    • RE: Where I changed my mind in regards to my AnA Classic strategy.

Anyone can set up a public game for others to join. If we can agree on a time, I’m happy to create a game for us. I’ll call it “Aces Wild” so you know which to join if there are multiple games available. Take a look at the preview tab and try out a few moves. Some things aren’t completely intuitive, like using transports. It all makes sense once you see how the creator of the site set thing up, though.

Thanks for posting the videos. Do you play on gamesbyemail? If so, I would love to play a series of games and test out your theories.

    • RE: Annoying tactics and strategies?

Do any of you find it cheap/annoying when an allied player lands on Spain in order to establish a Western front against Germany?  This has been a common tactic of mine, and I had a gamesbyemail player call it cheap just recently.  I haven’t seen that strategy criticized before, so I’m curious if others share the opinion.

    • RE: Yes, but what about the original Axis and Allies?

As a relative newbie, I’ll second the opinion that this section should carry the title “classic.”  Those of us stuck in the 80s (there are more of us than you might think!) find the title “2nd edition” meaningless.

    • RE: First Edition Allied Help

I can offer a really useful and detailed response for classic (2nd ed.), but I haven’t played First Edition. Are the two similar enough that a 2nd edition example would be helpful?

    • RE: Annoying tactics and strategies?

One more I thought of is when a player abuses the technicalities of retreat rules. If I understand the rules correctly, you can attack a country from two sides and then retreat all units to one of those sides.

So if a German player marches 40 infantry to Ukraine and the Allied player threatens Berlin by piling units into EE, the German player can attack from both Germany & Ukraine then retreat all units to Germany after one round of combat.

The big one for me is rolling for weapons development early on. It makes the game so much more dependent on luck rather than skill. I don’t mind if someone realizes they’re losing and takes a crack at getting heavy bombers, but attempts in the first few rounds are annoying.

As for ignoring Japan with the U.S., that just seems like good sound strategy to me. The Americans can do a lot more against Germany.

    • Japanese Attack on Atlantic Fleet

Do you ever plan, from the outset, to send a combination of planes and ships to attack the American/British Navy in the Atlantic?  I’ve found this to be the most effective way to get Japan directly involved in the game rather than just nibbling at the edges.  The plan requires a skilled defensive strategy with Germany, likely with 100% infantry purchases.  It has worked well in my recent games, however.

Japan must accept that it will not significantly pressure Moscow, but it can still easily build enough infantry to take and hold SFE, Yakut, China, Sinkiang, India, and Persia by turn 6, while building 4 new fighters in the process.  On turn 7 the Japanese air force flies from Persia to Europe, and the ships have just arrived at Brazil from the Cape of Africa.  On turn 8, the successful destruction of the entire Atlantic fleet should be likely.

It doesn’t tilt the game in favor of the Axis, but it does increase their odds substantially in my opinion.  Is there a fatal flaw to this plan that I’m missing?

Sorry if this is covered in an old thread.  I’m coming back to the game after about 15 years!

    • RE: Any Classic Players Left Out There?

Before I had kids, I had friends available for face to face games, which was amazing.  Now that I’m coming back to the game after a few years, I really didn’t know where all these online options were.  So thank you for linking those stickies.  It’s REALLY nice not to need to sift through a dozen pages of old forum posts to find this  :-) I’ll probably try both the email and tripleA options.

I still don’t want to give up on finding the occasional face to face opponent, however.  I’ll bite the bullet and learn some new versions eventually, which will allow me to participate in my local meetup.  Nothing will kill my nostalgia for classic, though!  If anyone in the Seattle area come across this and wants to meet for a classic game, drop me a line: ericwool@gmail.com

Thanks for the reply.  This would actually be my first time using gamesbyemail, so let me get on there and get a feel for it.  I’ll let you know when I start a game.  Looking forward to it!

    • Any Classic Players Left Out There?

I know most active players have long since moved on to new editions, but I would love to find some new foes for classic.  Who still plays?  If you do, what general region are you located in?  I’m in the greater Seattle area.
