    • RE: Coast Artillery

Look at it from a theoretical perspective and it’s quite simple.  All those “conventional 150mm howitzers” you’re building for 4 IPCs don’t have the range to retailate against weaponry of cruiser caliber or above.  So they’ll sit there on the coast under bombardment and like it!

If you don’t like it, then your answer is to create a house rule for a coastal defense / bunker fortification that can be built :)

I have been fooling around with a rather simple fortification/blockhaus rule:

      limit one per territory
      10 IPCs

When attacked via land or by amphibious assault , rolls ONE retaliatory bombardment die at 4 or less.
Roll is made after any incoming bombardment fire from attacking vessels and you take an applicable hits.  Any casualty you inflict is immediately selected and removed from the board by the attacker. The blockhaus DOESN’T roll a defense die in combat from then on.

Additionally, any hits you take during the rest of the battl against infantry or artillery in that territory are negated by saving throw if you roll a 6.

If the territory is captured, the fortification/blockhaus is removed from play.

    • RE: How will Rommel get to Africa?

Actually, the Germans won’t need transports to get to Africa

In E40, their new undead zombie legion technology allows them to just walk across the Ocean/Sea floor at the rate of 1 sea zone per turn.

      Or maybe that’s in next year’s Axis & Allies Collector’s Sci Fi/Punk Edition  :-P

      @Brain:

Yes thank you kcdzim and IL, I was incorrectly thinking of how the word “scalable” was being used.

It doesn’t mean you can climb it, BD. :-P

On the contrary - you certainly can if you have a house rule for Gebirgsjagers! :-)

Come on Craig you could have some fun with it and not violate the NDA.

All you’d have to do is drop a line like, “nukes are in the game as technology.”   Now just step back and watch the fur fly for the next 2 months

    • RE: Does anyone buy Tactical Bombers?

Using your example of 3 fighters 3 tac buy vs a 5 bomber buy

You looked at the offense and cost, so now look at the defense:  21 vs 5

A Bomber group attack has range and striking power, but is vulnerable to counter attack.  Which means you need to spend money on defensive units to protect them or strike limited targets that keep you out of counter attack range.

A Fighter tac-bomber group has less range - or the same with an investment in carriers -, but has almost equivalent striking power to the bombers and good defense in case of a counter strike.

Each is situational.  I use both strategies together to great effectiveness.

Guys did you not see?  The listed price is $0.00!  WOTC must have realized that they totally screwed up with Pacific 1940 and now for a limited time Europe 1940 is pre-ordable for a discounted price as a way of saying thank you to the A&A fan base.  Better reserve your copies quick before the sale ends!

    • RE: Global Gaming Table

      I don’t own a dining room table.

However when I purchased AA40 Pacific and pre-ordered AA40 Europe, I did purchase a slightly used solid mahogany wargaming table with a dark cherry finish that seats 10, and now I’m picking up and refurbishing victorian style antique upholstered chairs to match.

So I guess at Thanksgiving this year I’ll have to break out the fold out card tables and stools again

    • 2 New Rules for AA40 - Naval Minelayers+Mines & Fortifications

Two house rules I’m submitting on Larry’s website. May appear long and complicated, but I wrote them up as I’d hope they’d be detailed in any real published rule book.

      1. Naval Mines & Minelayers/Sweepers:

If at the end of the turn, a Minelayer is stationed inside a sea zone it controls it deploys a minefield (Use a mine marker to denote a mine field). Minefields are persistent on the board for 1 full turn after they are deployed . After this, the minefield is removed from play (Mines drift out of position, may sink/dud/explode over time, so unmaintained minefields becomes less effective, etc.).

Minefields can only be deployed in sea zones adjacent to island or coastal territories.

All naval units moving into a zone with a defending enemy minefield present must pass an initial preemptive D6 roll for minefield damage from the defender. This roll also applies to submarines moving through the territory and not attacking. Submarines persisting in a sea zone with an enemy minefield present must make a minefield roll each turn as if they were moving through. Minefield rolls only occur once in a battle - prior to the first round of combat.

A roll of “1” results in a casualty for the attacker - attacker’s choice. These casualties are removed before they attack. Only naval units may be removed as casualties. Hits taken to carriers that would otherwise prevent the launch of aircraft do not prevent attacking aircraft from participating in combat in that sea zone or a subsequent amphibious assault during that same turn – they are considered to already have been launched. Normal rules regarding aircraft recovery for damaged carriers apply.

      Minelayer
      Cost – 8 IPCs, Attack – 1, Defense – 1, Movement – 2.

Max of 2 per nation and their minefields don’t stack in the same sea zone.

If a Minelayer makes a combat move into a sea zone with an attacking force it becomes a Minesweeper and any defending minefield is negated. The Minelayer defends at a “1” in addition to any minefield rolls that occur at the start of combat

      2. Fortification:

      Cost – 10 IPCs, Attack – 0, Defense – 0/3, Movement – 0.
Fortifications represent more than just a bunker or a pillbox. A fortification notes the construction of a significant fortified line or coast of earthworks, minefields, and defensive emplacements designed so that even a token defensive force can take a serious effort to dislodge.

