    • RE: The Existence of God

      I have “some education.” And I will accept that micro-evolution has been proved. However, macro-evolution has way way too many holes.

      Sure our theory about evolution is not perfect, but it’s still a very powerfull tool. The theory that species evolve and change is very hard to refute, as hard as to defend the position that the earth is flat or 6 000 years old.

      The overall evolutionary theory of slow gradual change due to environment (survival of the fittest) and gradual solar based mutations works well most of the time. However, some scientists still refuse to accept that at certain times in evolutionary history that certain groups will mutate at varied rates, appear or disappear, or radiate differently than the above. They also rule out cosmic or earthly mass disasters as “factors” to the process.

      As a matter of fact now we use the theory of complexity to understand evolution, and in this theory there is two type of changement (evolution); homeostatic and catastrophic. When you speak of gradual evolution, you speak of homeostatic changement. A good exemple of catastrophic changement is the vampire finch in the galapagos, he was force to eat blood on other bird because he lack food, evolutionist believe his beak will adapt very fast.

      There is way too much proof to deny evolution.

      Agree

      Capitalism - Strict Darwanism here. The Winners make money and get bigger (Evolution) and the losers die out (Evolution).

      Application of darwinism “capitalism” is called “Social Darwinism”, and it’s a little like fixism, it was used to maintain the Status quo. Also evolution is about… changing and mouvement, if we use the concept of evolution to promote inertia, there is a problem somewhere. Finally; i don’t think the strong are favored in capitalism.

    • RE: Turkey

      I would love to see the turks in the EU, once they throw away that stupid death-sentence.

      Turkey abolished the death penalty

      The problem is that the EU already is clumsy in its bureaucracy, and it will be evenworse with the accepted newcomers.
      What has to be done, is give the EU more power over the nations, but of course no nation, especially the bigger ones, likes that.

      I agree, but the UK does’nt even want the Euro, i doupt they will agree to centralization, it’s not in their nature.

      The EU surely is not a “christian club”, but it started out as western euopean club, then the scandinavians and some mediterraneans joined… now the east is joining, and then it’s the balkans (including turkey) turn…
      it will take some time i fear…

      It certainly look like a christian club, we have very little reason not to accept Turkey as a candidate, Europe would benifit from this door to the middle-east.

      @dIfrenT:

      Just wondering, but do most of you believe that truth is relative? And from what I’ve seen, are most of you evolutionists?

      I think there is not much people (at least not people with some education) that will claim evolution does’nt exist at all, but some think an anthropomorphic god is needed.

      Quite frankly, I don’t see how you can come up with enough faith to believe that conglomeration of truth and falsehood.

      We have no ultimate truth, but some thing are so probable/impropable… And when there is no reason to believe something is true, the only thing you can do is postulate it is false.

      I’ll accept most of the evolutionary “theory”. It is clearly not exactly the “truth” as well. However here in this case, the truth is far more elusive…

      Sure the truth is elusive, when we introduce the 0 in math, we thought it would resolve lots of problem, it did, but now we got even more question. our current theory about evolution is not the “truth”, it’s just part of the truth.

      @Yanny:

      Don’t see any reason why not. They could benefit from the Euro.

      I know they will, but here some people believe they will not be a great asset for Europe. I am for the integration of Turkey, after all, the EU is not a christian club. The only potential problem is the weight of a big country like Turkey in the Union…

      @GeZe:

      I think Bulgaria should be in the EU

      Your people is very receptive, the support for EU membership is the highest (or a little behind Romania maybe); ~75%. Romania and Bulgaria should be in the EU after the integration of the current 10 new country, but for Romania it’s not certain, they are way behind Bulgaria in adopting EU legislation.

      Then why not using a base pi ? (Using an unreal number as a basis make all real number seem like unreal)

      Anyway, about the 7 fingers, 14 could be a logical choice, on earth some people use a base 20 system (some celtic people if i remember right).

      Just try to get a new babylonian empire up and running, and you’d be happier there, Fin

      Sure… their base 60 system was inventive

      your mathematician… what do you care about reality ?

      I care just enough so I or my girlfriend does’nt end like Cantor.

      @GeZe:

      I made a base 7 number system

      Base 7 !?!?! Sorry to say that but that is probably the worst base i’ve heard of… In a base 7, it would be very hard to divide, all fraction are problematic. Sure normal number are “ok”, 22 in base 10 is 32 in base 7; so no advantage, no disadvantage. But it’s a prime number, all division are problematic.

      0,1 in base 7 = 0,142857… in base 10
      0,2 … = 0,2857…
      0,3 … = 0,4285…
      0,4 … = 0,5714…

      Very… useless numbers.

      Try to find 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5 in a base 7 system; it’s never simple, why using that kind of base ?

      If i like basis like 12 or 60, it’s that you can easily put in fraction 1:3, 1:2 and 1:4, and these are the 3 most common division. Even if i know we are not going to change our base, 10 seem to be naturel, as we have 10 fingers probably.

      ha ha ! You see, that’s why i hate our sytem on base 10, in a base 12 system, 133.3333333333333 (inf) would be B1.4 (were B is the number for XI (11)). Far more simple…

      hmmmm… i’m completely out of reality here no ?

