    • RE: Frozen pizza

      @Jermofoot:

      And it’s dumb to say a woman can only be liberated by having a career.

      That is not what I’m saying. My point is rather that being a stay at home mom who expects her husband to cook his own meals is not liberated. It is just picking and choosing the parts of equality she likes and passing off the rest. Even women with jobs seem to think the proper division of labor regarding meals is:

      They cook, they clean up.

      She cooks, man cleans up.

      Man cooks, man cleans up.

      That’s entitlement, not liberation.

      Now NAWALT. Now granted perhaps some of the child rearing duties (rides to practices and lessons for example) might interfere with cooking but that isn’t what I was referring to. My objection is not to women’s liberation but to feminine double standards.

      I’m a big fan of DiGiorno’s.

      I also agree that it is not liberated to be a stay at home Mom without a career or even a job who makes her husband share the housework or she’ll divorce him and never let him see his kids.

    • RE: Favorite Star Trek Captain

      @Gargantua:

      I watched Star Trek TMP recently.  It didn’t seem all that bad to me?

      Remember to put it in context with 1979…  and movies like Space Odessy.

      TMP is the most ‘hard’ sci-fi of all the Trek films. The most Trek of the franchise. TMP is a decent film. No one has the patience for films like that anymore. Just look at ST:INO II. Just another action movie.

    • RE: Thor vs Superman

      @rjpeters70:

      But it also gets to different philosophies, I think.  Marvel is about angsty, “real world” issues, and DC has always been (well, at least until 2012) about the legacy of heros from the Great Depression to today, and about Earth bound gods like Superman, Flash, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, etc.

      DC and Marvel are just different, depending on what you enjoy.

      Expanding on my ‘blame the Avengers movie.’ The Marvel verse is more ready made for the movies. The stuff that is more interesting on film is already a part of the Marvel characters and they are already more integrated with each other as part of their history.

      Speculatively, the success of the Marvel films is putting a lot of pressure on DC editorial from the really high level management to get the DC verse to a place so they can make a Justice League movie/DC movie verse that will rake in Avengers money. But the whole thing isn’t very organic in that regard and everything is just flailing about wildly trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

      Something’s gone really off the rails at DC editorial lately and they didn’t really have as tight a plan as they wanted us to think with The New 52. I blame the Avengers movie.

      Yes, Superman can lift Mjolinar. He is as worthy as Cap.

      Thanks. Very eloquent design. I’m trying to figure out an improved storage option for my comics collection and I really like the aesthetic of this.

      Pacific War, are the cables through the front of you shelves holding any weight? How are they attached to the shelves? How deep are the shelves into the ‘slots’ on the wall? How many inches of shelving are you left with? How thick are the shelves?

      You can only have success with those motivated to learn the game. While your instruction can increase or decrease their motivation, they need to be interested in the first place.

    • RE: Star Trek Phaser sold for 231.000 $

      @aequitas:

      The Star Trek Phaser wich James T. Kirk used in I think only one Episode was sold for stunning 231.000 U.S. Dollars by an Auction.

      For wich or what Movie Item would you spend your money on If money wouldn´t be an issue?

      It is from “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” The Gary Mitchell episode/second pilot of the show. It was the only episode it was used in.

      Last but not least… The Maltese Falcon.

      The stuff that dreams are made of. There is a company that makes replicas of this. I received one as a gift.

    • RE: What about Bulge, D-Day, Guadalcanal?

      There is a forum for each of those games. Rulebooks for all are available at the Avalon Hill site.  Previous version discussion from several years agao.

      D-Day is the weakest of the three.

      Guadalcanal is the most zen of all the games. You have to think and plan but not to hard. The movement structure makes the game feel very fast. It is the only one that uses a ‘purchase units’ type of reinforcement system. Bulge and D-Day have a pre-determined system.

      Bulge is the most traditional style wargame entry. It is the game that seems to be most trying to put you in the place of the actual commanders of the battle and answer the problems they faced. It is also the most radical departure in terms of mechanics.

      I find the reception overall the GCNL and BOTB got quite disappointing as it has led to nothing but variations of Revised for the last six years.

      @BJCard:

      @frimmel:

      @The:

      I’ve only played this game three times and all three were allied victories. The allies would just mass all their fighters on the objective territories forcing germany to loos half of thier forces in any given attack in those areas

      :? I don’t think you are playing correctly.  :|  Allied aircraft don’t participate in combats.

      They only fire at targets moving into or out of the territory, correct?

      Yep. “Any given attack” suggested combat phase use instead of hindering movement use which is why I asked.

      @gperson2:

      I haven’t played with the optional cards yet, do they change the balance at all?

      The Fortune cards can really skew things. There is one that limits Allies movement and Allies landing if the dice come up wrong. That is devastating to the Allies.

      I think it is out of print. This certainly suggests out of print to me: https://www.funagain.com/control/product?product_id=017562

      There might be a set on eBay.

      I do not know about downloading the cards but you want to make sure any singles you buy come with their unit cards. Most sellers include the unit card. Try someplace like Miniature Market, Troll and Toad, or Popular Collections.

    • RE: Start Me Out?

      The different boosters are simply from different sets. Each set will have ships with different abilities or perhaps a German ship with an ability that only appeared on a US ship prior. Most games like this have a bit of power creep so the most recent sets will have the “best” ships but bear in mind I’ve only played with the first set and can’t really speak to that.

      Usually this sort of game has a starter set which will be enough ships to learn the rules along with the rulebook, a map and any sorts of special counters and tokens the game requires and some dice. So…

      You NEED:

      A copy of the rules.

      A map/playing surface.

      The appropriate tokens and markers indicated in the rulebook.

      Two fleets.

      You can get these from any starter set (the later the set the better as it will have the more updated rules) or you can go straight to the secondary market and buy some ship models and download/print/make/improvise the rest.

      After that it becomes a question of how you want to play and how much you want to spend as to what you’ll “need.”
