    • RE: So the theory of gravity is bunk?

As a fellow scientist, I’m impressed by Jermofoot’s well reasoned and patient responses- we scientists can be arrogant at times with our proximal knowledge of the natural world.

However, Balungalof, I think much of the confusion has to do with your concept of Newtonian Gravity. Newton’s theory of gravity (it is not a law, unlike his contributions to thermodynamics) simply stated that there existed an attractive force between two masses via gravitational potential energy. And Newton was almost exactly right. However, his theory fell short of explaining exactly “what” gravity is. That’s where Einstein came in with general relativity and improved (if not completely resolved) the question of “how” gravity occurs. However, with the blossoming field of Quantum Theory growing at the same time, gravity became a sort of conundrum as it was the weakest of the fundamental forces.
-extra credit for anyone who can list them
So now we have some new theories concerning quantum gravity that start springing up around this time while Einstein’s general theory gets scrutinized.
Fast forward to the present and we’ve again confirmed General Relativity with a new gravity probe launched by NASA last year, I belive. Einstein was completely right. And we still haven’t unified physics yet (despite the best efforts of string, and later, M-theorists). Maybe someday you can take the banner of the likes of Pauli and Einstiein and try to figure out a “Theory of Everything”!

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s what makes science so special. It’s not a “religion” because we rely on physical, falsiafiable evidence which can be confirmed by repeated testing and statistical verification. The method is very beautiful, and I think it begs everyone’s respect before we start claiming that her major theories are “broken”.

    • RE: S.P.R.

I’m not trying to draw this off-topic. However, if you really enjoyed SPR, I think you’d LOVE Band of Brothers. Something like 10 1-hour episodes from HBO. It blows Private Ryan out of the water! I highly recommend the DVD set as a b-day or holiday gift. It covers Easy company of the 82 Airborne from Curahee to V-E day. It includes interviews from actual members of Easy Company. The entire series is very historically accurate and based on the true account of these heroic airborne! The drama is incredibly compelling… I can remember getting choked up a few times.

Awesome series for any big WW2 history fan or the average Joe.

    • RE: Enormous classes enormously unpleasing

I know what you mean. I go to a fairly small lib. arts school with a good pre-med reputation. So my basic chem/orgo chem/bio classes had 60 kids or so. When I started working my way through 200 and 300 level classes (orgo was a 200-level, however) in my major; the classes began to thin to 15-20 students. By the time I made it to my 400-level classes last year and this year, we have often 10 or less students in the class. This is especially nice, because you really get to know the prof. Few things really beat going out for a beer with your class and prof after discussing evolutionary sociobiology!

    • RE: Find Opponents Here!

      Hello Gentlemen (and ladies),
I’m brand new to these boards, but I’ve taken some time to look around and see how people play by forum. I’ve read through a few league games, so I’m going to be a little rusty- I should be able to keep up. I prefer revised. 9 VC’s. I think I have trip-A figured out, so I’m going to use it. I’m not particularly familiar with bids, but if you explain them a bit, I’d be happy to accomodate you. Also, I have a good amount of free time (I’m a senior in college and my major requirements are D-O-N-E!) so I’d like an active opponent (one who can update under 24 hours, preferably).

So, there you have it, I’m fresh meat!
