    • RE: Battle of Midway

      This poll did not generate the interest that I assumed it would. I have locked the voting as it is time to move on to another subject. There were many different types of aircraft involved in this battle but I will confine my thoughts to the torpedo planes as that is what I voted for. The first single engine torpedo planes to attack the Japanese were six of the new TBFs from Midway. No hits were registered. One made it back to Midway. The first of the carrier torpedo planes to attack were Sixteen TBD Devastators from USS Hornet. (VT8) Because of confusion and inexperience they attacked without fighter cover. One man survived. Again no hits. The next group to attack were fourteen TBDs from USS Enterprise. (VT-6) Again no hits and eleven were lost. The last torpedo attack was made by thirteen TBDs from USS Yorktown. (VT-3) Once again no hits were scored and twelve planes were lost. But by this time ALL of the Japanese fighter cap was down to the deck to stop all of these torpedo planes. By chance this is when the dive bombers made their attack which lasted only about three minutes and left three Japanese carriers burning. Of course there were many others who gave their lives on Midway, on Enterprise and on the destoyer USS Hammann who never even got to see the enemy fleet. But those young men in the torpedo bombers gave their lives without even knowing the outcome of the battle. Can we even begin to imagine what their last thoughts were? They all contributed all that they could for this country. It is a shame that so many young people today have no clue what those men did for all of us.

    • RE: German WWII Technology

      I have previously posted why I think the ME262 would have had an influence on the eastern front. With contol of the air over Europe, there would have been no d-day in 1944 which would have freed many German divisions to be transfered there as well as many Luftwaffe units. (Bombers) Would there have been a different outcome at Kursk (Operation Citadel July 5th 1943) with Germany in control of the air? I think that a stalemate would have occured and maybe a slight chance of a truce. With extra German forces in northern Italy the allies probably would have been stopped there also. Remember the choice in this poll was large numbers of ME262s in EARLY 1943. @ABWorsham:

      The British and U.S bombing of Germany did not cause Germany’s loss in WW2. The vast area of the U.S.S.R and the millions of Soviet troops was the doom of Germany. The Sturmgewehr 44 was the best of the poll choices to check the Red Army. The Me-262 would have little value on the Eastern Front.

    • RE: Should Field Marshal Games Create new pieces for AAP40 & AAE40

      I AGREE. The cardboard may take up less space but they are too hard to see with plastic chips and units stacked all around. @Bob_A_Mickelson:

      I must say that I cant get over my disappointment that the new A&A Pacific and Europe 1940 games will now feature cardboard units for the Major and Minor industrial complexes as well as cardboard AA guns, Air and Navy bases. I hope that creating plastic versions of these units will be a project that FMG will be willing to take up in the future.

      Do any of you agree?

      The B-25 would not be a good choice for a tactical bomber in the AA games as they must be a good fit for the Aircraft carriers. I am assuming that FMG will have an SBD for that. @Entek:

      I agree with previous posters that this is one of the occurrences where WOTC got it right with the B-17’s, but for variety’s sake I vote for B-29’s.  If nothing else they could be used for the Long Range/Heavy Bombers Tech pieces for the USA.  Now if you’re talking US Fighters I vote for P-47’s, and I think that the B-25 would fill the more Tach Bomber Roll then a Strategic one.

      We do not want to get into a situation where we have two different tactical bombers similar to the deal in AAP40 where we got P-38s to put on the carriers. Then we had to rob F6Fs from another game for our navy. That would leave the B-24 and the B-29 as choices. Of course the B-29 would be a good fit for the heavy bomber tech.

