      @knp7765:

      Yes, Ontario is adjacent to Central United States.
      I know it looks a bit confusing, but I’m pretty sure that you don’t count the Great Lakes as a water barrier like a Sea Zone. I guess we are supposed to assume that the Axis would use ferries and/or bridges to cross them.

      … and the Allies would too ?

      Don’t try it Herr KaLeun, I have a bad feeling… that even if you slip through the straight, your sub will just get bombed at harbour!

      They won’t catch us this time! Not this time!

      @Degrasse:

      I’ve started favoring a simple formula, buy four subs a turn to use for crushing Italy and the rest for Japan.  Sooner or later Italy will collapse under the submarine pressure.

      This is going into my next game as USA, although I will only be starting it when USA has wartime economy.

    • RE: Invasion of Canada

      I have only once seen North America be attacked in our group.  It wasn’t Germany though, it was Japan.

      I would like to see the chain of events that would lead this to happening and why it was necessary.

      Will all the parts that I am staining need to be flat?  Like when doing the sides am I going to have to tip the table on its side and leave it flat until it dries?

      Here is the spreadsheet I did up a while back that can do a bit of chance workups.

      Excel: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_qD08g2r8jXR19xNHpJa19VZVU/edit?usp=sharing
      Google Docs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvqD08g2r8jXdDFFZTk1TWRROWJVaHlxenhGM2prbVE&usp=sharing

      EDIT: After looking at the numbers aren’t correct.  I havent broken down formulas or anything so not sure how far out it is.  Good thing I don’t use it anymore!

      @Eggman:

      Well I think it would be preferable to just have Germany and Italy linked together just as ANZAC and Japan are.

      You mean ANZAC and UK right?

      @Kreuzfeld:

      for those of you who didn’t read the rules, they clearly state that you cannot attack a terretory controlled by, or containing units from a major power you are not at war with

      It is also pretty clear on Russia not being able to move units into any territory outside of Russia (in this case India) on the Pacific board, without being at war with Japan.  To get the fighter there you could declare war on Japan but then voiding the inability for Japan to attack it.

      @elzario:

      Gibraltar starts with an Airbase doesn’t it?

      Not in 2e, but I think it did in previous additions.  Having one at the start would obviously be a big help for the Allies.

      Maybe that’s why it rings bells.  I thought it started with one but don’t remember seeing it in the last couple of games, and it’s not on the setup chart I have.

    • RE: Stain, Varnish and Pine

      @Hepps01:

      The other thing that is important with Pine (as well as other softer woods) is the sap and moisture content.

      There is a product called “Wood Conditioner” that can be applied to woods like Pine to help make the wood take the stain more consistently.  I also know some painters that prefer to dampen the material slightly prior to staining.  Going to a good paint store and talking to them would set you in the right direction from a preparation standpoint.

      This was one aspect I think I prepared for.  Most the pine I bought was “stain-ready”.  Some of the smaller pine isn’t though cause I am a cheap so I might still get some wood conditioner if it’s not too expensive.  End of the day it looking a bit bochy won’t ruin the game so I am not too stressed about it.

      I started sanding with a rough/coarse sandpaper to smooth the edges and getting rid of any inconsistencies.  Sanding by hand sucks, I recommend a sander if you can afford one.

      Don’t know what I will do about the MDF board I have in the nation compartments… I read that it can be stained but I am not sure if I should just paint them.  If they are going to look different and out of place I might do it deliberately, maybe paint an enlarged roundel image for each nation compartment.

      Anyone had any stain experience with MDF board?

    • RE: Half price air and naval bases

      @corporal:

      my buddy has been playing as the Allies in recent games. He starts off buy purchasing one for Gibraltar and later on for Egypt. To me it seems like a good strategy because he tends to go heavy on airpower and that makes Gibraltar very hard to take. I also have put one in Romania plus a carrier to protect my transports and thats working very well. Ill be pushing towards the Middle East in a turn or two. It doesnt seem to unbalance the game aloy but we were thinking 8ipcs is a better buy.

