Yes, I understand that, but when the defending sub decides to stay and fight, the attacking sub rolls her dice. If it is a 1 or a 2, does the defending sub get a chance to fire back or is it destroyed because of the first strike?

RE: MY review
This is the second review I read where UK got heavies on UK1….
I would like to see a few games with no tech but with NO’s. And see how that turns out it if the allies go all out KGF. Tech is better than in the old games, but still it is very hard to judge playbalance if tech can swing the balance either way.
Still, keep up the reviews it’s a nice read! :-) Especially since we are still waiting our copy over here… :x

RE: MY review
IL, it seems that the big problem in your games was that Germany took over Russia too easily and too quickly by buying only tanks in the first 3 (?) turns. Is that right?
If so, I wonder how you defended France + Berlin itself from invading British fleet and starting from turn 2 invading USA fleet… The Italians can clean up a bit, I know, but they can’t clean 4 loads of UK trannies + 2 loads of USA trannies from France…

RE: How do subs work?
Does that mean the attacking sub doesn’t have the first strike capability when attacking defending subs?

RE: IC in india?
If Japan does not want an Indian IC, she can play her J1 so she will always be able to take the Indian IC on J2. Just look at the opening move Imperious Leader posted.
Of course there are downsides to opening like that, but having India at J2 seems pretty yummy to me.

RE: How do subs work?
Sure you can ignore the sub that ain’t the issue, but ignoring the sub the AND attacking the transport is different.
Personally I think the new navy rules add a bit more flavour to the sea battles which were pretty much totally absent in AAR.
-
RE: How do subs work?
I don’t think you can opt to ignore one unit and attack the other. It’s either attack all or none.
Attacking and defending subs can submerge before any dice are rolled, provided there are no destroyers present.
The UK sub has a chance of hitting provided he didn’t chose to submerge earlier plus the Japanese sub has to miss her first strike roll as well.

RE: AA50/41 Japanese strategy
That’s more like IL. :-D
I only think that I would take East Indies instead of Borneo to have a bit more options vs Africa. And I would be building 2 trns and 1 inf instead of the ftr.

RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A
Is it possible to have all the rule clarifications in one post on top of this thread? Only the correct ones of course.

RE: AA50/41 Japanese strategy
IL, if you open like that in Hawaii you are gambling like hell….
The attack on the Hawaii BB is likely to cost Japan her DD on average. That would leave the Hawai SZ with 2 CV + 4 ftrs provided the ftr survives the west coast attack, so you have either 16 or 20 pipes with 5 or 6 units.
The USA has 3 ftrs, 2 bmbs, 1 DD, 1 CV (or worse 2 DD’s). That’s 20 pipes or 22 pipes with 7 or 8 units.
No matter what happens on the west coast, the USA will always attack these odds. Even at 20 vs 20 with 6 vs 7 units. And what is there to gain for the Japanese? If the USA starts a Pacific war maybe a little bit, but if USA goes KGF Japan is short on capital ships + ftrs…
Personally I like your opening move you posted months back vs India much much more.
Edit: IL, CV’s defend at a 2 now, don’t forget that.

RE: Paratroopers
well germany could just buy those 5 bombers AFTER it developed paratroopers (in the same turn though… since techs now come into effect immediatly).
UK, US, jap and germany baught 2 of those research tokens and just rolled each round. thats pretty cheap and you get one tech every 3 rounds (in average)i know its very unlikely for most capitols, but for london its a pretty high risk. i will for sure keep it in mind from now on at least…and i think you will too, after you suddenly see german paratroopers in london while the UK player already warms up the dice for his r&d tokens :p
Sure but you can’t use those newly bought bombers until the next round. And by that time unless the UK player fell asleep he should defend London from those para’s. It’s no longer a surprise.
-
RE: Paratroopers
With all due respect, Germany having 5 bombers is not something one would see in every game.
It’s more likely Japan in the end game gets it and lands her bombers in Berlin, but then , you don’t have any infantry to load…
In another example you state that Germany has long range and then Japan has Panama or Western Canada… hmmm, another situation which won’t happen that often.
As for taking Russia, don’t forget that the bombers have to stop in the first hostile territory they enter, so as long as there is no clear path to Moscow, the Kremlin is safe from Paratroopers.
All in all, do not overrate para’s that much. (besides, tech is random, so it’s not something you can take into account with, same as getting Heavies just before a major Pacific fleet battle…)

RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A
That is what I used to think as well, but since IL posted something drastically different above I wonder what the rulebook literally says (if said anything at all).
-
RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A
Since over here in Holland we are still awaiting our pre-ordered copy we can’t check for ourselves in the rule book, but there is something I don’t understand:
@Imperious:
The US fighter that starts in China can never be rebuilt or placed. NO other units can enter China, but can enter Manchuria, Kiangsu, or Kwangtung. So the Soviets can capture Manchuria and UK or USA can place air units or whatever in that space.
However, Craig a Yope posted a few pics weeks back and this is a part from that discussion:
What the bloody hell is that US bomber doing in China. grin
It just got done bombing the Manchurian IC.
This seems to contradict the thing IL wrote here above.
So the question is: Can allied units (land or air) enter the Chinese territories or not? Or can they only enter Manch, Kiangsu and Kwangtung?

RE: Definitive List of Components
I don’t believe the playtesters have any influence on the no. of pieces they put in the box.
IMHO, they finally did listen a bit because there are way more infantry and armor pieces for each country than before. Why they only included 8 armor for Japan is beyond me, but that has to do with the fact that the guy who makes the calls about the no. of pieces is not an A&A player but a business man.
And of course the amount of Russian navy is ridiculous compared to Italian, so we’ll probably end up using Russian pieces for the Italian navy if needed. :-P

RE: Anybody interested in developing a 1940 or 1943 set up?
Shoot
That’s the error we were getting as well, but in order to chop the map into let’s say 28 identical pieces we need exact measurement on pixels. We were hoping to use your map as our final play map of our little group.

RE: It arrived!
Man, this is crazy. They don’t get 1 more trannie. They get 2 :-o and loaded with 3 inf, 1 art! :-o
No, I’ll not play 1941 without massive bids for China and UK. Even as Japan, I want an enemy at least near to sparring level. This is not a sparring, this is a dead corpse
Funcioneta I think everyone on this board knows by now that you think the axis can’t be beat in the 41 scenario. You are overdoing it a little bit m8.
As far as I know, there is only one extra tranny that we didn’t know off and that one holds 2 inf.True Japan becomes a monster in a KGF strategy, but how bad is that? You keep on claiming Japan will take Ottawa and Los Angeles, but do you have any clue how hard it is for the Japanese to get a foothold on the US mainland, when the USA player knows what he is doing with the 45 IPC each turn? I mean, that’s a whopping 15 inf each turn!. And if the US player moves it the right way, she can even shuck those inf to Europe and reinforce her own mainland with the newly build infantry. If I were Japan with 60+ income, I wouldn’t bother for the US mainland, my objective would be Russia.

RE: Anybody interested in developing a 1940 or 1943 set up?
IL, is it possible for you to change the file format from PDF to a bmp of jpeg format?
That would we could chop the map into smaller pieces to make a huge laminated map from it. :-D
-
RE: It arrived!
Yes, I am wondering about that too.
Of course from plain text it could be that we are missing an inf here and there, but as Craig wrote there is some stuff missing on the BGG setup that does change the game….
