhas are mountain infantry that will also have first strike in jungle terrain.

      No worries I agree with you that it’s better to know now than 6 months from now when everything is printed and distributed to the whole community. It’s a stressful time for the rules people trying to put the finishing touches on the game, especially with all that’s going on in the world around us. We all have lives outside of the game that have been disrupted and most of us have been quarantined in our homes but we are all doing our best. Thanks for helping us out not only with that but with all of the other helpful suggestions. I take everything I read from these forums plus comments on my channel and pass them along to help make it a better game. In the end it will be a game that was created with the help of the whole community. We can all take a bit of the credit for the end product.

      The rules weren’t as clear as they should have been. The FEC doesn’t have a Home Country OF IT’S OWN. That hasn’t changed since V-2. It was probably written the way it was because ANZAC now has their own Home Country. What it means is the same as in V-2, That the FEC Home Country is Great Britain. They can absolutely purchase Minor Factories and place them as per the rules. They can’t upgrade them to Medium or Major Factories though because they aren’t in Great Britain.

      @kaiserschmillhelm Ok so I contacted the rules guy on a related matter. After talking it through with him we determined that France would be able to use British railroads and rivers as a Lend Lease path. He will be adding to the Errata to reflect this interpretation of the rules. It seems that with all of the changes from V2 to V3 that this was one sentence that was overlooked.

      Basically what it will say is that you can give others permission to use your railroads and rivers for use with a lend lease path.
