Not quite the same as Axis & Allies but there is “1812; Invasion of Canada”, which is a semi card driven war game. It uses wooden blocks but you could substitute these with “Viktory” game pieces or other miniatures. The game is worth checking out on its own merits, with or without miniatures.

good points you raised Epiphany , what comes to my mind thinking about it is,  “Unternehmen Greif” 1944 BOTB.
The plan was causing confusion in the rear of the Allied lines and to force the Enemy to give out wrong Orders. And that was almost exactly what happend. It was getting that far that American Soldiers distrusted their own men and in some cases even killed own people in the confusions.

Imaging small bombing raids combiend with dropped off Japanese soldiers causing confusions like that on several points in the U.S.
      Like you said:
      @Epiphany:

From a mere terror standpoint, the I-400 might have worked to make American’s a little more frightened and on edge.  Japanese citizens certainly weren’t thrilled when Doolittle hit Tokyo.  It isn’t always the amount of physical damage you cause; psychology can play a vital factor in war too.  America felt invincible having not really tasted the war.  Our reaction to being hit at Pearl would not have been the same to the Japanese knocking down the Empire State Building or the hitting the White House.  Imagine those happening immediately after the Doolittle Raid.

I agree with Kurt that if the Japanese had specifically targeted things they knew they could destroy or that would seriously disrupt the war effort; such as bombing ball bearing factories or factories that produce batteries.  If you can hit the right targets, suddenly you have real disruption.  The I-400 could have afforded Japan some small measure of viable capability.  Small in the sense that it wouldn’t win the war, but I think it would have definitely been worth the investment for the capability alone.

A war brought to the doorsteps of America would be a Horroable thing…Pearl Harbor was still a little bit to far away…

Oooh. You have piqued my interest.

It seems like 1940 global is definately worth trying. I will try to keep my post frequency up but work is getting a little busy and we are moving as well.

Though as soon as I slice the head off of this Russian bear we go at it trench-style again! Deal?

As for 1940 Axis or allies?

      Commander JayVonC

      1. Which Turn do you prefer attack?

Depends on the situation, but usually J2 or J3. A J2 usually to counter and check the growing British Far East and ANZAC incomes, defenses, hopes and dreams. A J3 if only to deal with Malaya, or if better deal with the mainland.

      2. How many transports do you try to keep in circulation?

At least six, seven if I’m lucky. Keeping the Tokyo Express takes a lot of effort.

      3. What are the top 3 locations you place Industrial Complexes or Bases, and WHY?

Shangtung. Pours units onto the mainland to deal with a rowdy Nationalist China, and counter the Russians in Amur. Mechanized infantry is essential to counter both enemies, but they take time to actually accumulate in any substantial number.

French Indo-China. Again, directly pouring units, this time into Yunnan, and you can even see some mechanized divisions rolling into Burma, trading with the Calcutta, if need be. If the mainland is secured by the dice gods and air power, than units to defend the DEI or launch into Australia.

Hainan. To use as a naval base. Makes the Tokyo shuffle a lot easier, and takes a dedicated amphibious assault to take. Can also reach further into the Pacific

      Or

Korea. Build a minor IC, help contribute to the defense against the Russians/Americans.

      4. What are the 5 most important territories to capture/control (besides capitals) and why?

Yunnan. It should be a maxim “Never let the Chinese gain artillery.” Trade it back and forth, use a staging area against India.

French Indo-China. All round strategic area on the mainland.

Malaya. Prevents UK and ANZAC National Objectives.

Philippines. Prevents a staging area for the U.S, also part of the 6, 33, 35 triangle.

Korea. “The dagger pointed at Japan”. Capture by the Russians or Americans means a drastic setback.

      5. What are the best Sea Zones to stage your navy out of and why?

Sea zone 33, threatens DEI, Australia, Eastern Pacific.

Sea zone 6, home waters, staging area for Hawaii.