      4000 pages per month… sure…

      It’s ~130 pages by days, dependint on what he read, what he count (does he count school reading?) and how old he is, this is not necessarly false or exagerated.

      Maybe reading is’nt “cool”, but it’s good to know some are reading other thing than the TV guide.

      MoinMoin all

      And none of us envy the states (nor are we envied to any violent extent, apparently for some reason).

      I agree (yea yea), it’s very easy to say “you’re jealous”, but a little harder to back the claim. I woul’nt want to live in a country were people get executed, were religion is a pillar of the society, and were the poor are second class citizen; i don’t call that liberty.

      Sure, there’s lots of anti-american feeling, our president (germany) was elected because of his anti-american position, same thing the the SD in sweden, exept the UK, no one like the US, and one day, americans will have to stop thinking other are just jealous and start thinking why so much people don’t like them. Every super-power in the world were not that much rejected.

      1. The US was founded through a Revolutionary War, Canada was founded through negotiation with the British (a much more peaceful atmosphere)

      Right, but this does’nt mean anything, while the method used were not… ethical, the idea behind the revolution was justified.

      Canada is much mroe just and fair than the United States, I find.

      And you can walk into the street in Toronto or Montreal without bodyguards :)

      @FinsterniS:

      IF “evil” really exist…

      I find this rather amusing how often Americans are using these concept (Good and Evil), without considering how subjective they really are.

      interesting. Germans, however, a more superior culture, views the world in much more objective terms whereby “evilness” is more relative? If history did not already prove this concept so horrifying, i might be amused by it as well.
      mind you, i’m not an American. . . .

      Being a german does not make me inapt to make critic as far as i know. Also I never said German culture was superior and you know that. I just oberve two thing;

      • The concept of “good” and “evil” is very present in the American culture. Not because they are idiot or ignorant, it’s just from their culture.

      • These concept are subjective, they have no real objective valor. Dirrefent culture, different people will call different thing “evil” and “good”.

      About german history i would say that Nazism is the perfect exemple of a Black & White ethic, Jew are “evil”, Aryan are “good”. Just like empty statement like “sex is evil”, “passion are evil”, “communism is evil”, “muslim are evil”, “america is the great satan”….

      Never mind that Quebec is not traditionally a bastion of tolerance to begin with - may Jacques forgive you if you are not white, and do not speak French as a first language.

      I’ve heard very few french being as agressive towards the english as you are towards the french. You are not an isolated case, i’ve read some paper, written on West of canada, they have nothing to envy to any racist. They hit on french like hell, calling them frog, racist, even nazi on some case, and when quebec want separation, they are all on their knees, claiming they love quebec…. Make me think of Stoiber and his politic with the Turk, it’s pure hypocrisy.

    • RE: Do Jews Have a Right to Representation? Some Think Not.

      Not false at all, jew seem to be the universal bouc émissaire of the occident (…and middle east).

      @EmuGod:

      Jews are the most hated people in the world, more than any other group.

      Yes, but jew don’t think it’s normal because they are special, like those christian martyr ? Just a question…

      Anti-semitism is on the rise again.

      Maybe, but it’s still not as high as it was, and some are calling on anti-semitism a little fast…

      In Quebec rocks were thrown when Benjamin Netanyahu tried to speak.

      Well, i don’t call that anti-semitism, there was a manifestation to say he was not welcome in University (i don’t remember which one, but i’ll ask my father-in-law), they only did throw rocks at ONE (ONE) windows if i remember right…. Sure i am not for this kind of violence, but the manifestaion was justified, sure Netanyahu honored the term of the Hebron agreement, but his attitude towards the palestinians was brutal, he did not concede a lots of things.

      and there have been flare ups in Europe, particularly in France.

      Like what ? You know we have problem here too with islamic extremist, and if you look a little closer, you’ll see we had lot of manifestation of sympathy towards the jews. Not that there is no anti-semitism…

      http://www.sofres.com/etudes/pol/081101_conflit_r.htm

      As Herzl put it, the Jews are hated by the right for being revolutionaries such as Karl Marx. The Jews are seen by the right as radicals that want to change society.

      The Jews are hated by the left because they are seen as traditionalists who refuse to give up their traditions and have lots of money and wealth.

      I think there is a social reason, not a spiritual one, to anti-semitism, it’s propably why people from all classes and most ideology are “using” the jew as bouc émissaire. Jews are impossible to assimilate, they remain jew, they have a different religion and an interpretation of their people that can be considered a little egocentric. So they are often attacked, for no real reason, they are just jew, the universal bouc émissaire… quite sad.

    • RE: What the USA Can Do to Save the World . . .

      The best way United States can go about is to promote Communism around the world.

      America is too conservative and too individualistic… Even france, which have some radical-socialist as president in the third republic, would not be able to build a communist state; too occidental…

      We are VERY far from a communist state, we are in an era of indivudualistic value, people think first for themself…