Fortifications are purchased and placed in a territory under the same rules as AA Guns. They cannot move, and more than one cannot be purchased per territory.

Territories with a fortification give a +1 modifier to any coastal bombardment attack rolls.

A territory with a fortification defends with a preemptive roll at 3 or less each round as long as an allied land unit – infantry, artillery, mech-infantry, or tank - remains alive to garrison it. The defender chooses this casualty – it must be a land unit. Fortifications with no land units defend at “0”, but enemy units may not blitzkrieg through a territory containing one.

Finally, fortifications are not taken as casualties in battle or captured. They are considered demolished when the territory is captured and are then removed from play.

    • RE: IDEA - Global Game Ruleset & "Additional Items" Seperate Expansion Pack?

Well I was thinking the NOs and also aren’t some of the setup instructions correct in the rulebook but not on the boxes?  What about the specifics of US/UK&ANZAC declaring war on Japan and territory movements before war is declared.

The rules may not be the same as the new ones for Germany/Russia/etc.

    • RE: IDEA - Global Game Ruleset & "Additional Items" Seperate Expansion Pack?

      @SgtBlitz:

Dude, don’t give WOTC any more ideas…  You’re already shelling out up to $200 for AA1940Pac and Eur, and you want to give them a chance for you to shell out MORE?  You’d basically be paying an extra $20 (if not more) for errata and a new rulebook, for christ’s sake.  I don’t think many people would even need to buy this global game expansion anyway, with both sets already.

Hell, this is like the thread started on the Darkfall forums about if NA players would have to buy a new copy of the game for the NA servers, which immediately got flamed down, then the devs saw it.  Before 2 weeks went by, major announcement came that it was necessary for people who already bought the game client would have to pony up for a NA copy of the game.  Don’t give them any more ammo with the A+A franchise.

Yep I knew I was going to get chewed out…

Look, it doesn’t matter if you’re buying additional pieces from FMG, Litko, ebay, the mafia, the dollar store, or WOTC.  They’re all going to cost you $$$.  This was just a suggestion of a way that WOTC could provide those pieces.  If they don’t then fine, other companies will provide pieces and lots of us will buy them to enhance our sets.  On the other hand, if WOTC did provide such a set, then it would just be another option for us consumers…  not a requirement.

I mean honestly do you really want to go bouncing back between the Pacific and Europe rulebooks to piece together the global ruleset?  Or would you rather have a nice neat concise copy of the global rules as they specifically apply?

Yup you could homebrew your battleboard and your deployment cards.  In fact I just did for A&A PAC40 using the thread on this forum, and they turned out awesome.  The tradeoff was of course time and some $$$ for materials.

Again it’s all about convenience.  The convenience of them being provided by the game maker has to be worth something -just a question of what-. and that’s why I came up with a suggested price and why I made this suggestion.

    • RE: My Piece Compartments Solution

We he said they got the rules and Map files from Larry.  That doesn’t mean that when WOTC drew them up/typed them up for printing in the factory that they copied them over correctly.  And you never know, maybe they were using 1980s word processing software with no spell check to save $$$ on corporate Microsoft Office licenses.

Ok am I missing out on some stuff regarding FMG?

All I see on their webpage “custom” for A&A are the dice with the insignias.

Is there other stuff in the works or that they currently offer that you know about and I’m missing?

    • RE: My Piece Compartments Solution

No these containers will not all fit inside the original  box.  They are each about the side of a generic hard cover book.

I agree it would be awesome if they all fit inside the box - like the old Styrofoam containers .  However, I now have the luxury of having a 94"x44" permanent war gaming table and I intend on leaving most of the game components out on that table, thus these boxes will work perfectly because I’ll have virtually no need to ever put the game or compents back in the original box.

    • IDEA - Global Game Ruleset & "Additional Items" Seperate Expansion Pack?

So lots of people have common complaints about not having enough tac bombers, the cardboard chits for ICs/AA Guns,NBs/Airfields, crappy battle strip, and lack of IPCs, etc. etc.

So what if - instead of just getting the global ruleset included with A&A 1940 Europe rulebook….

      A&A 1940 Global Expansion Kit! - ~$19.99
      Includes:

      Global Rulebook
Redone Setup Cards for all nations (like the old school box covers from Original A&A)
      20 Plastic Major ICs
      20 Plastic Minor ICs
      20 Plastic AA Guns
      30 Plastic Naval Bases
      30 Plastic Airfields
All Nations +6 Tac Bombers, + 6 Mech Inf. figures.
      IPCs
      Redone Battle board
Redone Production Chart up to ~100 with Technologies included on the chart.

Just a thought, and maybe I should be shot for even posting it where somebody at WOTC can see it…  I think they make a killing on the game as it is…
But WOULD it be worth it?  To have all those quality “issues” taken care of?
