@Daaras said in League General Discussion Thread:

@crockett36 It would be fun to actually put faces to all the forum names.

Easiest way is to watch @crockett36 youtube interviews. If the guys you play with in PTV haven’t done interviews, ask them or do one yourself, more is better

I also just miss actually rolling dice. I rarely actually bust out my boards anymore. I can’t wait for the kids to be old enough to battle lol

Ah, the swansong of the modern A&A player!
Good luck! My kids are grown now and are both capable. My son loves WWII so much he watches World at War documentaries with me (and is much, much wiser for it). Got him to play Zombies with me twice, even helped him win, and have Classic set up in the basement.

He pondered R1, got stressed out, and quit. Yes I told him not to worry about winning, yes I told him I’d hold back.

You do want someone you see all the time, obviously. 🤜🤛

    • RE: Out of the Box 2nd Edition League Discussion

@Arthur-Bomber-Harris is speaking succinctly, and speaking for most of us,

We want to preserve the base ruleset as much as we can and if a player wants some modification and the other doesn’t, then the default is the actual out of the box rules. This has been agreed upon as a higher priority, so that OOB players interested in league can jump right in, and current or departing league players can seamlessly play OOB outside the league.

Bidding definitely creates the opportunity for more chaos and cheese, and of course any bid is a modification of the game start, but it is not changing any mechanics or rules of play after game start. If a player doesn’t like 40+ bids, he should propose alternatives to his opponent, who will often be agreeable.

This is where you can say, hey, let’s reduce German NO’s from 5 to 3 and then the bidding can be lower. In my latest game, after bidding started I realized I wanted to know where his bid was going to be, so I revealed mine and asked if he’d reveal his. Then I knew I wasn’t going to face a starting placement I wouldn’t like. So you can get creative with your opponent, but when you don’t agree, out of box rules are your fallback.

The default league rules are not effectively a restriction or a hindrance, they are a safeguard that protects players from being expected to play something other than out of the box, when they just want to play out of the box.

Pretty much total freedom is given to two players who want to doctor up any crazy modifications of out of the box they want, and the game will still be counted in out of the box league play, which is very lenient. Conceivably even a small band of players could be playing in OOB league play with all their unconventional rules, but as soon as they want to play someone else in the league who doesn’t want those rules, the league rules protect the “normal” player.

That’s right, several of the core A&A rules from the 70’s, 80’s are unchanged and that is one of the big ones.

We top players are in danger of taking the game too seriously sometimes. It’s designed for fun!!

LOL you talk JUST like a top A&A player. Analytical through and through, frustrated by the decisions of fate that you can do nothing about (you said it best in your game thread - let it ride, we live and die by the dice), and starting to obsess about every point of ELO (lol I know you’ll counter that)

Be careful with % chances and expected TUV changes.

I gotta be honest, we just had by far the weakest month since G40 was in its first year. In November there were only 6 games finished across all versions, and only 1 in the first 6 days of December. Maybe everyone’s taking a break at the same time, and/or maybe the games are more competitive and longer.

But there’s still plenty of action, and the playoffs continue to have VERY strong players in all 3 versions.
Classic has been added as a tracked league version of the game, though it doesn’t seem to have really taken hold. I’m back into Classic some, and maybe when I’m finally done with a big double elimination tournament, I’ll continually have 1 going. Pretty fun to return to the roots after actually learning the correct rules, thanks to resident EXPERT @The_Good_Captain

      Don’t feed the animals!

@axis-dominion rips off 7 straight wins and restores the stratosphere ELO

Total number of games may be in a lull, but dare I say we have the best league A&A player with us now. That’s better than having 30 games a month finished league-wide but if we were missing the top 5 or 10 from the past.

The top players are still active! Indeed, we have 4 of the top 5 all time active in the past year, and each have 7+ games finished in 2025. That’s remarkable.

@MrRoboto has anticipated your thirst for Axis vs Allies knowledge. You should look through the “statistics” tab in the ELO spreadsheet

At least you could put your units where you wanted within the territories and zones!!

It was really cool, typing out your moves like you were playing chess from an 1800’s railroad telegraph office 🚂

Also, rolling dice on forum was more like playing in person than Triple A instantly spitting out the results. :aaa dice 3@1 5@2 6@3" sigh… 👦🏻

@arathorn Classic classic, the one I played with boldfresh as a teenager, and on my living room floor by myself. Thanks to @The_Good_Captain some of the rules I did wrong are now right and it’s a different game that way

    • My Dad's WWII scrapbook

About a year ago, I inherited my Dad’s WWII newspaper scrapbook. I didn’t know he actually had it, I just heard about it once in awhile.

“When I was in high school, I followed the war closely and saved newspaper clippings throughout the wars”

When I found out he actually had it, and that it had newspaper articles (especially maps and pictures!) I was quite happy and made sure I was the child to get it.

One such article is the one attached - dated August 5, 1945, one day before an atomic bomb was dropped on a Japanese city, when no newspaperman had any clue. You will see the diagram for part of the planned invasion of Japan.

Please forgive if I am repeating others
Playing my first game, starting this month

      A few suggestions/observations

Border between Amur/Korea is so small it could be missed

You know what? My others seem to be cleared up on a different computer (being able to see units and counts in the combat box)

Nov and Tsi has a really tiny border, but not as severe as Korea/Amur

    • RE: Global 2nd edition Q+A ( AAG40.2)

      You can’t do it.
Your ally can’t load a ground unit onto your transport at the same time one on the transport gets off (to a different territory)

I had a French unit on the USA transport in the English Channel, and wondered if I could unload him on Europe while the 2nd French infantry got onto the same USA transport. All during the French non-combat phase, of course.

      You can’t do that.

OK, this one should be easy.

I was trying to figure out where my German army went (I’m playing I1)
Germany territory starts with 1 infantry in UHD but is supposed to have 11. All else seems correct.

Guess we don’t need a bid after all! ;)

I’ll just edit it for my game.

Yes, subs can be ignored during combat movement and noncombat movement nor do they block loading or unloading of transports. (page 13, bottom paragraph)

The exception is amphibious assaults - by transport(s) only - over sub(s) that are in the destination sea zone (unescorted transports can go over subs in other seazones on the way) are not allowed. You just need one escorting warship (which could just be a sub) to overcome this, and you can still ignore the defending subs. (page 16 under transports)
