    • RE: Tigerman's Barbarossa Game now at HBG

      @Variable:

      We have some new files up on BGG for this game. Reworked the rules a bit. Updated Basic Setup chart to reflect rules changes. Added the Advanced Setup Chart. All should now be version 2.1.

      Let us know how everything is!

      What does this mean? “removed 2 supply type system”. When I scanned the rules I did not find any changes in the supply rules.

      DKM Scharnhorst

       Yes, the U.S.S Enterprise is the ONE. Cant believe it was decommisioned and sold for scrap. More actions against the Japanese navy than any other U.S. ship.

      @Tall:

      Fishmoto37,

      ––Bingo! It took longer than I thought for someone to bring up the F-4U Corsair.

      ----I would consider the F-4U Corsair as my all-around favorite aircraft considering many variables.

      Looks–------A truly awesome looking streamlined a/c with gull wings.
      Power-------One of the most powerful engines.
      Speed-------One of the fastest a/c. Especially the later model.
      Ruggedness–Anyone having read about them knows this.
      Dogfighting–Just ask the Aces in Marine VMF-214 “Black Sheep” and US Navy “Jolly Rogers” squadrons.
      Versatility—Ended up being a carrier as well as a land-based fighter and fighter/bomber.
      Multi-Role—Fantastic as a pure fighter, and deadly as a fighter/bomber. It’s radial engine allowed it to be a ground attack a/c. They tried using the wonderful P-51 Mustangs in the ground attack mode in Korea until they lost so many of them due to damage to their liquid(glycol) cooling systems. And the Corsair’s powerful engine allowed it to tote a respectable load for bombing, including rockets.
      Production–If I remember correctly it was the only WWII fighter picked to continue in production after the war. The A-4D Skyraider doesn’t count here.
      ----The Japanese called it “Whistling Death” for the sound the air made ‘whistling’ through it’s radiators. Now that’s an Awesome Name!

      Can I get an AMEN!!!

      “Tall Paul”

      Also the F4U2 version carried radar in the starboard wing and was used as a night fighter.

      Bama. NDs signature win isn’t looking very impressive as the second half of the Rose Bowl gets under way.

      I was just looking at the Alabama schedule and find it less than impressive. Three tough games stand out. LSU, Texas A&M, and Georgia. And we all know how the A&M game turned out.

      I think the SEC gets a lot of fluffing from the media, particularly ESPiN. The SEC was nearly 1-2 against the B1G yesterday (and the Huskers gave UGA a fight) and that’s with two of the B1G’s best teams (one of them undefeated) sitting at home. I’m not that impressed with Bama but I’m less impressed with ND (the near debacle against Pitt leaping to mind, along with Stanford) and I really don’t get the love for Te’o from ND. His numbers didn’t justify a trip to the Heisman ceremony.

      And didnt Alabama have their “debacle against Texas A&M”? During the second overtime of the Pitt game ND had the ball first and would have scored 7 but their running back lost the ball about 6 inches from the goaline and went into the endzone without it. You can clearly see on the replay the ball in the air as he dove in. And then all Pitt had to do to win was kick a field goal. Wide right by about 18 inches. ND tried to give them the game but Pitt would not take it. So ND took it back. I never saw anything quite like that before.

      You will notice in this photo that the Luftwaffe is located in rear areas. The rear guard blockers that the Russians were using to trade space for time were easy to run over with just ground units. I wanted to capture some Russian airfields before I moved the planes up anyway. The weather during turn 3 happened to be snow so all the planes not on airfields were grounded anyway. This saved me a lot of supply tokens because every zone that is activated with planes in it costs 2 supply tokens in addition to the 1 token to activate the land units. This game is going to require a lot of thought to keep units supplied. Much more so than the BotB game.

      This is the situation at the end of turn four. The tank with the flag in the center represents a rather large German army group located off the map. When I did a second setup for this game I decided to streamline the minor axis units and I used Italian units for all. They will be mixed with the Germans after a few turns anyway. But we have to be careful with the minors in the battles because a lot of them have different attack and defense values than the Germans.

      This is the situation after the first complete turn. Just about all the Russian border units are wiped out. Four turn session 01/03/13. We are using an advanced setup with trucks and supply tokens. The Russian player has set up rear guard blockers for turn two.

