    • RE: Things you still can't quite shake off from Classic

      @dondoolee:

      -Think I am getting off easy because you “only” role 2 dice for heavy bombers

      -Am still filled with wonder by transporting an infantry unit AND ANYTHING ELSE I WANT!

      -Still think it is a bit rude and unsportsmanlike to attack Germany with Russia on R1.

      Hehe - what a great post.  Yes, I’ve played enough Revised (about 70 games on GTO) and Anniversary that I think all of the Classic stuff is actually expelled from my system.  However, the ones I quoted still resonate with me.  Although with Germany right on the doorstep, it doesn’t seem rude or unsportsmanlike to attack Germany on R1 (which was crippling in Classic, as you imply)  In Classic you had the Caucasus buffer zone.
      I’ve got some new ones to add.
      -  I still have urges to attack subs with planes for the free shots.

      -  Still cringe at attacking transports with planes because I might lose my planes and still not hit the transports (actually, I got used to the Anny rule very quickly)

      -  Still have the urge to attack Russia with Germany with all available personnel every turn, especially turn 1, to get that all important Karelia factory!

      @Funcioneta:

      It’s interesting how Japan received so much votes. Probably it’s due being overpowered and some people simply just want stomp opponents without thinking too much

      In Revised the most voted usually were Germany and USA (the richer ones). See a pattern? I never take Japan if I can avoid it in FTF, it’s just too easy to be fun (specially in 1941). I prefer UK or USA (with their Coyote friends of ACME China  :-P) and maybe Italy (that only in PBEM, I love their short turns)

      Uh huh - very good points.  Thanks for your post, and you too dandolee - +1 to both.
      Yes, it’s always nice to have your power all set up to trample your opponents from turn 1 as opposed to, say, the USA who needs several turns of planning and intelligent play, typically.  In short, people don’t want to have to THINK too much, don’t want to have an immediate threat, and want to stomp opponents!  (I’m assuming)

      @dondoolee:

      Japan would be my least favorite power to play (not including China) as it is sort of a “gimme power”, in that there just is no major threat or opponent in most cases; yes it can be delayed and harrased semi-effectivly, but not at the peril of putting signifiant game breaking damage to the Japanase empire. Essentially the worst that can happen to her is preventing a super power from become a super duper power.

      Thanks for your post.  I agree with your Japan assessment especially for 1941, but in a current game I’m playing by forum (against Omega and friends) Japan got completely dismantled in the first 3 turns, mostly by dice, but also from the full attention of US bombers and fleet.  I often give close to full attention to Japan with the US in the first few turns, and it causes major problems.  (Talking about 1942 start)
      Like you said, (especially for 1941) it’s a question of whether Japan is a super power or super duper power.  I won a game (by forum) recently where it was Japan vs. the world, and the world lost (1941 start).

      Um, thanks for your reply, but my post was right on topic.  I answered what I remember from the morning of 9/11.  Is it controversial to say Hitler and the terrorists were bad?  Wow.

      yes i was referring to you. Not Jermo.

      And why didn’t you answer my question?  I think I have a right to your answer since you criticized my post as somehow being “political”.

      I think he’s referring to mine.  Is it considered political to call Hitler and the 9/11 attacks dastardly and heinous???

      @gamerman01:

      In classic my favorite was the USA, UK and Russia, and in Revised, my favorite was Russia.  In AA50 it would have to be the UK, China, and Japan.  What do YOU think?

      I chose these countries for various reasons.  I like Japan in this game because they’re set up to dominate with no enemy production facilities anywhere nearby.  Also, I love carriers and fighters and they start with plenty.
      But I also like China, of course for very different reasons.  I love the chance to place units in many different places.  I like not having to worry about what to buy!  And it’s fun to be the underdog, with the chance to make your country impervious to enemy attack eventually!
      I can’t believe Russia didn’t crack my top 3, but it didn’t.  I like the UK for their worldwide presence.  But the biggest thing I like about the UK is focusing on Germany and making her life miserable.  It’s great to focus on an enemy who’s focused on someone else!!  It’s also great to be able to hit them anywhere from Karelia to Norway to Poland to Germany, France, Italy, jeez - there’s just so many targets close by!

