    • RE: Does Germany ever build ICs?

So Germany’s game basically is this: keep the allies from landing by building coastal defences and throwing any navy you have in the way as a speedbump, and do your darndest to pound the snot out of the Russians. Do you usually evac Africa then?

Oh yeah, those Americans do like to come across the top of North Africa. So Germany would need to control Africa as well - which would divert as many units as you’d gain on the russian front. Still, maybe I’ll try it once, just to learn from the experience.

I guess it’s expensive and dangerous, but having an IC in Ukraine could be nice - 3 Inf reinforcements arriving instantly, instead of 2 or 3 rounds later… But if Russia gets it - very unpleasant. If you could hold it though it might make things a lot harder for the Russians.

What’s your e-mail - I just downloaded them yesterday. At least the AAR one.

    • Does Germany ever build ICs?

Just curious - sometimes it’s frustrating to have German units built so far from the main lines, an it takes a while to get them into combat. Ever build an IC in Western Europe, or further East somewhere?

All right, how about a two-player game with MapView / DAAK?

One further clarification on Trn rules - they can only unload into a single territory. So you cannot unload 1 unit to UK and 1 unit to Norway from the same transport.

Nothing, I’ve just met her, that’s all. Sheesh. Get your mind out of the gutter.

It’s just weird to suddenly realize you have a connection to someone else on this board.

Back on topic, Switch, I assume that AF means Air Force - good point. That way you can retreat your better units and just leave Inf exposed. But the guys I’ve played with don’t play that way - they try to hold everything they capture.

And mojo, when I say “played with,” I mean - you know…

Will this allow TripleA to be used with someone else who is using a board?

Yeah me too - I was looking for myself down on page 48 or something, nope, bunch of zeros, try page thirty, nope - eventually found myself on page 5 or 6 or something. There are a lot less really active people on here than I thought.

So 250 is a tank, hey? that gives me something to strive for.

    • RE: Can Germany win without a Baltic carrier?

I said naval presence, not naval power - I tried it last night against TripleA and even with the stupid AI I had a really tough time keeping boats in the water while also dealing with Russia. I realized that I was fighting the combined output of all three Allies at once, which in a real game would be impossible. My navy was wiped out by round 5, but then I had Moscow and was able to turn the tide in the Atlantic.

It also made Africa impossible because there was nothing left for that battle.

If both sides are retaking with 1 inf or whatever, I agree. But if each round he kills 1 inf and then I kill 1 Inf 1 Art 2 Tnk he’s still down 14 IPCs on each exchange (for example).

But maybe only a really dumb opponent (TripleA) would keep doing that. I need a real game. That might happen Saturday. Cystic Crypt and I have discovered that we live within a mile of each other (and that I’ve met his sister) so I’m pumped to gear up the old war machine. Whatever that means.

I just read about a Canadian court decision that says even without a non-competition clause in the employment contract, employees can be under a fiduciary duty not to compete with their former employer in terms of soliciting their former employer’s clients etc. - don’t know if that’s your issue and if it is you probably want a real lawyer, but might be something to look into.

Hope that’ll be me next year - just finished law school and am articling for $25k/year - that’s the Winnipeg market, but at least I like the office - Public Interest Law Centre. After this I hope to find a job with a substantial increase in pay. Shoot, any job would be a substantial increase!

The proof is on the Axis & Allies board - it’s flat, isn’t it?

Just because a map can be wrapped around a ball doesn’t mean that we should distort what our senses plainly tell us. When you look out over the prairies, what do you see? It’s FLAT! If it was round all the oceans would run off.

    • RE: The One Round Attack and Withdraw

I remember reading some stuff I think at Caspian Sub about Kill zones and Dead zones. Kill zone means anything the enemy leaves there you can kill without much loss. Dead zone means anything you leave there yourself you are likely to lose. So on these concepts, your strategy is to keep the enemy in your kill zone while keeping yourself out of his or hers (your dead zone)

My last few games against the TripleA AI (I know it’s weak but the only opponent that’s ready when I am) I’ve moved away from keeping a solid front (just 1 inf pickets to prevent blitzing) to keeping a huge stack in a position where it can strike at anything. It can be on the front, but doesn’t have to be, it can be one behind the line. Whatever the enemy takes as easy bait by killing my 1 inf, I take back by wiping out the entire occupying force. Of course, the AI has no strategy, so I don’t know how it would work against a human player.

[edit] I guess what I’m describing is really a defence to strafing

    • RE: Strategic bombing your way to a win

That’s also a good final point - just like in chess, even trades are to the advantage of the player with the material advantage. As both sides lose an equal amount, it represents a bigger loss for the player who has fewer IPCs to begin with. And it’s easy for the UK player, there’s nothing Germany can do to stop it except hope his AA gun works. I may be warming up to the idea of SBRs after all.

I think I agree that the best way for Germany to have a naval presence is to join the fleets, including the sub that’s out there by itself.

On second thought, subs don’t have to worry as much about air attack if they are accompanied by a CV, 2 fighters plus a DD. In that case the subs are certainly not sitting ducks.
