    • RE: Christian Bible - Truth or Lies?

YB - I agree. I feel active adult debate is healthy.

We came to the conclusion on earlier threads that the Bible could not be taken literally. Again, only the faithful can find rationale in it. I have little doubt that “Jesus” the man existed. Without the miracle and supernatural events, he was a revolutionary in religious thought. Proof in his resurrection (or not) is impossible to achieve and again left to the faithful.

If you want to explain the Bible in literal terms, explain this:
“Let US make man in OUR own image, according to OUR likeness”
      GEN 1-26
Who are “US” and “OUR” ???
      “that the sons of GOD saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful;
and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose”
      GEN 6-2
      and
“There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of GOD came in to the daughters of men and they bore children
to them. Those were the mighty men who were old, men of renown.”
      GEN 6-4
Monotheistic God or alien intervention ???

      Reference - Ibid

    • RE: The Existence of God

Wild2000 - I doubt Jesus would have endorsed the Crusades. Once the Roman Empire officially converted to Christianity (for political reasons) the rulers over the next few centuries added most of the rules (for the Catholic Church) outside the Bible we’re familiar with now. Obviously people would dispute such changes considering them heretical (illegal). This is why we had the Schism in the 11th century and later the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. If interpretations remained consistent this would not happen.

There is little doubt that Jesus was executed by crucifixion (by Roman law). I was just illustrating the point I was making…

    • RE: German strategy

Sounds like somebody has been reading Don’s strategy site again. The danger with the Japanese fleet operating so far away from home waters is that the Sea of Japan transports are totally unprotected. The Alllies can drop bombers in Russian Asia easily since Japan is delayed in taking it with style of playing. This wipes out the Japanese transporting to Asia. This cannot happen for Axis victory. Also, the Allies although losing some extra territory (Brazil and/or South Africa), could operate normally anyway. The Japanese fleet is a threat in the Atlantic, but I’d play defensive and wait for them to attack. It would be easier to buy some extra naval units to use as fodder (The Allies would have the time to do so), than to panic and buy extra aircraft or more expensive naval units to directly deal with it. The British transporting to Africa, can overwhelm any Axis IC in Africa…

This is more of a scare tactic and a delaying one. Allies, keep your cool and take advantage of it…

    • RE: The Existence of God

The purposes will vary slightly from belief system to belief system. Writings such as the Judeo-Christian Bible and/or the Moslem Koran will in of themselves have more of a noble purpose. Peace, prosperity, fertility, brotherhood, to name a few. However, later human interpretations of these early books will usually loose the original meanings. Influenced by the current governmental systems in charge; purposes such as conquest, conversion (religious), territorial expansion; are added to the list. If Jesus saw what we were doing in his name after 2000 years, he’d spin in his grave fast enough to power New York City! (Theoretically of course, the Christians believe he rose into Heaven).

The purpose for animals, you know the answer - TO SERVE MAN…
Why? This I answered in the “Religion” thread topic…

Outstanding. This clearly shows the need for the Allies to eliminate the German fleet or at the very least strengthen defences at it’s home territories!

Hate to change the tone, but I’m a heavy moderate. All sides have good points to the issues. Moderates have to make them work in the form of compromise. Don’t stand on either side of the fence, sit on it and take a good look around…

I have Civilization : Call to Power. It came out after Civ II. I’ll play it when I get that “want to rule the world itch”. Anyone have Civ III?

    • RE: The Existence of God

Well, it’s about time I jump in here. YB - you get an “A” for time and effort.

Is our mere existence prove enough for God? We might be treading lightly here. It’s still an assumption based on faith. The one of many ultimate questions unanswerable and unprovable accredited to a diety.

