      Feddy the FrogF

      Hey all,
      I’ve been around the forum for about three, four years and am just now starting to post haha. I have about 6-7 of these games including global, and I have to say that AH really got this one right.
      Around here, I see alot of people rightly complaining about the 1914, just in general. The lack of pieces, the asinine IPC chart (who thought that was a good idea?) and the laughable “balance” of the game OOB. I for one, did not care for the original 1942 because the board was too dang cramped! Pieces piled into Germany and sea zones in the pacific got crowded after three ships.

      But, although I am a active member of the BMW (bi+ch, moan and whine) society, I do want to take the time to tell Larry and the folks at AH (although they will never really see this) that they really did a fine job with this game! Germany finally has some space, the IPC chart isn’t larger than the board, the new chips are small enough for the game spaces and the balance is perfect. Sure, the allies could use 4-5 IPCs, but that is pretty dang good! I’ve only played it a couple times (gotta love Christmas gifts) but already it is one of my favorites. The map really allows for more strategies but still allows me to have a life.
      In all, I have seen a lot of people (me included) quite fairly say that some games were out of wack (pacific 1940?). But, if I get pissed then, I think it is only fair that I say that this game is quite possibly my favorite out of 7ish games, and that AH really got it right!  :-D

      @Freddy:

      Hey,
      I ordered Global War 1939 from HBG and I am completely happy with the board. The territories are big enough and am a huge fan of the additional territories to Russia and North Africa. The only gripe I have is that Japan is colored yellow instead of the more recognizable orange. Also the UK keeps changing colors but thats neither here nor there. Just to be fair I am using the D6 system that “Jeremy” from Field Marshal Games has created and the setup which he put a lot of work into.
      The setup is great! I love it… Thank you so much “Jeremy!”

      Having said all that: Is Japan too Strong?
      They make 40 IPCs a turn and can pretty much boss China around. The 20ipc Non-Aggression pact with Russia makes it so an invasion is unlikely from that area, and all the British and ANZAC forces can do is but pester the Japanese. Once the US gets in the war (only around turn 5-7) Japan (in our games) seems to make around 70 ipcs. They take all of China (+12) at least 2 of the DEI’s (+8) Hong Kong and French Indo-China (+6) and anything else they can grab. To my estimation that’s around 65 and 70. I can’t give you exact buys, but by then the Japanese can land around 10-12 guys in Asia, and can build a fleet to match the US. Any ideas on how to stop this, or (most likely) are we playing the game wrong?
      Any help would be help-ful  :-)
      Thanks, Freddy

      I’ve heard this is pretty common in 1939.

      IMO the best way to solve this is to split Japan into 2 different economies.

      One economy would use all of the IPCs in the Pacific, and the other would use all the IPCs on the mainland.

      In my experience the game is only playable by replacing ALL land and air units with chips bar the single infantry atop each stack. Even then it can still get crowded with units of 4 or 5 nations sometimes piling into a small tt.

      So for me a future version needs a few more infantry each and drop all the other land unit minis; and a big pile of extra chips, a different colour for each unit type.

      More likely a second edition will feature something along the lines of task force cards & markers; AH is not going to admit to the redundancy of plastic minis. Blow up boxes are a no-no.

      I agree w/Yavid. If he sends the RAF to the Med every game try building a carrier for Germany, and maybe 1 transport and/or a destroyer (needed to kill Russian sub(s) anyway). Don’t send your Battleship into battle G1, and you have a pretty good fleet in sz 112 (Loaded carrier, BB, Cruiser, Destroyer, transport) that can threaten Gibraltar (or Scotland if he thinks you might build more transports). If that doesn’t hold his ftrs in London then think about bombing London w/Germany. If you don’t want to sea Lion you may be able to send your fleet to convoy UK for a turn or so, then decide if you want to go to Gib, or back to the North Sea.

      Plan 2
      If the Germans get the S France IC on G1, you might drop a couple German subs in sz 93 on G2 (if the UK has lost its Med destroyer, or it is out of range). Those subs can pass through the straights of Gib BTW regardless who has control of it and can be a real threat w/German air power. You could also move your subs to Italian waters (sz 95) and still have great range from that naval base. Then drop the bulk of the German air force on Southern Italy to threaten any ship builds in the Med from Egypt with subs/air. I would also get a couple German planes to North Africa to protect Italian advances. The German air force can’t stay in Med too long, but they aren’t needed for Russia for awhile.

      I figure if he wants the UK air force in the Med then bring in the Luftwaffe.

      If you have the cash buy it. It’s better to have it than miss it. As Oz said also, the bigger board is soooo much nicer size wise.

      @Freddy:

      Hey Tigerman,
      I don’t think the scope of the game has to be any bigger than D-Day. I just want something that has a more tactical aspect, but still A&A. I felt BOTB got a little too “Not A&A.” I don’t want to learn a whole new game! Thanks, I would totally buy a Historical Board Gaming Theatre game!
      Freddy

      I agree BotB didn’t seem A&A much at all