      Gibraltar starts with an Airbase doesn’t it?

      I don’t see a downside to it unless the Jap’s start abusing it in an India push as mentioned by BJCard.

    • RE: Japan T-1 purchase

      If you can manage to pull it off it is great having an IC (or two) on the mainland.

      What this says to me though is USA isn’t spending much in the Pacific if you are able to concentrate on the Asian continent?  If you aren’t at risk of losing Japan it can certainly be a strategy to lean on Russia until it is under Axis control and hold out for the Europe win.

    • RE: Looking for some beginner guides

      My advice is ignore the “strategies” side of things.

      Start of with just little things, looking to win a battle 1-2 turns away.  Aim to restock units you plan on losing that turn, or plan a turn ahead.  I wouldn’t worry too much about long term goals really until you start getting the swing of things.

      Learning the unit abilities and possibilities is really all you need to start really grasping bigger things.  This unfortunately just takes time, 3 games down and you will be grasping a lot more but to start with its all about the micro game.  Knowing your  units and what they can do, fight battles, watch the results.  Don’t worry about winning and losing.

      Every guide I read before playing didn’t really help until I had played 3 or 4 games and most in my group agree.  Playing is the best way to learn the game.

    • RE: Could Japan destroy Russian units without a DOW?

      It wouldn’t be able to move into UK Pacific territory until a state of war in the Pacific theatre (ie with Japan).  That is as far as I understand it.  Am not sure where you would find the direct reference in the rule book.  Will have a look into it though as I have a copy at work I think…

      From page 36 of the Pacific 2nd ed. Rulebook.

      Due to its separate treaties with Germany and Japan, the Soviet Union is in a unique position in its relationship with the Axis
      powers. As a result, if the Soviet Union is at war with Axis powers on only one map, it is still under the restrictions of being
      a neutral power (see “Powers Not at War with One Another,” page 15) on the other map. In other words, a state of war with
      Japan lifts those restrictions from the Soviet Union on the Pacific map only, and a state of war with Germany and/or Italy lifts
      those restrictions on the Europe map only.

    • RE: Converting Punch to Percentage; Question for Math Geeks!

      @Spendo02:

      I know, I reached out to a statistics wizard I know and when he started getting into the calculations of it I basically said “nevermind” as it was too complicated to follow with my Business Stat 101 understanding of probability.

      Tell me about it!  Its crazy to think that something so simple in practice becomes so convoluted in execution.  I always think that estimations within probabilities are as good as accurate calculations.  Such as a 72% chance vs a 70% chance is really the same thing in practice even though in theory it can be something entirely different.

    • RE: Converting Punch to Percentage; Question for Math Geeks!

      @Spendo02:

      Be interesting if there was a “cheat sheet” for different combinations of units getting at least 1, 2 and 3 hits.

      We don’t allow the use of outside “inputs” once we start a game, but would be nice if you could commit some of the more standard combinations to memory such as 2 Inf 2 Art getting 1, 2 or 3 hits or 2 Armor and 2 Mech scoring 1, 2 or 3 hits.

      I have a spreadsheet for each to-hit value (2 or less, 3 or less etc).  It gets pretty intricate when you start mixing to-hit values.

      @Omega1759:

      … hence the use of Monte Carlo simulators.

      Anyone have a working application that gives you “to hit” chance percentages when inputting types (and amount) of units?

      I had thought of creating an app for it but why make something that already exists right?

    • Stain, Varnish and Pine

      Has anyone done any varnishing or staining of pine?  I have been doing a bit of research so as not to stuff up the look of my gaming table and have found that due to the soft nature of Pine it is hard to get an even look when staining (or varnishing).  I had planned to Stain the table but thought maybe someone here had some experience and could point out any pitfalls I should attempt to avoid.

      Any advise would be appreciated :)
