Dunkirk surpassed all industry expectations, and the concerns were legitimate since I was worried a film about a non-American operation with no American actors would struggle somewhat. The movie does demonstrate the power of Nolan’s brand, as well as a very effective ad campaign. There’s still room for war movies, but they better bring a lot to the table.

The crew strapped freakin’ IMAX cameras onto Spitfires, if you can’t appreciate that then I don’t know what to say. You don’t see dogfights like these in any movie, be it with miniatures or with CGI.
This is very much a visceral movie, putting you in the shoes of a soldier, civilian and pilot. If you have access to 70mm or IMAX you have to see it in those formats.

RE: Nintendo SNES Classic Confirmedposted in General Discussion
I still have my old SNES in a box somewhere.
What’s the advantage of buying this over exhuming the original?
Smaller, modern video/audio outputs, no danger of the game cartridges being damaged to becoming unplayable.
Other than that, probably not much. If you have the real thing with the games you want, there isn’t really reason to get this.
It is sad to hear stories of Atari and NES cartridges deteriorating, I wonder how my good friend’s SNES games are doing after he dug them out of storage. That said I’ll try to get this as long as Nintendo distributes these properly.

Meh, don’t read too much into that stuff, we live in a HOT TAKE society now. Everyone has to write in hyperbole and whip up controversy to get attention.
I remember the sentiment that Nolan’s last film -Interstellar- was an unabashed rah-rah “America saves the day” movie. It’s one of my favorite films of the decade.

RE: Anniversary edition reprint announced at Origins?posted in News
That is great news! I will for sure picking up a copy as I missed last time around. It will be interesting if Italy will have the Global sculpts and each country each own artillery piece.
On that subject will the game use what are now the old AAA rules and thus have generic sculpts since they can be captured?

I still can’t believe the Chargers will be playing in an expanded soccer stadium that can only hold 30,000 people. Then they’ll be moving to the Rams new stadium as distinct tenants, not co-owners.
Meanwhile there is a very good chance the Raiders could wind up moving again within ten years.
If St. Louis desperately wants a team (they’ll need to be suckered into building a new stadium) the Jaguars seem to be the best bet.

I’ll definitely be picking one up! I suppose Avalon Hill wants to make this the flagship A&A game since it’s less intimidating (in price point and rules like neutrality) than Global.

The downgrading of the German IC is interesting, and actually reverts to the first edition setup. It’s the equivalent of a bid for the Allies since it would slow down the massive German mobile stack for a turn unless they invest in upgrading the minor or possibly put one in Romania.
I also like the idea of the US treating mechanical infantry like conventional infantry.

Well for the AFC it’s a coin flip between the Patriots and everyone else. For the NFC I’ll go with the Giants, the Pats finally get another crack at them.
As a Jet fan I’m hoping for a true crash and burn of 2-14 or worse instead of a more costly 4-12 or 5-11. I want Sam Darnold!

RE: WAR ROOM - New Larry Harris Gameposted in News
Larry’s earned the benefit of the doubt, let’s see what additional details emerge. I’m still waiting for Flashman to comment on the railroads.
Perhaps there could be sculpts of naval, army and air “groups” with hidden markers underneath that differentiate size, specialization and other tactical factors.

RE: D.B Cooperposted in General Discussion
As vast and remote as the woods of the Pacific Northwest are I have to figure he would have been nabbed by the G-men at some point. I’m guessing he never survived the jump.
The 70s were a wild time, since DB’s brazen caper was followed by the Lufthansa Heist in 1978; while it was not as elaborate as the legendary Great Train Robbery in England (this was just a bunch of mobsters using a crooked airport security guard) it lives on in American lore (and is immortalized in the classic film Goodfellas). For the ringleader the hard part was not pulling off the robbery but tying up all the loose ends that emerged afterward.

RE: NHL Regular Season 2016-17posted in General Discussion
I agree with everything you say GHG, but as LHoffman pointed out Bettman is merely doing the owners’ bidding, which is the role of the modern commissioner. The position is no longer a “caretaker of the game” but a pit bull used in mauling the player unions during collective bargaining agreements.
The funny thing is Nashville fans should have been appreciate of Bettman since sunbelt expansion and team preservation is one of his primary legacies. Let’s see the result of this Cup run on the Predators’ TV ratings next year, which were laughably low this season.
Sitting out the Olympics will be a huge mistake for the league and its branding, I figure the owners will have to blink eventually.

For poor YG at least Subban doesn’t get his name on the Cup nine months after leaving Montreal.
It also feels like a lot of Cups have been awarded in the loser’s building, which certainly doesn’t help Bettman when he’s presenting it.

Guess no one here caught Pittsburgh-Smash(blech)ville fever. For all the parity Bettman espouses it seems like it only applies to losers in the Cup Finals, since winners have been usual suspects the last ten years. Of course the cap has hit the Hawks and will affect the Pens but when you have two superstars it’s not hard to mix and match a supporting cast.

RE: Star Wars Rebellionposted in Other Games
Out of the box the component limitations work well to represent logistical limits; the Rebels will get a more representative fleet once Nebulon-B Frigates are added in the expansion. If anything more fighter minis like A-wings, B-wings, TIE Bombers and Interceptors would round out out the vessels in the Original Trilogy nicely. =I’m very curious to see the mechanics of the Imperial Bunker (which must surely also shield a Death Star).

When he describes the game as being different from A&A I wonder if there be mechanics for events and leaders.

They’ve come a long way from their ST TNG movie reviews, with their Phantom Menace takedown being their coming out party to the world.
Their monotone Covenant clip is a good contrast to one of my favorites, Grown Ups 2:

Well, when this flops it’ll be mostly Chinese money going down, I guess.

Well I certainly need to see more. I didn’t like the look and lighting of the bridge of the other ship but hopefully that’s a minor quibble.
