    • RE: What's the cheesiest thing about Global 1940?

Back to NOs: If the Russian “spread of communism” NO can be abused, the British Empire NO hardly sees the light of day. Can’t it just be kept to major Commonwealth cities and strategic territories? Ontario, Union of South Africa, Egypt & Gibraltar? The Axis can still grab Gibraltar to cancel it but Italy holding British Somaliland is not exactly a massive blow to national prestige.

This is also a map nitpick, but since there was so much room on the Arabian Peninsula, why didn’t they throw Aden in there? Could give the UK an extra landing spot when things get hairy in East Africa. Turkey probably should have been divided since it is such an enormous shortcut to the Middle East for the Axis (or the Balkans for the UK).

    • RE: Japan's NO

Certainly begs the question if a pre-emptive declaration that early is worth it for UK and ANZAC. Reinforcing Yunnan helps keep China relevant and could help defend India, but as mentioned Japan can start swiping money islands and get some substantial bonus income in R2. I guess if Japan sends everyone home R1 you could have some wiggle room for a round.

UK Pacific will need all the help if can get defending Calcutta, a move like that is tugging on Superman’s cape.

Good point on the Russian NO, the only thing I could say tongue-in-cheek is that even though socialist movements wouldn’t take hold until post-independence for many African countries, the Soviets would have a population more receptive to their kool-aid/ideology as opposed to a traditional colonial power.

The China thing is frustrating at times. If Japan could sacrifice its entire war effort for a victory in Europe, why not let the Generalissimo and Mao march their men to Moscow or Calcutta for the impending invasions?

    • RE: Does anyone else play a slow game as Japan?

The game does frame the dilemma for Japan pretty well: slog through China for little economic gain while ANZAC and India fortify themselves or strike first to catch them off guard. The NO for trading with the US is a nice carrot for curbing aggression, but it can be offset pretty quickly, especially by the DEI.

I believe there have been polls for preferred start times for Japanese DOW, R1 has gotten popular, but R2 seems to be the standard.

    • RE: NHL 2013-14 Season

It’s about time the Wings moved east (and Winnipeg west), but I don’t like the clumsy division names. Don’t bother attempting to group such geographically disparate teams into “Atlantic” & “Metropolitan” (Raleigh? Columbus?). Let’s bring back Norris, Smythe, Patrick and Adams.

I give Torts two months before he curses out the wrong Sedin twin and causes a revolt in the locker room.

    • RE: Indian Troops take persia, who does it go to

Right, the UK should take full advantage of the Commonwealth and have Ottawa operate as the backup European capital. At that point the UK player could help the US mount a liberation campaign from Canada or put all its resources in South Africa to help out Egypt.

That’s correct. In Global, all income from the European board except for Western India goes to the London treasury.

    • RE: Can Russia survive? (Alpha +3)

      @wittmann:

Makes sense Jen. I like it.
Still need to make Canada a temporary UK Capital too!

That ties to maverick_76’s idea for nations retaining treasuries and production after a capital falling. For the US, If DC were in trouble or about to fall the government would have definitely already have made a contingency to move to SF (or Chicago, but it’s not a VC). It also allows UK to still do something immediately after Sea Lion and as previously mentioned allows Russia to have one last (dying) breath. This does hurt the Axis since it robs them of immediate IPCs and they don’t benefit from the continued operation as much.

    • RE: Japanese Victory Condition

Japan should get some sort of symbolic NO bonus for occupying all of China (akin to Italy’s Roman Empire NO), but I can’t imagine adding any more victory cities. If anything it can match China’s Burma Road bonus.

    • RE: New Stalingrad movie due this year..

Wasted $10+ and three hours on Pearl Harbor at a theater. I’m glad I’ve forgotten most of it, save for the aforementioned Baldwin cameo.

I would assume the music used for the trailer doesn’t reflect the soundtrack for the film but it still struck a nerve for me, it was totally inappropriate and hit a wrong note.

Poor lighting and baffling music choice in the trailer. Looks like this is on par with Pearl Harbor (could not believe Alec Baldwin delivering such cliched lines as Jimmy Doolittle). The visual effects are probably lousy.

Would be nice for Hollywood to use ever-evolving computer effects to give us anthologies of the European and Pacific theaters.

    • RE: Which movie sequel was the WORST?

I didn’t want to read any comments on Into Darkness for fear of getting any spoiler tidbit. Let me just say I was stunned (not in a good way) by the third act. I could forgive the plot holes and shortcuts but the shameless recycling was unforgivable. Not looking forward to the most obvious sequel of the last 20 years.

Final Frontier is lousy, but not nearly as unconscionable as Nemesis. At least it gave us the ultimate ego trip of Shatner directing a film in which Kirk takes on God.

“What does God need with a starship?”

Nemesis ruined any chance of the TNG crew making another movie and put the franchise on life support.

The Habs are the Canadian club with the best shot at a finals appearance. Always pays to bet against Vancouver.

Rangers-Caps is starting to become an annual rite of spring. Monotony aside, I’m thrilled the Rangers don’t have to play the Habs or Penguins.

      @Flashman:

Watch ALL Plinkett reviews before reaching conclusions on SW & ST.

Plinkett’s reviews are all must-watch, and you have to start with the ST ones to adapt to his style. Also never thought I would see a Plinkett reference even on a miscellaneous A&A board.

Also while it’s not a complete disaster Godfather III deserves mention since it was such a disappointment compared to predecessors (yes, even more than the SW prequels, the trilogy had already lost steam by the end of Jedi).

The Axis are much better suited for a neutral crush: things have to be going very well for USSR or they will get pounded by the extra infantry from Sweden and Turkey. Same for UK in the mideast.