There is no question that religion has helped in the creation of laws/moral codes/ethics. Is this proof of God? They are creations of the faithful humans who choose to improve society/civilization. However, the early endorsed moral codes were far from complete. Slavery is a good example. First it was shown to be uneconomical in certain areas, then later, shown to be immoral. This wasn’t until the 19th century! Some morals…

We view the Universe from our little planet with our limited science and technology. Anyone with the answers is suffering from misguided arrogance. Many answers to the Universe will remain outside human comprehension. Our increasing science will help us understand more and more over time, but the ultimate questions will still elude us.

Humans have created their view of the Universe. They have also throughout history, created their gods…

F_alk - Your right, it is a consideration to buy the best fuel efficient car for your needs. I was demonstrating that it is not feasible for everyone to have cars designed for the maximum, since people with families couldn’t possibly buy them…

    • RE: What is liberty?

Being an ex-sailor, it’s limited time off from the ship. It’s a priviledge that can be taken away due to improper behavior. It’s like working during the day, going home, coming back to work the next day. Your off time is liberty. In contrast is “leave”, which is several days to weeks or a month away from the ship…

I don’t think I could fit my family of 5 in a car designed for maximum fuel efficiency. They’re mostly small models designed for a driver and one passenger, really no back seats - hatchbacks…

    • RE: What old nostagic board games can you remember?

Under the Game Master Series the Roman Empire game was called, “Conquest of the Empire”. It had a unique feature. Legions could be commanded by generals that could be captured after battle. They could be held for ransom (in the form of payment in tribute or actions). They could be exchanged as POW’s with enemy players. The captured general could be executed anytime during one of your turns or even returned to your opponent as a good faith gesture for say an alliance. It was a good twist in the series. Unfortunately, I no longer have this game.

I don’t believe any theists would blame God for their mistakes or bad luck in life. Why push your luck? If God is teaching you some “lesson”, don’t risk pissing him off!!!

F_alk - That’s the reason for not polluting. The earth will survive us. But future human generations may not, along with other species - talk about genocide…

The other thing to consider is past pollution. Scientists tell us that in the earth’s past there have been periods of high vulcanism. Much worse, longer lasting, and toxic than anything we’ve thrown in the air. The earth survived. I’m not saying this to justify our polluting to kill our children, but the earth will outlive us…if that’s any help…

Remember, the fate of all species is extinction. Even ours…

    • RE: Prime Factor

TG Moses VI - out of stupid curiousity, I did a search on “Jedi Religion”. Apparently THERE ARE people out there claiming to be practicioners of the “force”! In fact, there are groups in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand who are trying to get their groups recognized by their governments as organized religion! This may be part of a rebellious online prank, but it’s happening all the same! I guess the Australian government is warning people with fines for falsifying the census when it comes around. Some groups seem to seperate their “dogma” from the Star Wars movies!?!?! Others seem to embrace George Lucas for showing them the “light”!!!

My friends, I try to be open minded and defend other’s beliefs. But this is too much even for me. What a bunch of wacko’s!!! I’ll admit I’m a big fan of Star Wars. You’ve gotta give George Lucas the credit. The guy takes a chance on a movie idea almost 30 years ago, turns it into top grossing films of all time, merchandising galore, and now spin-off religious groups! What’s next people praying at his feet? Lucas for Emperor? It’s not hard to see why people follow their Jim Jones’ and David Koresh’s (spelling?)!!!

When you talk global warming you talking in time periods of at least tens of thousands to millions of years. Has the industrial revolution to now effected the overall earth climate? I’d say no looking at it in an evolutionary time scale. Alledgedly, we are in a warm phase of the Ice Age. Will we stop the glaciers from advancing again in the next ten thousand or so years? Who knows!!!

TG Moses VI - back to your reply post on the 3rd to “the goal of evolution is survival”. Can we really still use natural laws to reference to the most domesticated animal - us! Humans make their populations what they want, evolution will play a small part. It matters little with today’s technology the ratio of male to females in our population.

So what’s this Jedi religion in the UK all about? Does it follow George Lucas’ story/dogma or is it different?
