      I think he’s referring to mine.  Is it considered political to call Hitler and the 9/11 attacks dastardly and heinous???

      @gamerman01:

      In classic my favorite was the USA, UK and Russia, and in Revised, my favorite was Russia.  In AA50 it would have to be the UK, China, and Japan.  What do YOU think?

      I chose these countries for various reasons.  I like Japan in this game because they’re set up to dominate with no enemy production facilities anywhere nearby.  Also, I love carriers and fighters and they start with plenty.
      But I also like China, of course for very different reasons.  I love the chance to place units in many different places.  I like not having to worry about what to buy!  And it’s fun to be the underdog, with the chance to make your country impervious to enemy attack eventually!
      I can’t believe Russia didn’t crack my top 3, but it didn’t.  I like the UK for their worldwide presence.  But the biggest thing I like about the UK is focusing on Germany and making her life miserable.  It’s great to focus on an enemy who’s focused on someone else!!  It’s also great to be able to hit them anywhere from Karelia to Norway to Poland to Germany, France, Italy, jeez - there’s just so many targets close by!

      @Frontovik:

      picked US, russia and italy

      the problem is with axis that i find them boring
      germany with its 10 production can like only build 10 tanks each round, japan has no resistance due to its strenght.

      gimme chains, inf stacks and africa domination! :)

      That’s interesting.  I’m glad I made this poll.  Let’s see what other responses come in…

      @zooooma:

      @Battlingmaxo:

      In the games I’ve been involved in resignations come before achieving VC requirements.

      Victory cities are irrelevant in AA50.  If your opponent has thirteen cites it’s game over.  You lose.  Period.  Whether you acknowledge this as a victory condition or not there is simply no coming back from such extensive decimation.

      And the instructions call 13 “projection” and 15 “surrender with honor”.  LOL I think these are a bit off, to say the least!  15 should be “you are going to be destroyed very soon, and you must like playing A&A a lot to play this long” and 13 is more like “surrender with honor”.
      Well, at least the VC’s are in place, so we can use them to our liking.  It’s just that the numbers picked in the instructions are kind of laughable, as the above posters have basically said.

      By the way, I don’t want help here at AA Anonymous.
      Not yet.  Maybe after my wife gets really ticked off because she wants to spend some time with me, I might have to come back for her.  But I’ll never really change.  I was born this way, and I’ve learned it’s useless to resist.
      I own - my original classic A&A game that I made a special 90 mile 1-way trip to get when I was about 17.
      Anniversary edition.
      I will probably buy the new ones - Pacific and Europe.  I was about to say it depends on what they cost, but it really doesn’t  :-P

    • RE: AAA (Axis and Allies Anonymous)

      Hi, I’m gamer, and I chose an appropriate name for myself.
      I’m just a hopeless game addict, and I was born that way.  I remember begging my Mom for quarters to play video games, and I was always looking for arcades and trying to get to my friends’ houses where they had video games.  If I do not have an opponent, I enjoy playing both sides of a game.  Many games are actually well suited for this, including, yes, A&A.
      I just love coming up with strategies, so yes, I am pretty into A&A lately.  It’s funny, I didn’t really play it for years and years (I own “classic”) but my old A&A archnemesis from 1993 got me back into it last Thanksgiving.  All he did was ask me what I thought about the game between he and his brother, who were playing Revised.  I didn’t even know Revised existed at the time.  I told them I couldn’t really tell, what with the different map and everything (I had nothing to look at - we were at a family get-together)
      You know what happened next, right?  My ambitious nephew wanted to play a game against me for old time sake and he managed to find AAR at GTO.  I played that for awhile, but jeez you can’t even go to the bathroom or eat away from hte computer for like 5-6 hours because of the timers.
      Then I think I stumbled on these boards, and discovered the AA50 game.  I ordered it immediately, and boy am I glad I did.  I’ve had a couple face-to-face games, but mostly had to play, you guessed it, yours truly.
      I haven’t had to play against myself since I discovered the play by forum was actually a very viable option!  The AA50 map is beautiful!  The only thing that would be better is if Germany was black like in the board game.