      @ABWorsham:

      Remember the ND and Standford game? ND got an out of the world call, otherwise they lose the game.

       I do remember that game. And I know the play that you refer to. I am watching it as I post this. You can clearly see that the ND players had let up before Taylor even started to roll over towards the goal line. Which means the play was called dead prior to that. So the only question is did the officials call it dead too early. Remember that was in overtime and ND was leading by seven at the time. So even if Stanford scores it just means another overtime unless Stanford tried to go for two.

      @Tall:

      Hey Guys,

      There are so many VARIABLES,…So many ANSWERS. May I ask what qualities we are basing our opinions on?

      Beauty
      Operational capabilities
      Rugedness
      Dependability
      Most/Least produced
      Most advanced technology
      By country
      By Theater
      By Campaign
      By Type
      Best “fit” for the situation

      I’m NOT trying to be a “fun-killer” here,…but there isn’t just ONE, because the answer changes whenever you modify the question.

      “Tall Paul”

      p.s.—My Dad was wounded by a 500 lb. bomb dropped by a flying ME-262 he was trying to point out to his buddies. He really respects the ME-262.

      His favorite aircraft is undoubtably the P-47 Thunderbolt. He once saw one attacking a German flak-tower. After taking a direct hit the P-47 staggered, then flew away. My Dad and his buddies saw something fall off of the Thunderbolt, so they went over and found two complete cylinders from the P-47’s radial engine,…yet the “Jug” still flew home. Wow!, Impressive. Dad said the XIX Air Force P-47’s saved his as* on numerous occasions. It was without a doubt, the BEST ground attack aircraft in WW2, possibly of all time.

      I understand your thoughts about the JUG being the best ground attack aircraft of WWII. But I question your comment “possibly of all time”. As I recall, the F4U was considered a great ground attack aircraft so much so that continued to be produced into the 1950s. Not sure of the date. I think it was powered by the same radial engine as the P-47. The F4U was one of the best friends of the 1st Marine division at the Frozen Chosin area of N. Korea in 1950. Of course in later times we must consider the A-10. But as far as WWII is concerned the F4U has to be considered for its longivity and versatility. Carrier based as well as land based.

      Star Wars for me. When I saw the first one, I think it was like 1979, it reminded me of an old fashioned pirate movie set in outer space.

      I cant wait either! The one team that beat Alabama had a mobile quarterback. NDs QB is very young. If he plays error free he will be hard to contain. If the Bama offensive line can defeat the front four of ND where they can get some blocks on ND linebackers then lookout for the Bama running game. On the other hand ND has made their living defending inside the red zone where they have less territory to defend. I think Golson can make some plays if Bama crowds the line of scrimmage to stop the run. ND must play error free football to win.

      @Imperious:

      I will say something…

      That map has too many territories and too many pieces. It looks too crowded. It looks like it would take 2 hours just to roll out the battles and that 2/3 of the pieces are gone on turn 1.

      That does not look fun to play and for those reasons i summarize, people were not looking in that direction for an eastern front style game.

      Just being candid, my map/game is not better. It has to look like something larry would design, and he always goes for simple maps.

      I intend to find out when we play our first game this coming thursday. My first thoughts when setting this game up were that the map probably needs to be 50 % larger. The zones on the Russian border are very crowded. The first turn will take more time than most of the others. There will be details to work out or house rule. We will start do find these when we play the first game.

      I was thinking that there would be more interest in this game. I have been seeing posts dating back several years by members wanting a Russian front game. I do not see much activity on BGG either. Where are all the players that expressed interest in this type of game?

    • RE: Attacking a British convoy

      Yes, I think the subs at night would be an option. If all I had was a pocket battleship then I would attempt to time the attack from long range in heavy weather. Then after inflicting what damage I could do with 11in. guns I would run. The destroyers could not maintain my speed in the rough seas. So only the cruisers would be able to pursue. If the cruisers continued to pursue then I would try to contact those subs and direct them to the convoy. If the cruisers quit following and turned back then I would turn 90 degrees and give them a full broadside while in range just for fun. Remember the typical cruiser only has 8in. guns. I would make all my attacks keeping the saftey of my ship and crew in mind. Take the least risks that give the best rewards. No use blundering into range of all the enemy. If damage were done to my ship then I would have to return to port. I could not accomplish much that way.
