      0 killer!

      I remember standing in our back yard as a youngster in the early 1940s and seeing P-38s fly over. Like the straight ahead firepower and the saftey of two Allison engines in the long distance missions of the Pacific.

      It is obvious that all Russian border units will be wiped out on the first turn. So during the Russian combat movement phase can they pull out or are they locked into combat once the axis has moved into their zone? I am thinking the Russians cannot pull out until the retreat phase of the second round of combat. (If there are any survivors) I asked this question here so that others can see the answer.

      @sturmmorser2000:

      i have A&a 1941,1940 se and europe.Would that be enough pieces to play?

      You could play a very basic game. You can use Italian units if you have them for all the axis minors. For the advanced game you will need supply tokens, trucks, transport aircraft, heavy tanks, SP artillery, tank destroyers, 12 sided dice and aircraft movement tokens. Also play money if you dont want to keep track of IPCs with paper and pencil.

      Do you have to have plexiglass for the map?Is the image on the vinyl durable?Interested in this game

      The map should be very durable. The plexiglass helps to hold any map from moving and flattens out any curling in paper or vinyl. It also gives you a hard flat surface so your units will stand up better. No more valleys like the folding maps have.

      View of German units facing off against the Russian border defense. Looks like a wipeout ready to happen. Launch date for Barbarossa is 01/03/13.

      Has anyone made a larger weather chart for this Barbarossa game? The one on the map is a bit small.

    • RE: Operation Pedestal

      The tanker “Ohio” was brought to Valletta harbor in Malta flanked by two British destroyers that had passed wire hawsers under the hull of the tanker to keep it afloat.
      It took an hour to make the last mile into the harbor with the aid of local tugs and the destroyers. The cargo of the “Ohio” was 13,000 tons of aviation fuel that kept Malta’s planes in the war. This is an amazing story.

      @Gargantua:

      Fish,

      Are those Coastal guns in that picture? In places like the Vladivostok and Phillipines?

      Actually no, they are bunkers that give a +2 bonus to infantry in that territory using a d-12 system.

      My Soviet pieces arrived today as well. Shipping was so fast they almost got here before I ordered them. Also just in time for round four of our current game of 39 global scheduled for next thursday.

    • RE: History's Most Decisive Battles

      @ABWorsham:

      Was Gettysburg that decisive compared to other battles? Had the South won that battle, it doesn’t change the outcome of Vicksburg, the defeats in Eastern Tennessee, Atlanta and the March to the Sea.

      All that does not matter. If Lee defeats the army of the Patomac then nothing stands between Lee and Washington but some garrison troops. Lincoln probably asks for an armistice.

    • RE: Favorite Pacific War Front

      @CWO:

      @Fishmoto37:

      You asked what branch and I always tell everyone that the Marine Corps is the fighting branch of the Navy. The Navy exists to transport and supply the Marines. Now that I have made that statement I am sure that I will stir up some interesting comments.

      I think that the folks in the Navy might feel this implies that, as non-Marines, they’re non-fighters – and I’m sure they would object vehemently to that notion.  Navy personnel can send an awful lot of firepower in the direction of the enemy (including nuclear torpedoes and nuclear ballistic missiles), and they themselves can be at the receiving end of some pretty lethal enemy ordnance.  I think all of that qualifies as combat, even though it doesn’t involve putting boots on muddy ground.

      Anyway, it’s interesting to hear about your background as a Marine.  Your comment that you had never found a civilian job that matches reminds me of a TV interview I saw in which a mortarman (I can’t recall if he was in the US Army or the US Marines) was discussing some defense cutbacks which would soon eliminate his position.  He said, “I’m a mortarman.  I fire explosive rounds downrange using a mortar.  There aren’t too many civilian jobs out there in which I could put those skills to use.”

       I should have used the word support instead of supply. Support would include supply as well as close air support and pre  invasion bombardment. Anyway I just made that comment to stir up the navy guys. We agitate the Navy whenever we can. I have a good friend who is a Navy vet that is my regular A&A opponent.

      @Most:

      Blood on a special edition map shows extreme dedication. I endorse this message.

      I always cover my maps with plexiglass for protection during really serious games.

    • RE: 1942: The Eastern Front

      @Subotai:

      True strategy games players never retreats, we’re advancing in another direction, and so should Hitler do when the attack on Moscow failed.
      It’s easier and much cheaper to defend than attack. Perhaps the oil fields could be taken as part of a strategic defensive regroup manuever, but there is little Germany can do in this situation to win, only making choices to reduce losses.
      No barbarossa before UK is captured, or UK is allied with Germany.
      This is just like a very bad chess move, and you see it when your opponent makes his move. Game lost, start over.

      That comment about advancing in another direction sounds familiar. Wait that was a different war. (police action) If I were the Germans I would take all the units off the board, set them up again and start over. Only thing to do. Sorry, I could not resist.