    • RE: A non- political 9-11 question

      I was at work that morning on the University of Iowa campus (I was auditing the University) and my boss told me the news.  She said plane crash into World Trade Center.  I was not aware at the time that they were these 2 huge towers in NYC.  I asked how many people might be in them, and she thought maybe 50,000.  So yeah, I just couldn’t comprehend that kind of a disaster.  It was quite awhile til I heard it was “only” a few thousand dead.
      This was an unspeakably heinous and cowardly act.  Even Hitler himself did not organize suicide bombers to deliberately kill thousands of civilians in a tower in his enemy’s city plus the innocent people in the airplanes.  I need to start thinking about something else - this heinous act on citizens of the world (WTC had a lot of foreign-born people) makes me extremely angry to this day and I’m sure it always will.
      <9/14/09> One clarification - Hitler’s orchestration of the Holocaust is still one of the most horrific atrocities of all of history.  I did not mean to minimize that one bit.

    • RE: Heavy Bombers…...AGAIN!!

      Well actually I’ve thought about the auto-hit option because I’ve seen people like Commander Jen talking about it.  But you’ve got to remember that with the OOB rule of 2 dice at 4 that there is still a 1/9 chance that a bomber doesn’t get a hit at all.  The auto-hit option makes it 0% chance of missing.
      You know what would be cool, is if each country had its own tech charts.  Some countries could have 2 slots for the same tech to double their chance of getting it, like 2 Heavies for USA and 2 rocket slots for Germany.  Whatever, we’re starting to cross over to house rules (auto-hit bombers, changing tech charts)
      Why don’t we just accept the game as is, including 2 dice heavies.  Each side has 3 countries, and any country can get heavies, plus there are 3 techs that offset the effects of SBR.

      Hmmmm - OK axis, thanks for the clarification.  I never did read up on the LHTR for Revised, so yes, I’m comparing to unlimited damage with OOB rules as you said.

      Good points, Bel.  At least heavies aren’t 3 dice like in the old days!  You think 2 dice is crazy, but it’s actually quite reasonable by comparison.

    • RE: Don't get how Germany can handle UK and Russia with the bombing…

      @Bel:

      Everything has an opportunity cost not jsut strategic bombing. Very hard to calculate.
      But in order to use the bomber as you suggest then some other unit is costing you.

      ie. while the bomber isnt being lost whatever you sent in with it si!

      And if I don’t take the bomber in to support, I lose more!
      Bel, I would love to play you by forum.  No one has ever mounted a strategic bombing campaign against me, and since you think it’s such a great strategy maybe I would get my first opportunity.

      I just laugh that you say people are failing at basic math, but you don’t understand the basic rules.  As in your example, in previous games damage was limited to IPC value of territory.  Um, PER BOMBER!!  Really the only point I was trying to make was that in earlier games you could bomb an enemy’s money to smithereens - even if he had 50 IPC’s.  THAT’s “taking someone out of the game” as you say.  By comparison, now the most damage you could do to Germany is 20 and anything above that is wasted.  Germany can pay 15 and build 5 units, for example.  Point is, Germany has choices, whereas before Germany didn’t have choices, they had 0 IPC’s.  Now they have 50 IPC’s (in this example) and plenty of options.

      We all know SBR per bomber is worth 3.5 less the average loss of 2 per bomber = 1.5.  But this does not take into account the lost damage when you inflict greater than maximum damage.  For example, you bomb Germany with 4 bombers, and roll 24 damage.  You only inflict 20, so 4 had no effect.  So your average calculation is not always as simple as 1+6 divided by 2, if you’re taking in enough bombers to potentially do more than max damage.

      I’d like to see you build that many bombers up without me taking all your territory.  I’d have to see an effective strat bombing campaign to believe it is really that effective, because a 1.5 (at best) average margin per bomber is not that attractive, frankly.

    • RE: Don't get how Germany can handle UK and Russia with the bombing…

      @Bel:

      Here is a plausable and common scenario.

      -Enough bombers go in to do 12 IPC damage to Italy.
      -Italy only has 9IPC to repair with. (2 mainland ones)
      -No units for Italy that turn and still 3 IPC left to repair
      -Next turn allies need to risk even less bombers to keep Italy out of the game!

      I was going to write this long explanatory response, but I would sound argumentative.  I’ll just say it this way, I would enjoy being your opponent if you use logic like this.
      How many bombers is “enough bombers to do 12 IPC damage to Italy”? Two?  Three?  Five?
      Who would spend 9 with Italy to repair if there was 12 damage?  A player would spend nothing and save another 9 so they have 18 the next turn.
