    • RE: Was it worth adding ART to the game?

      @Cmdr:

      Speaking of Which, Ender, you ever come up with that portable, stripped down version of your calculator?

      I need a dice roller for my laptop with the busted wireless card to play a game on Monday.

      Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten.

      Anyone who thinks the rules need to be any more complicated should try programming a combat simulator first…

      Back on topic: in my current game, I have just built 7 Art over the last 2 rounds with the UK, because I could’nt afford armor to fill my production quota.

      Whoa, what’s this, is there a plan for a “revised revised” version?

      @Gamer:

      @Ender:

      Here’s an idea: ART could act exactly like battleships - they would do an opening fire salvo before your Inf rush in, but then stay behind in the country they attacked from.

      After all, that’s how they operate in real life - your artillery stay back from the front lines, you don’t have guys dragging them through the mud toward the enemy line. I guess it depends whether you see an attack on a country as a single battle or as a whole “campaign” - if a campaign, then it makes sense that the Art go along for the ride.

      Not dragging artillery through the mud?   Actually, that’s EXACTLY what they did with them, Ender.  You are talking about artillery like it’s a ballistic missile.  Artillery is useless in battle if it’s not damn close (if not at) the front lines.  The 88’s, as opposed to his tanks, were Rommell’s primary weapon against the British during his Desert Campaign, and you can bet your @ss they did not remain stationary through that campaign.  Certainly, they were not shooting at tanks in El-Alamein from Tripoli . . .

      I know they had to be close. However, usually you want your artillery to stop shelling the enemy when your own troops are storming their positions. It all depends on how you understand A&A battles to metaphorically represent real battles.

      @Ender:

      I really should convert the bloody thing to Javascript, but I don’t have time now. But I can probably bundle a folder with PHP, a web server and then a batch file to start the server and load the page. Could even do it with the new WebRunner app. But that will make for like a 20MB download just to run a 50K PHP script!

      Yeah, but then I don’t have to worry about the lag accessing your site over the WWW! :-P

      Yeah, but then the # of hits on my website will decline, to the detriment of my ego :(

      Sorry to hear of the trouble. It’s working for me too.

      If people want, I could bundle a “local server” version that you could run on your home computer, which is speedier than the site. It would be on a limited distribution basis, with the understanding that it was not to be passed on to others without my say-so.

      @Imperious:

      yes agreed, but if somebody drags in George Bush in a thread about the costs of units in Axis and Allies…. somebody has to say something

      I don’t see that that follows. And especially in nuno’s case, I think it would be best if no one dignified his posts with responses.

      I added some units, but then it doesn’t do anything when I press Start, and then I tried again and it froze Firefox. Also why are there 2 start buttons? I pressed the 1st one.

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      Not sure if this thread is being looked at or not, but I’m interested in starting up another casual game (Revised).

      I’m very new to the game, still learning, etc. My first full game is currently still ongoing against Perry (here), but I figure the best way to learn is to keep playing and see how things go, so I’d like to get going on a second game.

      I’d definitely prefer the game be played in TripleA, if possible.  It makes administering the game so much easier.

      I’d be up for a game.

      @Cmdr:

      It is a far safer assumption to presume that once Japan has been completely kicked off the mainland and facing a major fleet investment that they will not be able to recover sufficiently and that this would almost force Germany to take some risks in an effort to distract the allies or to over throw Russia and thus relieve pressure from Japan.

      Never assume…

      It might CHANGE how Germany plays, but I don’t think you can assume that it will start making risky (ie. bad) moves. It could just as easily make Germany be more cautious, more exact, more focused.

      @Cmdr:

      Just because your opponent was or was not a putz doesn’t mean you’ll be able to duplicate the results.

      I have yet to see a game where results are duplicated. Because of that, trying to predict what will follow from any line of play is pretty futile, even meaningless.

      The only way I think I’d be prepared to follow these arguments is if people would actually play them out, using No Luck to simulate the outcome of the dice. You would have to plan the moves as if it was ADS though.

      In that way, you could prove at least what is one likely path that the game would follow, and you would avoid all these hindsight strategies (“yeah but if you did that I would have done this…”) . But this “Japan will lose these islands and Russia will have 40 Inf in Sinkiang and US will have 200 naval units (assuming they spend every dime on navy” just doesn’t cut it.

    • RE: Nit picky German Economizer

      @ncscswitch:

      After a full day of discussion…

      My point was specifically in response to Dan’s counter about the UK liberating Archangel, and the destruction of the UK Fleet in SZ FOUR, not SZ3.

      Roger that, and I think I responded - To kill the UK fleet in Z4 you need to commit a lot of air, of which the first two hits will be absorbed by sub + BB. A third hit will kill a TRN.

      Germany needs its air for other things I think, but I agree, the UK fleet is vulnerable in Z4 on G2, it might take some damage, but it would also take out some fighters.

      I’m starting to think that these discussions are pointless. This game can change so much in a single turn, and it’s usually impossible to foresee everything that will happen even two turns (not rounds) into the future. I can spend over an hour just analyzing what to do with a single move, and still be unsure as to what will happen next. You can’t predict either the dice or how your opponent will respond.

      So, knowing that, and then to read Jenn’s posts where she spells out exactly what will happen over the course of 3-4 game rounds with dead certainty, how this country will have these islands, this country will have 20+ infantry in all of its territories, it just seems a little silly. Maybe others are doing it too but after reading Jenn’s essays I have to go to the grocery store to restock my salt cellar…

      It’s just endless. I’m for testing things where the dice hit the cardboard. Its seems like all of these threads its just the same nonsense - no one is learning anything from anyone, and everyone is dead certain that they’re right.

    • RE: Nit picky German Economizer

      Just to be clear, even if the UK does not liberate Archangel, Russia can likely handle trading three territories (esp. if the German stack is in Karelia, far from Ukraine)

      And, even if they can’t handle all three, my other point was that Russia still gets to kill a tank, even if it has to forego killing an Inf in order to do that. No amount of stack in Karelia will prevent Russia from sending 2 Inf 1 Ftr to kill the German tank.

      But in terms of a UK fleet in Z4, if Germany attacks it all out with air, that means it has no air units to trade territories with. Two or three of its air units are likely in Africa where they can’t reach Z4 anyway.

      So assuming you forgo trading land territories (unlikely for Germany to do), you have maybe 4 air units attacking, which will score two hits, absorbed by the BB and the sub. The Allied fleet meanwhile is likely to kill a German Fighter, and another one in round 2 of the battle. So maybe you sink some ships but you also lose a couple air units. I’m not sure it’s worth it.\

      But at the end of a day, you’ve exposed a tank without fodder to hold a 2 IPC territory. Simple as that.

      You guys are lucky that you can’t take territory with fighters and bombers, because I doubt I could convince you that grabbing free territory with THOSE units would be a bad idea. (“But the Ftr defends at 4, so it would probably kill at least 4 attacking Inf before it died, and Russia would be WAY overextended…”)

      5 IPC tank to take 2 IPC territory.

      @ Jennifer - how did UK fleet end up in Z3? No one is talking about that, that has nothing to do with the Arc blitz. Give NPB his pipe back.