Sea zone 16, prevents Americans from sea zone 26, from rushing into sea zone 6. Place a destroyer there, use it as a trip alarm. Arguably this can be moot, based on northern approach, but this is more telegraphed than the former.

Sea zone 36, DEI operations and India.

That book could include the rules for every edition printed, and a special 25 page atlas for Global 1940.

Don’t forget simple side tips for every board game

yep that would be cool, and History of the pieces (WITH PICS) color sculpts and other stuff.

I’m sure there would be room for a profile of this site and its founder

      Of course!

      ?

      Genocide:
-10 for killing the last remaining unit of any power, including POWs.

Conspiracy with the enemy (e.g. Germany and USSR standing by their nonaggression pact despite a phony declaration of war):
Germany gets -3 for every turn after round 4 that Germany has not attacked any Soviet controlled territory or naval unit and has not placed any warships in z125.
USSR gets -3 for every turn after round 4 that USSR has not attacked any German controlled territory or naval unit and has not placed any warships in any German convoy raid zones.

      Plunder:
Anytime you capture an enemy’s capitol and seize their national treasure (gold, money, works of art, secret files, execution of intellectuals, etc.) you incur -5 war crimes points.

      ?

So if a power on one side, let’s say AMERICA, has committed a ton of war crimes and their morality score gets down to say 50(?), then all the neutrals become pro-axis.  Very realistic.

Now what if you could buy off a neutral with “foreign aid” and prevent them from going pro-other side?  Suppose the “Hearts & Minds” thing were changed so that you get a +1 morality point AND prevent a neutral from going pro-other side by coughing up the number of IPCs their territory is worth.  For example, if Germany is <50 morality points and all the neutrals are going pro-allies, then they can pay Spain $2 to stay strict neutral for another turn.  You do this every turn at Purchase Units.  Once a strict neutral goes pro-other side they can never go back to strict neutral.

So having a bad reputation means the other side gets lots of potential income from the neutrals (and their units) and you have to spend a bunch of money every turn on forein aid to Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, etc to appease them. The good news is everytime you buy them off you get to brag up your generosity in propaganda that earns you +1 morality point.  Now that’s realistic.

They can repair damage to exiting facilities; -1 damage per turn. But choose the discount or the repair per POW, not Both.

      Liberation:
If the territory a POW is in is captured, you may place an infantry per POW in your Place New Units Area.

      @LHoffman:

Sometimes it can be hard watching the parody videos because, while I don’t speak it fluently by any means, I know a good bit of German and it is distracting to read subtitles for language that very obviously means something else. I have to make a concerted and constant effort to tune out my mind translating.

I have the same problem.  To me, the Hitler rant videos that work best, and that allow me to disregard most easily the actual meaning of the German dialogue, are the ones in which the writers of the fake subtitles pay close attention to Bruno Ganz’s performance of each line (his tone of voice, his gestures, his emphasis of particular words, his motivation) and come up with clever subtitles which genuinely give the impression that this is what he’s actually saying and which form a coherent, plausible narrative.  Ganz goes through quite a range of emotions in that clip, and a good parody dialogue will likewise shift in tone as the clip progresses to reflect this accurately.  I think the “Hitler rants about the new Axis and Allies game” video is particularly good in this regard, with my favourite part probably being the line about the errata page.

Well, I really don’t like the wording of it in the rule-book, it’s not as unambiguous as I like, but again, computer programmers are an anal bunch.  I am surprised the voting was as one sided as it was but I can see it either way, that’s the problem for me.  The rules should not have to be submitted to an linguistics expert, it would be great to see an explicit mention of a partial sub fleet submergence while the rest carry on first shot attacking or defending.  I will sleep at night just fine until that ever occurs however!

i actually usually point out misstakes in my opponents moves. That way I can be certain that I win because of better strategy, not better tactics.

very difficult to suprise someone if you tell them that they are exposing themselves to certain moves.
