Gettysburg! Can you even begin to imagine what history would have been like if we were two nations instead of one?

@wittmann:
Wow Fishmoto. A Marine! What branch can I ask? And how long did you serve?
I have never been a Pacific fan, I am afraid. My grandfather was  a desk Sergeant in the RAF, based at Duxford and other English bases and my Italian one was in Signals and served in Africa and Russia. Both were prewar volunteers.You asked what branch and I always tell everyone that the Marine Corps is the fighting branch of the Navy. The Navy exists to transport and support the Marines. Now that I have made that statement I am sure that I will stir up some interesting comments. I enlisted in june 1956. I was 18 years old. My permanent duty station was at camp Pendelton California. I was in weapons platoon in Lima company, 3rd battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine division. My job was a machine gunner. Model 1919 aircooled 30 caliber. Its kind of strange but I have never found a civilian job that matches. I did get an all expenses paid trip to Pearl Harbor then to the Philippines and from there to Japan in 1958. (not first class though) When my enlistment was up in 1958 I was given a shipping over talk which would have meant a four year commitment. I said no. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had said yes. I know that I would not have the family I have now if I had reenlisted. Hope this has answered your question.

The Solomons. Thats the area where my father served in WWII. (Seabees) And the 1st Marine Div. was involved in a big way. I was a member of that division in the fifties. Glad I was never on Guadalcanal or Tulagi.

@CWO:
Though I can only imagine it’s something in line with the difference between Men and Marines.
Sounds like a good USMC recruiting slogan.
Back during the First Gulf War, I saw a news item on television in which a reporter spoke (on separate occasions) to a guy from the US Marines and a guy from the US Army. When he asked the leatherneck why he was in the USMC rather than the Army, the guy answered (as I recall) "Well, I think the Army is kind of ordinary, and I think of myself as somebody who’s more than just ordinary." When he later asked the GI why he was in the Army rather than the Marines, the soldier answered, "I know some guys who are in the Marines and they’re all crazy."Â
It does not take long to get there either! Semper Fi.

ABWorsham, very sorry to hear about all of this. I do not know the names of your family members, but the Lord knows who they are. We will be praying for all your family that they might be comforted in this time of terrible loss.

@CWO:
Very nice. What’s the source of the plastic units?
The plastic units came from other games and civil war plastic kits. A lot came from The American Civil War game. Too many to list. In other words just pick them up where you can. I used all plastic units for my photos but for game purposes chips will be great. For test games I made hex shaped cups from cardstock that would hold a whole division. Made it a lot easier to move around.

New Gettysburg game I am developing using plastic sculpts. Battle and supply systems similar to AA Battle of the Bulge.

Of course he could, even if his brain was slow… he would have had THE REST OF TIME!
Probably TIME to let this discussion REST!

Well if he didn’t join the Nazis, what were you going to do, kill him?
How can anyone kill him if he never dies?

Paper Macche and Bamboo isn’t a real plane.
Zero is not a real plane. Its not even one. Its a Ronson! Some even think its a ball of fire.
Tell that to the Allied pilots shot down early war. Think they would have swapped their fighters for one!
I doubt very much if you could find a Navy F4F or an Army P-38 pilot who would trade their planes for a 0 after they discovered how easy the 0 would light up. Dont forget that the F4F held the line for the Navy until the F4U and the F6F were operational. The Navy would have been in a world of hurt without the old Wildcat. I think a good case can be made for declaring the Wildcat one of the most valuable U.S. fighters of the war.

Were gonna need more men! Quote by Billy Bob Thorton from The Alamo.
Then a little later when the Mexican army enters San Antonio, Billy Bob says " Were gonna need a LOT more men."

RE: Was the invasion of Okinawa even necessary?posted in World War II History
See also for further indication of this: Korea
The Soviet Union shared a land border with Korea, that’s how they were able to invade it, as well as most of the other Japanese territory they over-ran during WW2. The Soviets hand neither the logistical capacity nor the shipping to manage a large scale invasion of Japan that would have been necessary to secure themselves an occupation zone like they did in Germany. Even in the operations on Sakhalin island the Soviets had a land border to start from and their invasion of the Kuril islands was slap-dash at best, with most of their troops being brought to shore in mine trawlers and PT boats. The 20,000 strong Japanese garrison didn’t even put up a fight as the surrender was already in effect so its not like the Soviets were making a hostile land fall anyway. In the grand scheme of things these were very small operations and a full scale invasion of Japan, even Hokkaido, would require ten times the shipping and logistical support that the Soviet Union did not have.
Clyde is absolutly correct!

The more Japanese land that was under US control, the better….agreed that it was necessary in case the bombs failed, or if Japan was going to fight to the last man. The faster and the more able to take over the main island before Russia could muster its own invasion force would help prevent a divided Japan like that of Germany/Berlin…imagine how the last 60 years would have played out with a divided Japan?
How could the USSR have invaded Japan?

My understanding from Brain Damaged… is that he had some moderate disagreements with the site and left…
So he left on his own then. I used to try and agitate him calling him a mental case. It never seemed to bother him. He seemed to think it was a compliment.

RE: Pacific Turning Point: Midway or Guadalcanalposted in World War II History
Marines fighting over dirt, PALES in comparsion to fleets fighting over area’s of operation.  IMO anways, and certainly at the Axis and Allies level.:P
Case in point… a Midway that goes sideways for the Allies, could quite possible could mean, a Guadalcanal that never happens.
I agree with Gar on this one. Without the win at Midway the invasion of Guadalcanal would not have been attempted when it was.

RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion threadposted in Other Axis & Allies Variants
why does this tread get all this meanigless messages? (not unlike this one). im hoping to see some actual news, and the only thing i get is pointless remakes and hopes. im not trying to be a wiseass, but please keep this tread pure information please. thanks
I fully understand what you are saying! It is frustrating to get an e-mail notification that there has been a post here and then come here looking for news on the new pieces and then find meaningless posts. On the other hand I guess that all members have a right to post here. See, even I just did it! Sigh.
