My response did address the pieces, but only to say that they won’t be giving any out unless you were missing some (didn’t tell me how many there should be) or there were broken pieces.

As an aside, when you’re replying to the email request for personal info, are you putting the info between the bits quoted below?

I think that they plan to do what you’ve said Variable. The likely thought that we’d all buy AA40E and as a result have a full Brit and US set. I’d hope the Germans and Russians get the Japanese treatment.
Now then, we have to question something. Since ANZAC has only a half set, and does not have a presence in Europe, I venture there will be special attention for the ‘extra’ armies (ANZAC, Italians, French, etc). This will be one of three things (all guesses on my part):
-
These armies aren’t in Global
-
Armies are lumped together based on alliance
-
Armies have so little production they are assumed to not need a full set

RE: Getting extra pieces?posted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I have 21inf for the US.( The only extra piece I have. None missing)
Looks like I got your missing US 1inf.
The bag stuffer for the US inf was having a bad day. :-(
Hey! That’s my infantry! Give him back!
I was thinking about asking for the unit, but one infantry for the US is going to be moot. Once AA40E comes out I’ll have a whole slew more.

All in all, this makes me feel that there is no forgiveness for mistakes in AAP40.
Yep, this was exactly the observation one of my friends made: “It’s very hard to win this game in a single turn, but it sure is easy to lose it in single move”. :)
My guess is that that is mostly due to the immense cost of the forces involved. If you lost a handful of planes and expensive ships in a single battle there is no way you’ll be able to replace them in any reasonable amount of time.
Add to that the abattoir that is mainland Asia and you have a decidedly bloody game. It’ll really make for interesting play in Global.

So I did a draft of the included pieces in my box. I’m guessing I did, in fact, get the right amount with one exception (US Infantry).

RED CHIPS - 10
GREY CHIPS - 50So, the 19 Inf for US looks funny to me. What burns a little is that when AAE40 comes out, the Brits and US will get a boost in units, but ANZAC and JAPAN have gotten all they’ll get. How am I supposed to have Japanese in Africa, hmm?
EDIT: Forgot to add the chip counts.

RE: Disapointedposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I understand what you are talking about but man you must really get lucky dice rolls or something. Either that or the Allies just have no luck at all because in the game I’m playing, the Japs have the edge right now but I have lost quite a bit to get China and India. And the US is coming on strong.
I saw a similar thing happen in the game I just finished. My opponent (Japan) was crushing the Chinese and British after forcing the Brits to re-enforce China in Brit2. I managed to come back but only because the US was never the target of concentrated force and my opponent let up the pressure on the Brits to tackle the Chinese.
I think everyone has a decent chance at this game, but experience and knowledge have major effects. My opponent never played A&A before this game so they fell for my whack-a-mole tactics with the Chinese. That said, I made a dumb move and lost the US airforce in the Carolines (I have almost 20 years experience). All in all, this makes me feel that there is no forgiveness for mistakes in AAP40.

RE: Point-defence islands - Airbases and 'Neighbour' Islandsposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Thanks for the complement. I came up with it as I was trying to figure out ways to specialize each army and still maintain a decent defence. Also, it allows some breathing on the part of Japan as you don’t need to constantly patrol the Asian coastline. I mean, jumpin’s, they’ve enough planes to go around.

Point-defence islands - Airbases and 'Neighbour' Islandsposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Okay, so I was playing AAP40 last night and I thought of a sneaky trick (it may have come up before). The only thing I’m wondering is about the rules involved.
Let’s say I build an airbase on Ceylon (it can be landed on as it is named, and nothing I’ve seen limits where airbases can be built) and support it with fighters.
Now, the Japanese float a fleet into the sea zone to assault India. As there is combat in the sea zone, and Ceylon is completely surrounded by that sea zone, can I scramble my planes?
As far as I saw doing a quick glance at the board this would also affect Hainan, Formosa, Okinawa and the Aleutian Islands. There may be some in the South Pacific but those are the major places to use this trick.

