    • RE: Top 10 World War II action films of all time

      If you can ever get your hands on some classic Finnish WWII movies, I can warmly recommend the 1955 version of The Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon Sotilas) and Winter War (Talvisota) from 1989. Great action and great dialogue. Both can be found subtitled in English, though you might have to do some digging  :-D

      The Unknown Soldier tells a story of machine gun Company in a Finno-Russian Continuation War through 1941-1944. Väinö Linna, the author of the book, actually fought in the said war. The movie has a nice flow to it, and the characters become more and more lovable. Another version of the movie was made in 1985, and the newest is just making it’s way out. I wouldn’t recommend the 1985 version, especially if you haven’t watched the original first.

      The Winter War is still a bit more factual and relies mostly on the action sequences, and less on characters. The book was written basing on diaries and interviews of those who fought in the Winter War.

      Anyway, if you ever come across these movies, be sure to check them out!

    • RE: Can you save the Bismarck

      Once I saw an airbase build in Holland Belgium on G1. It did it’s job in protecting the German battleship from UK1 attack, but rest of the game it was just sitting there. Staring awkardly.

      @CWO:

      @Der:

      It’s hard to believe that powder can still be good after 70+ years!

      That’s actually part of the problem.  If I’m not mistaken, certain types of explosives can destabilize over time and become more sensitive to shock.  I think this is particularly the case with nitrocellulose explosives, whose nitroglycerin component apparently re-liquifies and seeps out of the solid matrix when it gets too old.  It’s sort of an extreme example of the concept of the “best before” date that is more ordinarily applied to packaged foods and pharmaceutical products.

      This is true. The picric acid used in hand grenades still during WWII reacts with the metal casing of the grenade to form picrate salt, which is highly unstable.

      WWII era hand grenades are problem also in Finland because of the “Weapons Cache Case”. As the Continuation War against Soviet Union was turning bad, some of the Finnish officers decided to hide large amounts of weapons and explosives all around the country in case the Soviets would occupy Finland. Those supplies were meant to be used in guerilla warfare against the occupation. Since this never happened, some of those caches still remain untouched and are discovered from time to time during house renovations, building excavations etc. The weapons are still functional and often sold on black market, and the hand grenades pose a serious threat to anyone handling them and to those nearby.

      edit: some typos

    • RE: How to handle G1 DOW against Russia?

      @Fatespinner:

      I plan to use my ships and fighters to kill the UK fleet.

      The allies players are no pros. We have played a few games and always switched sides, teams and factions. So if Russia retreats everything to Moscow then G5 would not be possible or? How much is the time difference between taking Moscow on G6 compared to waiting for the normal War declaration and then attack?

      Depends on Russian buys, unit placements and movement. I have couple of times conquered Moscow on G5, because the Russian player invested on tanks and artillery, and failed to move the Leningrad stack to defend Moscow on time.

    • RE: Table Space for Global

      I used to have two tables that I set beside each other so the Global map could just barely fit. Luckily the tables were the same height. Chairs were used to hold unit boxes and the box for dice were held also on a chair, or on the floor. Now that the other table is gone, it’s even more inconvenient and we haven’t played Global at my place since. Though I gotta say that it’s bit tricky at my friends flat too; he has a short-legged coffee table that can hold 3/4 of the board and the last part has to be placed on couple of footstools that are even on lower level. It’s a pain in the back.

      I really need my own Axis&Allies cave. Maybe one day…

    • RE: Paris Failure

      This just happened to my friend as we were playing TripleA. He had a chance of ~80% to take Paris but the dice were against him, leaving me with two tanks and a fighter. Although he did well in the Atlantic, Germany was pretty hard pressed now, as he also had declared war on Russia. I offered him to just restart the game but he refused. Italy was able to claim Paris the same round but the always brave and hard fighting French took it back with no casualties. Now here’s the fun part: on round 2 Germany failed to take Paris again. A surrender of Axis quickly followed.

      Oh well, the games are 1-5 for me this year.  :roll:

    • RE: AAA1941 Questions need answers so my son and I can resume playing!
      1. The IPC tracker only keeps track of income from territories. You do have to keep track of the balance on a paper, or with poker chips or with what ever you like.

      2. You throw one die per unit that YOU have engaged in a battle. If you manage to get a hit, your OPPONENT chooses which unit takes that hit. I’d also like to mention, that a transport can’t be declared to take a hit, it gets destroyed automatically if you manage to destroy opposing units AND have at least one unit with attack value left.

      Your example is a bit weird, since Infantry can’t fight on sea and bombers wouldn’t be able to defend on sea since it shouldn’t be there (and there is no carrier for the defending fighter, but let’s just say it was already destroyed). If we exlcude those, you would throw four dice on the first round of combat:
      -A four or less for bomber
      -A three or less for fighter (x2)
      -A one for Aircraft carrier

      Let’s say that your bomber and one of your fighters hit. Your opponent then chooses which two units are taken as casualties. They do, however, to fight back until end of this round. They are removed from the game AFTER your opponent has thrown his/her dice.