    • RE: Your Favourite Nation

      I think playing the U.S. presents such a challenge. To see if you can stay out of the way of the Japanese leviathan until you are strong enough to be a help to your allies. Of course you cannot wait too long or you will not have any ally to help. If Japan comes after U.S. straight away then that gives the U.K. and ANZAC a chance to breath. If Japan goes after India and the Indies first then that gives the U.S. a chance to build up a sizable navy. Of course I am talking about Japan declaring war on the first round which gives the U.S. a large payday at the end of their first round and from then on. If Japan splits its forces, then of course that will slow them down at the same time the U.S. is taking in big bucks. If Japan is trying to attack everyone at one time, then that means they may not have the numbers to overcome poor dice rolls. It seems to me the best strategy for Japan is to go after one or the other with full force which like I said lets the other have a chance to breath. And if Japan does go after U.S. with only part of its navy, then they run the risk of losing half of their navy real quick as the U.S. can build up fast with that income.@hewhoisnickel:

      So far America is in the lead. Would anyone who voted for the US care to explain why? I’m somewhat interested, as the US are far from all the action in Asia, and, though they are powerful, they seem kinda boring. I even prefer playing as UK/China combined, which is actually quite fun, just so long as you aren’t up against a expert player who can crush you in just a few turns.

      Amen to that.@Brain:

      Everyone is just gettin’ antsy around here. I am sure everyone is happy that there is something to look forward to, and they will be happier when they have them. I for one appreciate everything that you are doing.

    • RE: German WWII Technology

      I looked at the Air War on your link. That is some amazing and scary stuff.@Viracocha:

      @Fishmoto37:

      As I indicated in my earlier post on this subject, I think the war could have been extended into 1947-48 with the domination of ME262S in EARLY 1943. Germany was nowhere near producing an A-Bomb in 1945 and I doubt they would have had one by 1947-48. The U.S. and U.K. would have caught up with Germany in the production of jet fighters by then. The war could have ended earlier depending on the willingness of the U.S. to use the A-Bomb over europe. This would have saved many lives on the battlefield but cost many additional civilian lives. I would not want to have to make that decision.

      Yep, I read your indication.  Incidentally, I posted a link to some interesting alternative WWII history you might find interesting (I’d call it amusing but that would make the content sound funny… it’s not).

      I guess it must be a good thing. We all like to play these war games so we must all be mental cases!@Brain:

      Brain, you are a mental case! Oh I forgot, you have been damaged.@Brain:

      Thank you for noticing. I take great pride in being a mental case. That’s a good thing. Right? :|

      Brain, you are a mental case! Oh I forgot, you have been damaged.@Brain:

      I have a better solution:

      Player 1 - Axis
      Player 2 - Allies

      What do you think? Axis and Allies. Has a familiar ring to it. Kind of catchy, huh?

      @Brain:

      @dakgoalie38:

      No, that’s just stupid.  Get out of here with your crazy ideas.

      With the ME262 in control of the skies, the processing of fuel would not be a problem. The Allies would have a terrible time trying to bomb the refineries. The losses would be unacceptable.@dinosaur:

      All the ME 262s in the world wouldn’t matter without the fuel to get 'em in the sky.  The problem was bigger than a lack of hardware.  The Atom Bomb, on the other hand, would have been a game changer with the other resources already at Germany’s disposal.

    • RE: German WWII Technology

      Oops, sorry Brain the ME262 was not around in 1940. It probably did not have the range to reach England and then hang around protecting bombers and engaging in dogfights even if it had been around in 1940. The ME109 had a similar problem. @Brain:

      The ME-262 would have changed the outcome in the Battle of Britain.

    • RE: German WWII Technology

      The ME262 in LARGE NUMBERS in early 1943 would have given the Germans air superiority in the skies of Europe and over the eastern front as well. Resulting in a stalemate in the Soviet Union and no bombing campaign over Europe. There would be no D-Day in 1944 so the Germans could transfer units to the eastern front. The war would go on into 1947-48.

      The code breakers and the dive bomber pilots are VERY GOOD votes. I will post my thoughts when the poll ends. Just think about the most that any one of these groups could contribute. It was a team effort for sure. I want to hear some more comments before this post ends. Could all of you that vote post a short comment on the vote that you made? I have been wondering how many people outside of this forum even know anything about the battle of Midway.

      Say Brain, who was it that opened the door for the dive bombers so that they could waltz right in without being attacked by the interceptors and what did it cost? @Brain:

      The guys who damaged the aircraft carriers(dive bombers)

      Subotai, I do not understand what you mean by “skills”. I guess I must be dense or something. And how did the Japanese spot the U.S. first?@Subotai:

      It was not only skills who decided the battle of midway, the Japanese spotted the US first.
