    • RE: Playing Allies for the 1st time?

      I am no expert but Allies generally have to be mostly reactive.  Generally speaking against a decent player it is harder to acheive victory.

      The keys for Global come down to which cities the Axis player is pushing for.  Normally in Europe this would be Cairo and the Russian cities.  If you can hold Russia, Europe is safe.  If you lose Russia you need to hold London and Cairo - Cairo being the harder city to protect.

      USA needs to assist in Europe if it is threatened, generally speaking I try to at least get USA to help in the Mediterranean (and Convoy Italy).  If you can control the Med, keeping Cairo becomes a lot easier.

      As far as the Pacific goes, the points of impact are generally India/Australia (and sometimes Hawaii).  I usually try to get USA to protect Australia/Eastern Pacific where possible and the ANZACs to build subs and try to break the line of naval supply for Japan while India tries to hold ground.

      If you can stop Japan getting Hawaii and Sydney (and ideally India) you are looking good.  Try and be disruptive as possible as the Allies because in the long run your economy will win out.

      I would like to reiterate I am not as good as a lot of the players here, so some better strategies will likely come up… just putting in my 2 cents :)

      @Young:

      Any good web or scanned picks of battle boards or roundels?

      Not sure about roundels, but I printed out 94Canuck’s battle board (http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=25530.0) for my table at roughly A4 size (I think that is Letter size in North America ??) and it looks great.  I have 2 of them either end of the board on removable platforms.  It also has the turn order in the casualty zone too, but might not serve the purpose you needed.

    • RE: War Rake???

      I think I might make a few for my table.  They seem pretty easy to make, and I will detail the process for any interested.

      I thought about having a “war shovel” or even a flat/ramp side to the rakes to help scoop/carry units from combat zones to the combat resolution area of the board.  It wouldn’t always be useful for the crowded europe territorites but if designed well could be handy.

    • RE: AA40G-2e, VS-ALPHA+3, ETC

      Basic evolution:

      1st Edition > Alpha+1 > Alpha+2 > Alpha+3 > Alpha+3.9 > 2nd Edition

      Naturally there were probably a fair few iterations between those, but that is the general direction of what went down.

      @Young:

      @Gargantua:

      I would laugh at a G1 Barbarossa.

      There’s no way they are going to win.

      Are you going to enlighten us as to why?

      I’d really like to hear the response… Only time I haven’t won using G1 Barbarossa was when I butchered my NCM G1 and G2, and even then I still got Moscow, just Italy wasn’t able to keep Cairo

    • RE: G40 Table

      @Young:

      If there were perfectly divided plastic trays available, would you buy them?

      Maybe… if the price was right and they didn’t look too “plastic” if you know what I mean.  I like the tuck inserts because it leaves pieces in the original boxes that fit nicely back in the game box for storage.  And the black cardboard boxes they come in won’t look too out of place against stained wood as opposed to the clear/white plastic that most containers are.

      If you are planning to pad the side rails of your table, do it right and hire an upholster.

      Thats a good point.  I think I am just going to sand and stain the table, If I sand down to curved edges it should be comfortable enough.  I can always upholster over the top of it in the future.  Cheaper that way too as my wife wouldn’t think its a worthwhile investment to hire an upholster  :roll:  I had to pull in a few favours to get the budget for the table up to this point!

      We tried timed turns, it doesn’t work. Every round during Germany’s turn, Russia should move their eastern forces to allow Japan and Germany to go at the same time. This will help shorten games.

      I agree with not being able to play timed turns, there is no even way to do it and it will naturally speed up once everyone is more familiar with the game.  A few of the new guys just get bored and I understand the concern like when you play Anzac and you wait an hour before having your first turn (we usually have enough so Italy & Anzac are individual players).  I agreed to put a clock on the board cause I figure its still a nice way to time the game out of interest, see how long a full round takes etc.

      @dedo:

      Great work, you put your heart and soul in it! Just one small point you could improve: in the pictures table5 and table6 there are dividers with visible cut edges (dividers between coins and dices). If you paint them, you will have another surface coverage as for the other parts of the table and with the utmost probability this will annoy you. My suggestion is to saw them in a way, that the grain is visible on top of the divider.

      I think I know what you mean, have the dividers be cut in a way so the “against the grain” cut isn’t showing on the top?  I did realise this AFTER I had scrwed in and gap sealed all the token containers  :x  I don’t know if it is worth redoing them, although those edges are going to be extra thirsty come staining time, it’s probably not enough of an eye-sore to go through the whole effort of redoing the divider….  in my opinion anyway as I won’t ever be selling the board, so people can just deal with it.  Maybe just a lesson learned for all those building their own tables!

    • RE: G40 Table

      I ended up just doing plain paper tuck inserts for now.  I bought one plastic tray but was $5 and it doesn’t really have the right size/amount of containers - I might use it for universal tokens/pieces.  I am not really up for paying $50 just for trays and the tuck inserts work well enough.