      So, your opponent would throw two dice in total:
      -A four or less for fighter
      -A two or less for destroyer

      Let’s say, that your opponents fighter manages to get a hit, YOU choose which unit is taken as a casualty. After that, both sides casualties are removed from the game. In this example your opponent doesn’t have any units with defence value left, so the transport and the infantry unit in it are destroyed. IF your opponent did have units left, attacker gets to choose if he/she retreats or pushes the attack. If attacker chooses to continue, another round of comabt with units left would occur.

      1. In this example, you would throw 1 die for fighter and your opponent would throw one die per infantry unit, three in total. Let’s say your fighter hits but your opponent misses all three, so one of the defending infantry is removed. Now the attacker chooses to retreat or to continue. If the attacker pushes on, he/she again throws one die for the fighter, and the defender throws one die per unit, two in total. And so on.

      2. During the Combat Movement Phase, you can claim undefended territories with your ground units. So yes, your infantry (or tank) unit can move there, but your fighter won’t be able to land there. This is because air units can only land on territories that were friendly at the BEGINNING of your turn.

      3. I believe this question was already answered. You can unload units from transports to hostile territories if the seazone is friendly (you destroy all of your opponents units from the seazone, or there weren’t any of them to begin with).

      Hope this helps at least a little bit. I myself started playing Axis and Allies with 1941 edition a few years back, and remember being very confused about the rules for a long time. The only way to get used to it is to just play it. Don’t get discouraged and remember to have fun!

    • RE: Aircraft carrier/ fighter question

      @Bravehart:

      When the carrier is damaged, the planes continue fighting. But they will not be able to land on the damaged carrier.

      But they have one space to land safely though don’t they? on a non damaged AC within one air space, or if that SZ battle has an island and you have ownership of, the one space can land there?

      BH

      This is correct.

      Air units based on a defending carrier must land on the
      same carrier if possible after the battle. If that carrier is
      destroyed or damaged in combat, they must try to land
      on a different friendly carrier in the same sea zone, move
      1 space to a friendly carrier or territory, or be destroyed.

    • RE: Jugoslavian Strafe

      @simon33:

      In vanilla the strafe isn’t that desirable because you want your North Italy forces to hit Sth France and usually one of the art has to get on a transport to strengthen that force. Unless you’re doing a strategy of the Germans using mobile forces to hit Sth France G1.

      My plan was to hit Normandy and Paris on G1, and left the south France for G2.

      In more words, G1 hit Uk navy in Seazones 110 and 110 (maybe a sun for 91), take Normandy and Paris, strafe Jugoslavia. Fly a Fgt to S. Italy and a Tac to Tobruk. Take S. France G2. Italy would focus on Middle East, rather than Africa, depending on UK’s actions of course.

      We are rather inexperienced players, so I think I could pull something like this off, at least this once, since neither of us have tried it before.

      PS: The game has been postponed at least a week :(

    • RE: Jugoslavian Strafe

      @ProtesT:

      I usually hit with all Inf that can reach minus 1 in Romania that I use to walk on Bulgaria. I use 2 out of the 3 tanks that can reach and I use the Fgt that flies to S.Italy on non-combat, it will stop to hit Yugo on the combat phase. Typically I get around 3-4 hits on the neutrals this way leaving 1 or 2 left for the Italians. Very seldom do I kill it in the first round of combat. Thd Art that can reach Yugo I leave behind as it will certainly kill Yugo if they are sent. This strafe is a perfect tactic if you are planning a G2 DOW on Russia. Retreat to Romania and all those surviving units are there ready for the Soviets.

      Remember, a healthy Italian income is always nice. But in the later rounds of the game, it will be Germany that needs the IPCs more then Italy. Plus, there are ways to cash in on 2 or 3 Italian NOs by the end of Italy’s 2nd turn. However you have to hope the UK player does Taranto and not Tobruk to be able to try and get 10/15 extra IPCs for Italy via their NOs.

      Right. I was thinking about sending a Fgt to Tobruk and a Tac to S. Italy to help out in Med and lure more UK resources on Taranto. What comes to German IPCs, I see this as a sort of a trade off; Italy takes Balkan, Germany gets S. France.

    • Jugoslavian Strafe

      Hello, a long time reader, first time poster here!

      I have a game coming up soon as Axis and I have plans to leave Jugoslavia (along with the rest of the Balkans) for Italy. This how ever requires a succesful G1 strafe attack. I was wondering, if it is common to try this tactic, and more importantly, what’s the “safest” way to do it so you don’t always end up capturing the damn thing with German  :-D
