      @Capt.:

      Can someone clear this up for me?

      It’s US3 and I have JPN bearing down on me with 2AC 4FIG and 2TRN with 3INF and 1ARM.  I have no ground troops in WUS and it’s my turn to buy.  I’m thinking 1DD and 6SS, no ground forces.  His fleet/fighters would have to engage the DD, hostile seazone, in order to drop troops in WUS and my subs would be entered into the battle.  Japan has no DD, will my subs stay engaged even after my DD is taken out?  Can he sink the DD and then opt out of the sub-battle, landing his amphibious and taking WUS?

      I’m trying to visualize this, because I drop a DD will he have to fight through my subs 2AC vs 6SS in order to land?  Will I have 6@1 vs 2@1 and his loaded transports at risk?

      Interesting situation.  The attacker will have to destroy your DD for sure.  Now since he has to attack your fleet he should not be able to ignore the SS.  If some or all his planes are participating in naval combat they will only be able to sink the DD.  His aircraft carriers will be left against the SS.  Risky for him.  Chance he would withdraw if he would attack at all ( I would not attack your coast myself with those odds).

    • RE: Plastic Playing Pieces

      As promised here the colors I used.

      IC and AA: Krylon Flat White
      Germany:  Testors Model Master Spray Panzer Grey (1950)
      USSR:  Rust-Oleum Univeral Expresso Brown
      Japan:  Rust-Oleum Univeral Cardinal Red
      UK:  Testors Model Master Spray Afrika Mustard (1955)
      Italy:  Rust-Oleum Univeral Arctic Grey
      China:  Rust-Oleum Univeral Hunter Green
      USA:  Testors Model Master Spray SAC Bomber Green (1993)

      The results from the Testors is the nicest but colors are limitted in the spray can format.

      @Adlertag:

      Larry just stated that AA50 is a limited ed, it will never be printet again, so why bother.

      That would be very sad.  Do you have an official link confirming this?  This means AAR will remain probably the official tournament version.

      As for the original topic.  As said by other more experience players than me, I think more games and more time needs to pass before we change anything about the rules.  Lets adapt first and see if and what needs to be possibly changedbefore risking unbalancing the game.

      @supermestizo:

      Hi Jeff El Capitan !

      Did you prepare your pieces in someway?, washing and drying them?
      Did you just spray the color right on your pieces?, or did you prepare them with undercoat?

      Pizarro

      My sets was brand new.  I didn’t use the pieces.  I didn’t prepare the pieces in anyway.  Place and spray.  Wait for drying turn and respray.

      Hi El Capitan !

      Very nice work, your playing pieces look awsome!
      Can I ask you how you painted them, maybe I paint my own, but I want to know how to do it so I dont destroy my playing pieces.

      Thanks.

      I just set up an area with drop sheets and used spray paint cans with paint safe on plastic.  My Soviet, Japanese, Italian and Chinese were painted with paint bought at Home Depot.

      My German, British and American I used some Testors Model Master spray can enamel paint.

      As long as you use a paint safe on plastic your pieces will be fine.  You could also use an airbrush if you have one.  The longest part is laying the pieces for painting.  I sarted by painting the back and/or uderneath, let it dry then turn them to paint the front and or faceup.

      Let me know if you want the same paint colors/company.

    • RE: Plastic Playing Pieces

      While waiting for a source of high quality pieces, here is my solution.  It takes care of the color, and number of pieces (except for Italy).

      I combined my AAEurope, AAPacific with my AA50 pieces.  I gave the Soviet Inf from the AAPacific to Italy and added the USA molded Chinese Inf of AAPacific to the Chinese Inf.

      At first I only wanted to painted the Italian, Soviet, Chinese, and Japanese pieces.  I got some spray paint for plastic and went to work.  After I was done with these I didn’t like the two tone German, British and American pieces and decided to paint those also.  Here is the result:

      I am very pleased with the result.  I am still very interested in replacement of high quality.

      THis thread inspiredme to do something about the number and color of the pieces untill someone makes complete high quality replacement pieces.  I want two sets please (maybe three).

      I combined my AAE, AAP with AA50 pieces and I am in the process of painting the Chinese (dark emerald), Italien (light grey), Japanese (bright red) and Soviet (burgundy).

      The other nations have the pieces of close enough colors to leave as is.

      In 1942 if you liberate any of the Indies, Borneo, solomons, etc, do their IPC value go to the US or does it revert back to UK?

    • RE: Subs/Destroyers/Bombers and you!

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      I ran this through a simulator and if your only goal is to kill the BBs, your are better off not bringing the DDs - even if you don’t replace them with something else.  Replacing 2 dds with 2 subs (saving 4ipcs as well) makes it a significant improvement.  Just keep in mind, in the first two cases I was not looking at your own losses or net IPCs etc…  The DDs do provide you fodder to protect your more valuable units.  I was strictly looking at a 100% BB kill rate.

      Attacking force / Approx likelihood of killing all 4 BBs
      5 bom, 1 CA, 2 Sub, 2 DD / ~67%
      5 bom, 1 CA, 2 Sub, 0 DD / ~71%
      5 bom, 1 CA, 4 sub, 0 DD / ~96%

      Except the hits can be taken by defending subs as well.  If you attack a fleet of 4 BB and a 4 sub you are better off with 5 bomber and 3 fighters.  The task force will have cost you six less IPC and has a 96.6% chance of winning against 4 BB while ignoring the 4 sub.

      The probability you listed don’e acount for 4 sub present defending.  The odds for:

      5 bom, 1 CA, 4 sub, 0 DD against 4 BB and 4 sub is less then 7%.

    • RE: Subs are awesome

      @Count_Zeppelin:

      First:
      Face it, bombers, not subs are the main weapon of naval combat. They have far superiour theatre flexibility and combat range and thats it.

      Cut your losses:
      You normaly cant afford to lose your limited number of bombers in fleet actions. And thats where the sub comes into play. 2-3 subs together with 2-3 bombers are enough to wreak havoc on most fleets and with a rising number of aircraft this equation gets even better, as you can absolutely afford to lose your subs and then decide to continue the action or to retreat.

      Superiour opposing air force:
      If the opponents air is too strong, subs can repel small fleets and keep the hunt the lone transport. This tactic has been discussed before.

      I agree.  The use of subs with aircraft is a gret combo for naval combat  (even better if you have super subs).  You can even make it cheaper if you have long range aircraft and jet fighter, transforming your fighters in better weapon than the original bomber.

    • RE: Subs/Destroyers/Bombers and you!

      You are right.  Bringing destroyers makes your bomber hits possibly go against subs.  It seems counter productive but only for the first round of firing.  You can take the first round of defensive hits on your destroyers making the sub stealthy again and imune to bomber hits.

      The best fodder IMHO in this type of battle you described would be fighters to take along side of your bombers.  Defending subs couldn’t be hit by aircarft and couldn’t fire either.  Thus taking the subs out of the battle all together.

    • RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A

      @Krieghund:

      Per the FAQ, China is considered to be the original owner of Manchuria and Kiangsu.  This works in the same way that the USSR is considered to be the original owner of Belorussia in the '42 scenario, even though Germany starts the game in control of the territory.  As a result, control of Manchuria and Kiangsu works in exactly the same way as control of any “normal” Chinese territory.  Japan just happens to start out the game controlling them (as an enemy power).

      Thanks for the clarification.