      Has anyone ever added padding to a table?  I am thinking of adding padding to the outer table edges as it was a fairly common theme in last game that the edges are too rough.  My immediate response was ‘stop being a pussy’, but I think there is merit in at least sanding the pine edge of the table.  I just had the thought of having some nice poker style padding on the edges.

      I am also building a clock (that can be used as a turn and game timer) into the table.  The turn timer won’t necessarily be strictly enforced more just so we can see which player/nation turns are slowing down the game (last game we had 6 players (3 new) and after 12 hours and we only got to turn 7 I think).  While looking into this I had another idea that I haven’t seen much of is rigging up some little dual colour LED lights to sit in the board where the capitals are, so it is easy to see the VC’s and how many Axis/Allies have.  I thought of this as in our games sometimes people forget the overall goals and get sidetracked by attacking foreign armies.  Con’s for this would be needing to drill into the original board to make a small hole, but I don’t have a huge issue with that if I don’t stuff it up.  These LED’s would be controllable via a simple switch interface on one end of the table.

      Will post some pics later in the week once I vinish sanding and staining the board, with it all set up and some of the features I have built into it.

    • RE: Strict Nuetrals

      @Young:

      @elzario:

      Mongolia is not considered a strict nuetral, correct?

      If Germany attacks Sweden, it doesn’t allow USSR to activate the Mongolian territories does it?

      Mongolia territories are strict neutrals, and if they become pro-allied due to an axis attack on any strict neutral…. than Russia would be able to walk on them and claim their standing armies.

      Well that’s good to know, I never considered them a strict nuetral.  That being said I don’t remember playing a game where one of the Allies attacked a strict nuetral

    • RE: POLL: What do you love customizing

      Tables is my thing… at the moment.

      I have a fresh set of customisations for the table after our last game, and I can see that I will be forever tweaking and improving the set-up.

      I would really like to do some painting, but until people know the pieces well enough I think it would just add a bit of confusion to my group.  I am sure I will be giving it a go in the future.

      @Young:

      @elzario:

      They split up their navy and Japan taught him a lesson as to why not too, so it seemed a little harsh after losing his pacific holdings to force him to not get income for a turn :P

      They still spent over $20 more than they should have.

      They sure did, by the numbers they gathered an extra 75 (+25 for each round they werent at war).  I wasn’t too dirty on them for it as it was only their second game and they didn’t use it at all wisely.  Universe appeared to balance itself somewhat dicing him pretty badly on J4 and resulted in losing his entire Pacific fleet with minimal losses to japan.

      I am writing an application (for mobile devices) for purchasing, NOs and income so that should iron out me having to supervise every one of the sneaky chumps that play at my table :)

      That sounds like it, although they were collecting them at Peace which they shouldn’t of been as Japan stayed peace until end of T3 to my frustration… I didn’t notice as I was training up a new player.  Didn’t change the game fortunately!

      52 is about what I thought it should be.

      I think the guy playing them yesterday was taking all the NO’s from turn one - giving him about 72 or something a turn from the get go.  All the NO’s are only when they are at war I beleive?

    • American Income

      Out of curiosity, what would be the standard income for USA on the first few turns providing Japan didn’t attack?  I have never really taken note having not played USA in a long time and realised they seem to have an incredibly healthy bank balance most of the time.

    • RE: Minor Threat's Alpha+3.9 (Global 1940) COMPLETE! Setup Charts

      Bloody awesome cards, changed the speed of our last game :)

      Just one note on the Soviet Union Card, the Mongoian-Soviet defensive pact should read (for 2nd edition):

      “If the Soviet Union attacks Korea or any Japan-controlled territory bordering these Mongolian
      territories while Mongolia is still a strict neutral, Mongolia will remain neutral and not ally itself with the Soviet Union.
      In all other respects and for all other purposes, the Mongolian territories are treated as any other strict neutral territory.”

      The card is missing the reference to Korea (the ones I have printed do anyway).  The above is copied and pasted from 2nd edition book.

      I have started this project with one of my developer buddies.  We both work a fair bit but hopefully things are as straight forward as they appear and it shouldn’t take too long.  If we end up charging anything it will be so I can get one of those shiny supporter badges under my name :)

    • RE: To block or not to block

      @Spendo02:

      Remember you can always NCM past a blocking ship if you clear it during the combat phase.  Blockers are not the be-all end-all of naval strategies.

      Providing the units that cleared the blocking ship weren’t part of the combat movement.

    • RE: IPad app for IPC tracking

      I thought of developing one, but it isn’t really complicated enough to warrant an entire application.  You could program it into a website or spreadsheet and run it from any device.

      That being said I am still not against the idea of developing it, but I would make an App that would help with purchasing and National Objectives too.

      As someone who also likes to customize their own gaming tools, I feel your pain. However, it’s only a small mistake that you will bounce back from, don’t give up your dream, just start over and you will make it right.

      Yeah no big deal really.  Probably more of an upset as it puts a kaibosh to my Russian IC upgrade tactic I had been thinking about all morning.  Makes sense why I couldn’t find any topic on it!

      Time to find some other crazy Russian scheme…
