    • RE: Global 1940 on 1942 map?

      @Azpathfinder:

      Has anyone ever tried 1940 rules/units on the 1942 map?

      We have a group that enjoys to play, but 1940 is a serious time commitment that we just can’t schedule, and it seems to be taking the fun out of it (for us). When we played 1942, we could set up and play a few rounds in one night and while not always finishing, we could get a good enough sense in how the game was going to declare a victor.

      We do enjoy the new pieces and rules (scrambling, tac bombers, convoys, air fields, kamakazi, shipyards) from 1940 … has anyone ever tried to use them on the older, smaller, more manageable 1942 board? any tips? any existing transfer rules? any thoughts?

      Thanks everyone!

      I would stay away incorporating air bases, shipyards due to number of spaces on the 1942.2 map.

      Kamikazis and scrambling although fun, they will drastically change the overall strategy and dynamic of the game.

      Now when it comes to mechanized infantry and tactical bombers that’s something that can be integrated with success. I haven’t done it yet but will start trying it out now that my brother and I have about 20 games under our belt and can call ourselves intermediate players. I will post results and overall outcome. In my opinion it will slightly benefit the Axis thus making it even harder for the Allies.

    • RE: Aircraft Retreating from a Destroyed Carrier

      @simon33:

      So you’re saying an attacking fighter has moved 4 spaces to attack and the attack includes a CV which is its only landing spot, but the CV is taken as a hit and you then retreat? The fighter would be lost. So you wouldn’t do that. Take the fighter as a hit first and the CV lives to fight another day. Even if its only value is a 1/3 chance of hitting something.

      Thank you very much! It is all clear now.

      I guess I should’ve made it more clear. In my ‘made up scenario’ the attacking Japanese fighters and AC when they attacked the US cruiser and destroyer had already used all their moves. So the only safe place to land the fighter is the AC. But if the Japanese player decides to lose the AC can the Japanese fighter retreat to their adjacent island?

      @sephiroth7707:

      Maybe I have overlooked the passage in the rulebook: Are fighters always able to land to an adjacent country/island if their carrier is destroyed (in the enemy’s combat phase)?

      Thanks in advance!

      Only defending fighters. Not attacking ones.

      Let’s say Japan attacks a US fleet that is in a SZ adjacent to a Japanese Pacific island. Japan attacks with an AC and two fighters and US defends with a cruiser and a destroyer. First roll Japan gets one hit and US gets two hits. Can Japan decide to lose the AC and a fighter and withdraw the other fighter to the adjacent island? Or does Japan have no choice and has to keep attacking?

    • RE: Question About Fighters

      Thank you for the clarification. Seems a bit of an odd move but rules are rules.

    • Question About Fighters

      Let’s say UK buys an AC and at the non-combat movement the UK moves two fighters to an empty SZ adjacent to UK’s IC. Once the unit placement movement is complete the fighters can land on the AC. Is this a legal move?

    • AA50 was for Sale

      I am from Vancouver and once in a while I go on Craigslist to see if anything related with Axis and Allies is for sale. Well yesterday I saw there was a local copy of AA50 for $200 CAN which is like $140 US. The add was there since Feb. 3 and according to the owner the game was only played once and was in mint condition.

      I immediately e-mailed the owner and wanted to meet with him but he had to work until 6pm. So I suggested I can meet him right after work but he told me someone else contacted him just before me and was meeting with that person first. So I patiently waited until I got an e-mail back from the owner saying the game was sold. I was so sad!!! In fact I couldn’t sleep very well last night because of it. I made my own copy of AA50 but owning the original is just not the same. I wish I saw the add when it was first out. Opportunities like this are so rare. :-(

      That is interesting. For AA50 I though the 6 IPC tank would benefit Russia as personally I only build one and very rarely two tanks with Russia per turn where with Germany I would build three to four tanks per turn. I was hoping the 1IPC increase would balance the game a bit more as I think now it favors the Axis.

      For AA42.2 and AA50 I think the introduction of the Mech. Infantry would tilt the advantage towards the Axis. We haven’t tried it yet but when we do time will tell.

      For Tactical Bombers I don’t think there is an advantage or disadvantage for both sides.

      For AA50 what would you change the Mechanized Infantry technology if MIs are included in the game? Or should it stay the same?

    • RE: Are Mechs Too Strong?

      How about if you buy one mechanized infantry it costs 5 IPC, if you buy two it costs 9 IPC, three costs 14 IPC, four costs 18 IPC… So in other words it averages at 4.5 IPC.

      I will post the charts for sure as soon as the forum allows me. I believe there is a minimum posts I have to make before I can upload files, pictures etc.

    • Axis-Allies 7-0

      My brother and I have played AA42.2 seven times over the past couple of months and Axis have won every single time. We alternate who gets to play the Axis or Allies every new game so we both get good with strategies for both sides. The first 3 times we played the game as it comes out of the box. They were all blow outs and were completed in 4 or 5 turns victory for the Axis. The last 4 games we have given the allies a 9 IPC bid or a bomber in Moscow. I always choose to put 3 infantry in the Russian front and my brother once he chose the bomber in Moscow and the other time he chose 3 infantry in Russia.

      The games now take longer and are actually quite a bit of fun. The last game we played I had Allies and was kicking a$$ from round one (dice were good to me) but a crucial mistake on round 6 cost me the game. I lost Moscow by one bloody tank. At that time Germany also had Leningrad and Japan took Hawaii on the same turn as I went KGF and left Japan controlling the Pacific. If I would of held Moscow for one more turn the Axis had no chance as UK and USA were putting a lot of pressure on Germany for 3 rounds already.

      We will play AA42.2 until both of us have won with the Allies and after that we will move to AA50. I’ve created the AA50 version by printing IL’s beautiful map, made my own set up charts and purchased 1940 Global to use the Italian and Chinese pieces. Once we have enough of AA50 we will move to 1940 Global.

      Also I want to try the Mechanized Infantry and Tactical Bombers in the AA42.2 and eventually AA50. Not sure if anyone tried that. For AA50 we will have tanks cost 6 IPC’s just like AA42.2.

    • Made My Own AA50 Version

      I am a big fan of Axis and Allies since the late 90’s. I played the original version quite a bit, revised a bit but not as much as the original and now AA42 2nd edition. Between revised and AA42 2nd edition (2007 to 2013) I had a long A&A break, not sure why, I guess I didn’t have anyone to play with since my buddy that I usually played with moved away. Now I got my brother hooked up and we try to have one game per weekend. Also I found out that some people from my work are into board games so I suggested to host an A&A games and they were all for it.

      Anyways this post is more to show you what I have done for my AA50 version since during my 6 year break I missed the opportunity to purchase this legend. Credit for the players aids goes to Credulous and credit for the map goes to IL. I made the set up charts which I am starting not to like as they are bit large but they will do for now. You’ll notice that in the set up charts I’ve included the mechanized infantry and tactical bomber under the units section. I haven’t really played an AA42 or AA50 game with those units yet but I am planning to try (anyone that did try the MI and TB comments are appreciated). Also I like the tank cost of 6 IPC’s for the AA50 version. Finally I bought AA Global 1940 just to have access to the Italian and Chinese pieces.

      For some reason the forum doesn’t allow me to post pictures. It says “Sorry, you are not allowed to post links.” As soon as I figure out what’s going on I will post my pictures.