RE: Kill USA Firstposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Has anyone tried an invasion of Alaska, next turn land a lot of aircraft and more land units and then build a IC there?
That may work in the global game, but not Pacific. Considering the resources you have to put into it I don’t see it lasting. The US can drop up to ten units a turn, while you’re stuck at three. That means you have to invest in planes or transports to keep up.
Add to this that the US forces are doing a huge favour to the Allies by tying down Japanese units (need to hold Alaska). This leaves a hole in Asia that the Brits are going to charge through. If you’re feeling magnanimous with the ANZAC forces, and why wouldn’t you be, you can put their money into a navy to cover some of the shortfall for the US harrying Alaska.
In the end, I don’t think it will bear fruit.
That said, if you get lucky and actually manage to take the Western US, it would be pretty hard to catch Japan.

RE: China too weakposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I’ve typically used the Chinese as rear-defence for the British and as a threat to Japanese areas.
If I see the Japanese leave space open in China, I drop my troops there. It forces my opponent to draw off some forces from the British or give up a few IPCs and face more of the Chinese whack-a-mole attacks.

RE: The Manhattan Projectposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
In the old MB edition of the game, I’d always equated ‘Heavy Bombers’ as nukes.
Definitely a house rule, though. You could, alternately, work it as an alternate victory objective. The Allies could work towards it somehow, and the Japanese could thwart it through IPC capture. It probably won’t have the feel you’re going for though…

RE: Getting extra pieces?posted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Hey all, here’s the letter I sent:
Hello,
I purchased a copy of Axis and Allies Pacific 1940. Upon opening the box and
reviewing the contents I have found some issues. The battle strip provided
does not have the proper units listed. Also, after conducting setup I ran
out of Japanese Tactical Bombers, grey chips, and was running very low on
units for other forces. After one round my opponent and I had to use coins
as grey chips and pieces of paper to represent units. Further research has
shown me that there are rules errata (including initial setup changes) in
the works. I don’t feel this is an appropriate level of quality for a game
of this price. As a result, I have a few questions: Will a proper battle strip be
available? Will there be a new rulebook sent out with the errata? Will new
national army boxes be sent out to reflect setup changes? Will extra pieces
be made available, and if so, how?Thank you, and I await your response.
Honestly, I was a little terse in the email. I let my excitement get the better of me. But, hey, I had to cajole, convince, and confound my partner into buying this and play it.
Also, could someone give a count of the number of tact bombers and cruisers for Japan? Heck, if someone could give (or point to) a breakdown for each nation it would be appreciated. I’m wondering if I’ve gotten too few pieces (as opposed to not enough to enact my stratagems).

@Brain:
Hey EvilGardenGnome, can I call you EGG? Welcome to the forum.
Nice first post.Hello and thanks. Yeah, call me EGG.
Don’t enjoy the post too much. We’re not finished the game yet and it looks like my slaughter in China is the only highlight for Japan. The Brits have rallied and the US is a bugger. Focusing on the navy is letting them pick off my fleet.
In the long run, I should have put some more units in Asia (maybe a factory) and ignored ANZAC until after the Brits were done.

RE: Kill USA Firstposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I had this situation pop-up by accident in a game.
The UK re-inforced China in turn one (I had some nice rolls as Japan). I had some trannies ready to try and slaughter ANZAC early for some cheap IPCs. As a lark, I sent a small force (4 inf, 2 tank, 2 artillery) to BC. The idea was to either defend and build a sea base (it’s only three spaces from Japan so it held easy reinforcement opportunities) or invade Western US as my opponent had focused on a navy.
I went with a lark and invaded. I whiffed the first round and lost all my FLBCs so I retreated. The US ate the remainder for desert.
That said, if you build up the trannies and if UK or ANZAC provoke Japan before the US war-economy, and the US hasn’t built up the land forces, this could work. I think you’d be better off landing an offensive force. Though you could reinforce from Japan I really don’t think it’s worth it. Take the factory or take defeat.
