    • RE: Nawlins/Katrina + 1 yr. : What did we learn for NEXT TIME?

The whole below sea level thing is why I never went and likely never will visit New Orleans. They have to pump out a light rain. the very definition of unfavorable terrain.

We talked about the levies in 1988 in some of my engineering classes. The levies never ever had a chance. Anyone who is saying “it wouldn’t take that much to rebuild them and make them better” is spinning it. My memory is a little foggy but we are talking six story building high and again as wide at the base or soemthing.

While I don’t wish to be unsympathetic in the face of catastrophe, please move to higher ground.

As for what we learned for “next time.”

What we all know, no plan survives contact with the enemy. Although it is reasonable to make a plan in the first place. And practice and drill. You get on a cruise ship you have lifeboat drills right? We had fire drills in school. You look it in the face and figure out what you have to do to beat it or at least not lose to it and you practice it.  And if you aren’t willing to undertake that then you hope you are as lucky “next time” as the first time.

    • RE: "Who-dey?!" from a sometimes Bengals fan…

I like “Cincinnati Chilli.” I can not put forth any argument that is the best compared to any other. Sorta like comparing Guinness to Bud. Same planet, different worlds. I hope mostly that the Bengals stay out of jail and beat up on the Steelers. I’m from Steelers country and it makes my season for the Bengals to whip on 'em. Just wish they’d have done it in the playoffs. At least the Steelers fans have stopped talking about how great the teams were in the 70’s (for now.)

Also Rothlisberger some kind of stinky cheese right?

    • RE: Media Whoring

My problem is the media spends a lot of time telling you how to feel and how others feel and very little time supplying you with facts.
They also try very hard to be the first one with the story (with or without accurate facts) instead of the first one with the correct and accurate facts.

      @Jennifer:

Which is why you hear of children blowing up in Iraq, but not US Soldiers building schools and hospitals for those same children.

Buildings don’t bleed. Also, reporting these actions might actually get support for the war by the people and thus the media won’t report it.

Begs the question of what the children attending these schools will be taught doesn’t it?

    • RE: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

Isn’t part of strategy and playing well minimizing the fracks? Good strategy will get you further with bad dice than bad strategy will get you with good dice. IMO.

      @NoMercy:

My 2 SS, 1 DD, 1 AC , 4 Fgts, 1 Bmb in round 2 vs the British fleet (jsut had 1 round to move and build)…
Her 3 transports did better then my attacking force…I even lost a fgt in round 1 of that battle…

What was the defending fleet by the way? BB, Sub, 3 TRNs? But considering all the dice rolled how far did the standard deviate? After all ones will be rolled. So will twos and threes et al. If the ones come up when rolling ARM or BB or BMR no one notices, but when they come up for TRNs it is noticed. Did you get a 4 and 3 when rolling the SSs but a 2 for the BMR? That is two hits or one hit but well within the math of what can be rolled. Â

      DiceRolling 12 6-sided dice:
      1, 3, 4, 2, 4, 5, 1, 6, 3, 4, 2, 3

Now split that up among some normal attacks that would include twelve units. One time go from BMRs down and one time go from unsupported INF up. I’m guessing the number of hits will change.

I personally have always had a bit of trouble with the dice, with being frustrated when they don’t come up “my way.” I have been working very hard on taking that in stride. Not only was it taking away from my fun it was taking fun from others. I don’t want to sound preachy but I really am preaching.

      The Gamer’s Serenity Prayer.
The only sure thing about luck is it will change.
May I be gracious when it goes bad.
May I be gracious and grateful when it turns good.
I will review my decision before I blame the dice.
I will review the dice before I credit my decisions.

I will step off my soap box with the definition of Luck I like the best, “Luck is what happens when preparedness meets oppurtunity.”

    • RE: AA Pacific is the best of the A&A games

I would disagree that Pacific is the “best” game. I would contend it is a bit of apples vs. organes, or Coke vs. Pepsi, Pizza Hut vs. Pappa Johns. I’m not a big fan of needing to label things “the best.” I know my preferences and the reasons for them.

I am with you in that I enjoy the time limit. I also enjoy the no tech but that is easily fixed by simply playing without it.

I like the convoy routes aspect. I think this brings the naval battles more up front. Naval battles capture IPCs in the Pacific game.

I would contend that while the time limit is cool it also can limit the strategic decisions you make. Not a lot of paths to Victory in Pacific.

I enjoy it as much as any of the other games though.

Have you used the Abattlemap program for Pacific? I have opened it up but I found it hard to read. I also haven’t compared it to the actual board to verify it is accurate.

:-) From the department of beating a dead horse  :-)

If you don’t like dice play chess. Or GO. Or Checkers. Or Pente. Or…    :-)

On a more constructive note, if you are winning even with crazy bad luck on your part your strategy must be reasonably sound.

If it helps look at all the dice rolls in a game and see if they are to averages. Don’t look at the sample as just your dice. Look at your opponents as well. Just because you rolled all fives in a particular battle doesn’t mean you are rolling more than your fair share of fives. It doesn’t mean you aren’t but if also doesn’t mean more than the normal number of fives are coming up.

