Welcome to the 2023 Axis & Allies .org support drive.

Several costs for running this site have gone up in 2022. For instance hosting went up and now we have to pay for our Gmail (Google for Work) account, which used to be free for over a decade. Traffic is down so ads are down; 2 sponsors stopped paying; and we collected 60% of normal from the support drive.

As a result for the first time in over a decade the price for patrons is going up and we’re no longer offering a discount for renewing. However, we also have new perks this year:

• Gold: signature, no ads (except sponsors), badge
• Silver: no ads (except sponsors), badge
• Bronze: badge

This support drive will end on December 31, 2023 and the next one will begin in 2024.

Amount raised: $1860 ($2622.50 in 2019)
Number of 2023 unique patrons: 39 (52 in 2022, 90 in 2016)

These funds will go towards the following:

• Server hosting

Hasbro never reached out, no surprise but Renegade also did not reach out. They’re building an new A&A website. Hmm. Hopefully we survive this.

@the-captain That use account it me testing things. No need to worry. The spam posts are usually long, may or may no have links, irrelevant, and somewhat nonsensical.

Also don’t forget to :heart: new posts from new users.

I’ve turned on the post queue for messages posted by folks with reputation 0 and it’s already caught a lot. However, approving all of the legitimate users in a timely manner is problematic so this category “Welcome” is the only one that does not require post moderation, meaning spam will occasionally pop-up here.

Please help us by reporting the spam in this category. Thanks!

It’s about $100 to enable Akismet for spam filtering.

I really wish NodeBB has some basic features like posting limits for new users/IP addresses. No posting links until a certain reputation and so on.

I’ll see what I get after the upgrade but it looks like there may not be any other option except Akismet.

I’m confused. Did it work or not?

Also, are folks reporting the spam because I’m not getting any notifications about it.

I enabled Stop Forum Spam. We’ll see how well it works.

I’ll start by updating the forum software this weekend. I don’t think that will do it but it’s a start.

One option, which I would not like, is to require a reputation of 1 in order to post something. Then only allowing new folks to post in the “introduce yourself” thread.