      @Frontovik:

      picked US, russia and italy

      the problem is with axis that i find them boring
      germany with its 10 production can like only build 10 tanks each round, japan has no resistance due to its strenght.

      gimme chains, inf stacks and africa domination! :)

      That’s interesting.  I’m glad I made this poll.  Let’s see what other responses come in…

      @zooooma:

      @Battlingmaxo:

      In the games I’ve been involved in resignations come before achieving VC requirements.

      Victory cities are irrelevant in AA50.  If your opponent has thirteen cites it’s game over.  You lose.  Period.  Whether you acknowledge this as a victory condition or not there is simply no coming back from such extensive decimation.

      And the instructions call 13 “projection” and 15 “surrender with honor”.  LOL I think these are a bit off, to say the least!  15 should be “you are going to be destroyed very soon, and you must like playing A&A a lot to play this long” and 13 is more like “surrender with honor”.
      Well, at least the VC’s are in place, so we can use them to our liking.  It’s just that the numbers picked in the instructions are kind of laughable, as the above posters have basically said.

    • RE: AAA (Axis and Allies Anonymous)

      By the way, I don’t want help here at AA Anonymous.
      Not yet.  Maybe after my wife gets really ticked off because she wants to spend some time with me, I might have to come back for her.  But I’ll never really change.  I was born this way, and I’ve learned it’s useless to resist.
      I own - my original classic A&A game that I made a special 90 mile 1-way trip to get when I was about 17.
      Anniversary edition.
      I will probably buy the new ones - Pacific and Europe.  I was about to say it depends on what they cost, but it really doesn’t  :-P

    • RE: AAA (Axis and Allies Anonymous)

      Hi, I’m gamer, and I chose an appropriate name for myself.
      I’m just a hopeless game addict, and I was born that way.  I remember begging my Mom for quarters to play video games, and I was always looking for arcades and trying to get to my friends’ houses where they had video games.  If I do not have an opponent, I enjoy playing both sides of a game.  Many games are actually well suited for this, including, yes, A&A.
      I just love coming up with strategies, so yes, I am pretty into A&A lately.  It’s funny, I didn’t really play it for years and years (I own “classic”) but my old A&A archnemesis from 1993 got me back into it last Thanksgiving.  All he did was ask me what I thought about the game between he and his brother, who were playing Revised.  I didn’t even know Revised existed at the time.  I told them I couldn’t really tell, what with the different map and everything (I had nothing to look at - we were at a family get-together)
      You know what happened next, right?  My ambitious nephew wanted to play a game against me for old time sake and he managed to find AAR at GTO.  I played that for awhile, but jeez you can’t even go to the bathroom or eat away from hte computer for like 5-6 hours because of the timers.
      Then I think I stumbled on these boards, and discovered the AA50 game.  I ordered it immediately, and boy am I glad I did.  I’ve had a couple face-to-face games, but mostly had to play, you guessed it, yours truly.
      I haven’t had to play against myself since I discovered the play by forum was actually a very viable option!  The AA50 map is beautiful!  The only thing that would be better is if Germany was black like in the board game.

    • RE: A non- political 9-11 question

      I was at work that morning on the University of Iowa campus (I was auditing the University) and my boss told me the news.  She said plane crash into World Trade Center.  I was not aware at the time that they were these 2 huge towers in NYC.  I asked how many people might be in them, and she thought maybe 50,000.  So yeah, I just couldn’t comprehend that kind of a disaster.  It was quite awhile til I heard it was “only” a few thousand dead.
      This was an unspeakably heinous and cowardly act.  Even Hitler himself did not organize suicide bombers to deliberately kill thousands of civilians in a tower in his enemy’s city plus the innocent people in the airplanes.  I need to start thinking about something else - this heinous act on citizens of the world (WTC had a lot of foreign-born people) makes me extremely angry to this day and I’m sure it always will.
      <9/14/09> One clarification - Hitler’s orchestration of the Holocaust is still one of the most horrific atrocities of all of history.  I did not mean to minimize that one bit.