I shrug my shoulders every time dice hit the table. Good or Bad.

Say it with me, “They are dice.”

    • RE: Kill America First?

Not building and concentrating on getting Japan forces to Moscow gives the UK and Russia too much time to at least contain Germany. Given enough time the Russians can defend Moscow or make its conquest very, very costly. If Japan is not pressuring Moscow and Germany is contained the US can just do its thing in the Atlantic and shuck troops to Africa and Europe via WUS, WCA, ECA.

The US needs to establish an Atlantic transport system. As long as Russia is not hard pressed the US can divert those TRNs to Africa or Europe. The only thing that can kill the US first is incompetence on the part of the person playing them.

    • RE: Lights

In my past life as a rock and roll sound man I turned the lights off and was often a paid parent to musicians at least for the day they were on my stage.

Guitar Techs those guys are parents, and the tour manager/stage manager guys. The guys that travel with the band. What I did was nothing compared to those guys.

I often use the phrase “Did you look for it____” where blank is where they always forget that they left it. I’m not a parent but I’m pretty sure I have several of the requisite skills.

      @Jennifer:

The only problem I have is that 1 infantryman in ADS can successfully hold off 400 attacking infantrymen given the right dice rolls.

And that can happen at your dinner table with real dice not just with a computer program. The odds are long but so are they of getting hit by ligtning or winning the lottery or getting a rare and terrible disease…but people do get hit by lightning and win the lottery and die from rare and terrible diseases.

Try this mantra, say it often while gaming, “They’re dice.” Say it when they are bad for you and when they are good for you. Say it when they are good and when they are bad for others.

      “They’re dice.” “They’re dice.” “They’re dice.”

_Think of the story of the scorpion on the fox’s back crossing the river. The scorpion stings the fox. “Why’d you do that? You’ve killed us both.”

“It’s my nature,” answers the scorpion._

      “They’re dice.” It’s their nature.

Not really turning off the lights but certainly picking up after people cause they can’t be bothered to remember where things go.

I used to have a job where I turned lights on and off on people as a Lighting Tech for a regional audio/lighting company.

    • RE: Average number of rounds to moderate victory?

I think it is an intimidation factor Switch. There might be some who think they have to try something bold or off the wall to hang in with you.

My tourney game went less than three, (lots of bad G decisions) and I’m in turn 7 in a forum game with it more or less locked depending on whether Japan can get over a pretty big wall in Moscow. Both sides are facing mutual annihilation in the battle. Germany is pretty much locked in Germany.

We usually lose track in our FTF games but the 10-15 sounds right.

    • RE: Cannon Fodder

Transports are acceptable losses in naval battles, that came up a couple of days ago on this board.

As far as strategy of moving TRNs unescorted or taking or not taking them with you in a big naval battle that is highly sitiuational. First off TRNs still have no attack value so moving them into combat without escort is suicide. The US and Japan early on might have the luxury of moving TRNs unescorted. In the US case particularly from Hawii to New Britain and back. Usually your warships are in New Britain.

As far as just bringing them for fodder you don’t really have that luxury. Managing your logistics is a big part of Pacific. The US doesn’t have time to make attacks without assaulting the islands. You don’t have time to build and re-build and move across the ocean the TRNs you need to get those Marines (who do cost four, Marine and an ART are a great deal in Pacific IMO more punch less cost a 3 and a 2 vs a 3 and 1 for ARM, INF or 2,2 for INF, ART.)

You can use TRNs as fodder but you really won’t want to.

    • RE: Russia, round 1!

I did some moving around. G can hit CAU with 4 INF, 1 ART, 2 ARM, 1 FTR and 1 BOM on round 1 if it passes on EGY. G still has lots left to get EE and UKR back (depending on the dice) assuming 2 INF from bid in Belo.

Now I didn’t run it with the 3 MOS INF reinforcing CAU only with (6 INF and 1 FTR) FTR going there instead of MOS and having 2 from KAZ and 4 from R1 build. It is only a 21% chance for Germany to lose all land units according to 1000 rolls on frood (if I’m reading it right.)So 6 INF, 1 FTR for Russia in CAU vs. 4 INF, 2 ARM, 1 ART, 1 FTR and 1 BOM. I did not figure in Shore Bombardment or AA but that isn’t bad chance at pretty much destroying the Russian war machine and collectinf 46 IPCs.

I didn’t figure the other battles but you could hit KAR with 6 INF and 1 ARM (vs 3 INF and 1 FTR), EE with 2 ARM, 3 INF  and UKR with 4 INF and 2 ARM. Now you would need to rethink that depending on the R1 dice. You also can still hit the UK BB while doing that.

The plan as orginally designed Jennifer is fraught with peril. I don’t see it getting much better. I have 11 INF and 1 ART in MOS in the above scenario. I suppose it would depend on how much Russia has left in EE and UKR.

You don’t need Africa if you are that close to MOS.
