OK, now I have read MrRoboto’s post, and wow, is that eloquent!

I wholeheartedly agree with just about everything he said.

My favorite option is to use ELO at the end of the year for players who met the minimum games requirement and sign up (want in).

Since only 3 games (rightly) required for OOB and PTV, obviously you’re not going to have very accurate ratings in some instances. This has been true under the past system as well (uses averages, and clean slate each year), but now we have a lot more data.

A new player to OOB or PtV will rapidly get a fairly accurate rating (even in 3 games) playing against others who are known quantities. If starting everyone at 1500 at Jan 1, not as accurate.

I really like MrRoboto’s Oysteilo example. He only played 3 games and those 3 games really don’t give much information. He’s better than our beloved Dawg, but couldn’t beat AndrewAAGamer in one game.
This means he’s like most players. Somewhere between the top and bottom.
But with his lifetime rating of 1669 lowering slightly from these 3 games to 1659, we have a much clearer picture of the mad skillz Oysteilo brings to the table than the little sample of 3 2023 games.

One can technically sign up for the playoffs any time before Jan 1, but I usually put the call out in the last 2 weeks of December.

Great, I wondered if anyone in the world would actually watch the whole thing, even the participants!

I hope I didn’t get carried away too many times, getting caught up in the whole peanut gallery thing.
We are of course hoping for enjoyment and maybe a tiny bit of learning for all! As you can imagine it sure was fun to do.

I think in the future the reviews should almost? always involve at least 1 player from the game. Having both players, moderated by @crockett36 would be awesome

So I’m really happy that you, one of the 2 players, responded with thoughts/explanations on a few of the critiques. That makes it much better.

Farmboy qualifies for the championship game, BACK TO BACK only 4 months after actually playing in the previous one!! What??!!

It is actually possible to be playing the championship game for 2 different years at the exact same time!!!? Ever thought of that? Maybe it will even happen in our lifetimes.

I agree with the spirit of #1, especially. 14 cost bomber means very few of them on the board. The range of 6-7 is a big part of A&A, so if the price is high enough that very few are bought… hey… you just nerfed A&A.
What about 4 attack on bombers but nerf them with 0 defense??! Sometimes bugs me that a bomber can defend. Anybody got real life examples to enlighten me?

On that note. Ideas like reducing the devastating power of AA or significant reducing the number of bombers on the board to less than any previous version of A&A is kind of … nerfing… kinda feels like… a step towards low luck…?? You want predictability of battle results, go play chess. 😉

Championship round, PTV, 2023, FIGHT!

There are more story lines than I realize, of course.
Old animosities, nasty dicings in the past that need to be avenged, who knows what.
But the following is what your master of ceremonies DOES know!

Balanced Mod matchups, we have
TWO TIME DEFENDING CHAMPION Farmboy coming in as the 3rd seed, in round 1 facing GeneralDisarray, who is also a very dangerous A&A veteran.
If you’ve been following my long-winded posts, you know this is very exciting because an unstoppable force is colliding with an immoveable object.
General D is making a bid for a TRIPLE CROWN as he is in all 3 playoffs, which is unprecedented, and Farmboy is going for a THREEPEAT, also unpredented.
They can’t both have their way! Hopes and dreams will be dashed in the first round! The ironic thing is, neither one of them may get past the second round?! Or, we will all be witnesses to history.

I think some of you may appreciate if we

Create a separate stickied thread for each of the 3 playoffs

Then you can talk about your playoff without gumming up the league discussion thread or cross-talk. I’m wondering if there would be some level of discussion by version, then.

Or perhaps it would be good if there was just a permanent sticked thread for each of the 3 versions for players to talk that version, for not only the playoffs but whatever else.

Any positive feedback to that one? We do have a lot of stickied threads and if some of you like to see the most recent games on the first page of the league, you wouldn’t be able to see as many…

Allowing bid units to blank territories or zones is a whole new frontier we don’t want to broach.

New Guinea is an exception that many players like, and allow, but if you have one exception, people will want more.
New Guinea has to be agreed by both players and should be done before bidding, otherwise you would probably need to bid over, yes.

I would suggest that players who want the New Guinea bid in play should be the ones stating that before bidding starts, because they are wanting something beyond default league rules.

In the event that you bid against such player and then find out he’s placing an infantry in New Guinea, you would then have to re-bid if you don’t accept it, and you can point out to him that it is not standard.

If you are in a playoff game and hypothetically the New Guinea player will not budge, he would forfeit the game because he refuses to play by league rules. Of course sporting and reasonable adults would work it out with zero animosity, but the answer is ultimately you have to play by the rules, this is how we prevent tug-of-wars

In regular season play, you would simply not start the game.
