RE: House Rule for Subsposted in House Rules
My sons and I have played AA for 10 years or so now. We began with the original version, then AA50 and purchased 1940 2nd edition Europe & Pacific in Nov of last year.
We recently adopted a new house rule for submarines that I wanted to share with this forum.
After purchasing new subs or if existing subs are not used in combat or in a SZ for convoy disruption, a player may choose to submerge or hide a sub and remove from the board & move it any number of legal spaces. As we are family, we use an honor system and simply write down the SZ number moved from & to or in the case of my sons they keep track on the iPads.
The theory is to provide an element of surprise and increase subs value especially late in the game.
For example, if US buys 2 subs in Pacific, on the next turn US player can remove subs from SZ10 write down SZ the subs have moved to and place them in the corner of the board. We use the ‘mobilization zone’ on the PAC board as the sub pen. Once a sub is used in combat or convoy disruption it remains visible on the board until the next round where the player can choose to move/submerge it into a different SZ.
As you can imagine, Germany can benefit by having one or 2 subs in Atlantic that the Allies have to account for but not really know where they are. Same goes for UK & ANZAC in the South Pacific.  And even Japan can move sub down to New Zealand in 2 turns unbeknownst to ANZAC & kill any new unprotected transports ANZAC places off Sydney (my son has done this to me twice in recent weeks!!)
In tournament play or if there is concern that the honor system would not work, one could use a small slip of paper for each sub to write down SZ and place the paper under the sub.
We have used this house rule in 3 global games & have found that it adds another level of strategy & has also increased sub purchases in mid to late rounds.
 We have used this very same rule for some time. Adds just a little more time to your game but if you dont mind the longer games then no problem. When a destroyer or cruiser with ASW capability stops in a hidden sub zone then we roll for detection. (maximum of two ASWs to one sub) Same for convoy zones. ASWs roll one die each and sink on a 1, detect on a 2 with a D-6 system. Detected subs are laid over and do not cause IPC loss. Unescorted transports and capital ships are just not logical.

RE: 2013 POLL: What Axis & Allies Games do you play?posted in General Discussion
Man all this and no comments about the poll?  I thought it was a little funny…
 There have been polls like this in the past. Dont get discouraged, maybe the lack of interest is due to that. Noticed that D-Day is right up there with global in the voting. Did not care for D-Day myself.

RE: 2013 POLL: What Axis & Allies Games do you play?posted in General Discussion
@wittmann:
I plan to create a battle of Kursk game on ToI map tiles using axis and Russian units that I been using with Barbarossa. But I better quit here because this is all top secret stuff!
I would love to know how that goes!
Can I ask if it will be a short campaign(like D-Day), or to the end of the war?Yes it will be a short campaign. But not anything like D-Day! We gave up on D-Day long ago. Kursk will be more like the barbarossa game that we are currently play testing. I will say this. I will start setting up the map as soon as we finish the Barbarossa game. (One more session probably next week) Thirty ToI tiles will fit nicely under a 36x72 piece of fiberglass. The actual size of the map will be 64.5 inches long by 37.5 inches wide. If you have ever seen photos of ToI games you will notice gaps between the tiles as they cannot be kept from moving. The fiberglass should prevent this. I will post photos on “Other AA Varients” as testing progresses. By the way, the AA plastic sculpts should work better scale wise with a ToI map than the plastic units that come with the game. The terrain printed on ToI maps is really great. Plus with the overlay tiles the options are endless. Enough for now.

I plan to create a battle of Kursk game on ToI map tiles using axis and Russian units that I been using with Barbarossa. But I better quit here because this is all top secret stuff!

RE: Texas declared independence from Mexico today in 1836posted in General Discussion
This is the last day for the Alamo letter to be on display. The famous letter written by Will Travis 177 years ago has returned to the Alamo for the first time since it was sent out. It has been on display from the 24th of Feb. thru March 7th. I saw it on displayed on live video like some kind of shrine. There appears to be constant security right there with it at all times. I did not know that the letter still existed.

RE: Favorite MiG Fighterposted in World War II History
Why do I need to have a favorite Mig? Oh well, if I must I will pick the Mig 15. When it first appeared on the world scene (Korea) it was superior to all straight wing jets. It stopped the B-29 raids on N. Korea until the F-86 was fully operational for combat. That was kind of a big deal to me when I was a kid. That was the time in my life when I was making plastic aircraft models. Yes, we had those way back in the early 50s.

RE: Military History's Best Loserposted in World War II History
My grandfather fought with the British Expeditionary force in Russian fighting for the Tsarist side. I wish I knew more about him. I do know he was fighting past when the war with Germany was over and his side didn’t win, the Tsarists lost. As a young boy I remember him talking about crossing the ocean, ship losing a propeller in the storm, catching fire and sinking the day after it got into port and then it got bad he said and didn’t talk more about it. Of course he was 72 the day I was born so was pretty old by the time I could remember him and his few stories. He was born in 1895 and his first kid was in 1935 so no doubt the war affected him to start a family so late.
You know you are getting old when you can remember talking to somebody born in the 1800s……
Hey,I resemble that remark!

RE: Most underrated WWII weaponposted in World War II History
The most underrated fighter in WWII was the F4F Wildcat. It did the job in the early days in the Pacific. Then in the later years in the battle of the Atlantic it perfomed a role in convoy escort. Where would we have been without it?

At the time of the civil war Gov. Sam Houston of Texas refused to secede from the union. I think he resigned as gov. as most of the state wanted to join the confederacy.

RE: Tigerman's Barbarossa Game now at HBGposted in Other Axis & Allies Variants
@SS:
I’m just going to put this game away for awhile until all the changes stop.
 Do not hold your breath until all the changes stop. This Barbarossa game is still in the testing stages. Look how many changes Larry Harris made through the years. Started with a simple global game and now how many are there now? Plus two Europe and two Pacific games. Axis and Allies games are always about change. Trying to improve and make them better. Jump into Barbarossa with both feet and post your thoughts.
 This is so true. Remmber that Larry has a lot more in resourses than I. So that means you guys are key in making these games better!! I know it can be frustrating at times to play a game that has a few broken rules but that is why your feedback is so valuable. I have an update version of the rules already sent to HBG for reviewing so it shouldn;t be too much longer.
This is good to hear. Hope you have come up with some rules to involve generals.

Here we are after six turns when we stopped todays session. Second photo shows the front lines. Snow and rain plus Russian rear guard have slowed the axis advance. The Russians are now at full production.

Here is today’s test game of Barbarossa. Situation after one turn. Notice that Russia has a rear guard blocker in every zone ready for turn two.

Should have been a candidate for the darwin awards! But she survived and it was not her fault so I guess technically would not meet the criteria.
