      S

We just ran into this last night.

      pg 21
Any damage previously inflicted on a facility remains in
place until it is repaired (any damage markers beyond 6
on former major industrial complexes are removed).

In addition from the unit profiles pg 27
A damaged minor complex may not be upgraded, so any damage on the industrial complex must be repaired at the same time that the upgrade is purchased.

Anniversary for me. Only played the original Europe and Pacific once each as my buddy has them and after we played them the two 1940’s came out. I liked the 12 IPC thing. In Pacific I liked the round one defenders suck rule. Just got Guadalcanal and D-Day but only played Guadalcanal once and not D-Day. Global is great but too long. Havent played the 40 games separate since Europe 40 came out and dont think i will. Bulge is OK but I need to play it more to say whether I like it or not.

Anniversary is great for all the reasons Garg said.

In the Pacific rulebook it states: “At the beginning of the game, Japan and China are at war. However, none of the other Allied powers…” thus implying that China is an Allied power, and Allied powers are unable to declare war on each other.

Who ever is the defender when the pact is broken gets +1 defense to all their units on the first round of combat, in combats launched by that opposing power.

So that encourages players to keep some units on the border….because they will defend as if they were tanks on the first round.
Or an AAA would defend at ‘2’ on the first round.

Think trench warfare…both those powers were expecting an attack on that front (defensive posture) but didn’t have the initiative, or reason, to launch an attack.

      @Gargantua:

They “construed” attacks on terrible tournament design, as personal since they designed it.

That’s not my problem.  Read my words again carefully.  And the first stone was cast when it was suggested, AA players weren’t competent enough to caluclate NO’s at the end of their turn, or that they can’t be trusted to use tech or play the 41 setup.

As the natural champion of “the people” around here… I jumped to your defence. You’re welcome GHR2. :)

How did you interperet any of that as an attack on the people?  Are you seriously assuming that all brand new players know all the NO’s for every country and knows how every single tech works and how to roll with them?  Because a significant amount of people who go to gaming conventions are people who walk around and try out new games.  So it is logical that for some tournament hosters might want to make things as simple as possible so that new players are less than intimidated and that the game runs faster.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Trip_to_the_Moon

A Trip to the Moon is one of my favourite films, Circa 1902.

I was reading about it today, and caught this…

Méliès had intended to release the film in the United States to profit from it. Thomas Edison’s film technicians, however, secretly made copies of it and distributed it throughout the country. While the film was still hugely successful, Méliès eventually went bankrupt.[1] This was due in part to the eventual view which was held towards his films that the special effects were overshadowing the plot.[8]

In an interview of Martin Scorsese by Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, Scorsese said, “He [Georges Méliès] lost basically most of his financing when the bigger companies came in. What happened here. . . at that time there was a lot going on with copyright and not copyright and that sort of thing.” Stewart said, “There is a story that Edison had taken one of his [Georges Méliès] films, brought it to America and showed it and it became enormously popular in America. But Edison decided not to pay I guess what we would call royalties.” Scorsese replied: “That’s right. So what happened, the film was I think the famous one, ‘A Trip to the Moon.’ They [Thomas Edison and his associates] were just taking the films and making dupes of them. So that was one of the reasons why he [Georges Méliès] was finished financially, ultimately.”[9]

Who knew, it was Thomas Edison who was the first movie pirate! lol.

      Napster, pfftp.

      @Gargantua:

On December 12, 1937, Japanese planes bombed the U.S. gunboat Panay, cruising China’s Yangtse River. Three Americans were killed, and 43 were injured.

      W H A T ? ! ? ! ? !

      Comments please…

This gets its own thread, really? I bet if we started a thread about what began on the day after the Panay was bombed, Dec. 13 1937, the thread would get closed down.

This was all the pre-text America needed to start taking economic action against Japan, and if this didn’t what took place the following six weeks after sure as hell did. Alas it was not to be about would take America another 4 years to pull its head out of the sand and do the right thing……

I’m no fan of Europeans’ treatment of natives.

      Are you kidding me?

We pay the bills, for their education, drug use, double-average crime rate, cultural preservation, land development, and health care costs.  We are basically enslaved to them.

If the European treatment was as bad as the Natives make it sound to be, then there wouldn’t BE natives talking about.

Imagine if the tables were reversed, and the Natives found Europe in 1492, we certainly wouldn’t be featured in their culture works, or benefit from their working class FOR THE REST OF TIME.

I think the idea of smaller forces being effective against an attack is probably most valid when thinking about the USA navy in both the Atlantic and pacific. Having say three small navies in a “V” formation gives then the advantage of options should one be attacked, while having one large navy would be a stalemate for the most part in the Pacific and usually a loss there. In the atlantic it gives the Axis something to worry about, where a UK fleet parked in one zone can be dealt with quickly and decicivly an multi-zone fleet makes you wonder what he’s up to. Just look at all the resources needed by Germany R1 vs UK, and this is a relatively small fleet compared to what USA can produce.

      Good points Gargantua.

      ?

Good implications for Battle of Britain etc.  At $10 it would basically take hits from 3 tactical or 2 strategic bombers to destroy a base (after AA).  The best part is it could kill some very gamey phoney baloney moves involving gratuitous bases.  For example:

      J1 Japan takes Chahar
J2 Japan builds airbase in Chahar and lands bombers there
UK2 UK pacific bombs Chahar airbase
USSR3 Russia bombs it a second time, destroying it
J3 no Japanese SBR of Moscow
