      Now that I have AAP40 and AAE40, I want to spread the joy of Axis and Allies with my brother and his friends.  The problem is that I have all my pieces from several games in a set of Plano boxes (cheap tackle boxes).  To reconstitute the original AAP game, how many pieces of each player do I need to send?

      This is what I guessed …

      Japanese
      16 inf, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 zeros, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 10 DD, 8 SS, 10 Trn

      United States
      16 inf, 12 marines, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 P-38s, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 10 DD, 8 SS, 8 Trn

      United Kingdom
      16 Inf, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 Spitfires, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 8 DD, 8 SS, 8 Trn

      Chinese
      12 Inf

      Please let me know ASAP if I really missed something.  I’d hate to give him too few but I have painted many pieces and I don’t want to give thiose away.  Thanks.

      In the original game, it was thought (by players I spoke with and myself anyway) that a carrier unit represented a carrier, a couple escort carriers, a few destroyers and a cruiser or two.  A battleship represented the same, but with the battleship replacing the carrier in the line up.  Submarines represented 3 submarines and transports represented 3 troop-ships.  or whatever.  Infantry represented mechanized units (Jeeps, Halftracks) and Artillery.

      After years and years of play, with the board growing more and more complex and with the prices of things changing with the addition of other things, my assumptions at least, have changed.

      Carrier = Carrier, 2 Escort Carriers
      Battleship = Battleship
      Destroyer = 3 Destroyers
      Submarine = 5 Submarines
      Cruiser = 2 Cruisers

      Infantry = 1 Battalion or Company
      Artillery = 1 Artillery Company
      Mechanized = Crap on the field (jeeps, Halftracks, Meat Wagons, whatever the trash is the Infantry is using that they might be able to strap a gun too.)

      Fighter - Fighter Squadron down from Fighter Wing
      Tactical Bomber - Some unknown fighter type, in squadron form
      Bomber - Bomber Wing

      As for the Carrier having no defense, I still claim they should have AA ability on Round 1, before combat starts.  Give them no defense or attack value otherwise is fine with me.

      It wouldn’t add any more territories that aren’t already accessible from zone 97, and it would put all of Italy in double jeopardy.

      It would be great if some people would play the Europe game with the Alpha setup and report their results at Larry’s site.  Just replace the two ANZAC infantry in Egypt with one UK infantry and ignore any references to Pacific territories in US NOs, and you should be good to go.

      Tanks are definitely not as good of a buy as they used to be. I think 2 infantry is a much better buy.

      @dinosaur:

      May the US Destroyer @ Philippines move to SZ 35-45-55-54 on turn 1 when ANZAC ships start in 54?

      Yes.

      @dinosaur:

      May this same Destroyer @ Queensland move SZ 54-49-30-26 on turn 2?

      No.

      @dinosaur:

      Does anything change if UK/ANZAC goes to war with Japan but not the US?

      No.

      @dinosaur:

      The question is really moot because this same Destroyer can move SZ 35-45-46-49 in turn 1 and then make it to Hawaii on turn 2 in two steps.  The details are only an illustration so I can verify that ports are inactive for “future allies” (e.g. nations that will later fight on the same team) but ships may occupy the same sea zone before open hostilities begin.  Thanks.

      All true.

      The final installment for this series of photos are here.

      The (unpainted) dark green US infantry come from the original A&A Pacific set and the red infantry are the Chinese soldiers from that game.  The yellow fellow is from my son’s toy soldiers I intend to use to replace the red Chinese.  and the running soldier is from my son’s toys and I was going to make a complete set to replace the US Marines from the original Pacific game.

      It really improves the game playing experience and my son loves his custom set.  Give it a try.

      I thought some folks would throw more specific comments in about the benefit in relation to cost for the units.  For example, in a slug-fest between two opposing factories, I think Artillery combined with about two Infantry each will make a good tough core force.  I would expect to see a group of armor mingled with the core fighting groups, and a group of TAC bombers to match.  At 7 IPCs, a pair of Infantry/Artillery deliver a good punch.  It would be nice to have a couple extra infantry to absorb defense blows to protect those artillery, so I figure 2 Inf per Arty is a good starting point.

      In the earliest stages of the game, mech infantry and armor buys may be key to get some support onto the front lines when there is a piece of key terrain you want to get early.  After that, unless your supply lines get too long, I suspect to see few mech infantry buys and only a few armor buys to match TAC bombers.

      Surprisingly, I expect to see Japan build a factory in Manchuria, followed buy many mech infantry and armor buys to chase Russia and pick up some IPCs from their wide open spaces.  I also expect this to change the way the war is fought in China, but that is another subject.

      I hope to have the time to publish a numeric analysis of the units here.  I would hope folks would respect that the analysis is strictly an academic what-if and not a defenitive “buy strategy.”  It should guide some folks to keep them from getting too far off the reservation though.

      I agree with a J3 attack at this point. And yes, I also believe that there will likely be no ‘Pearl Harbor’ attack on the US.

      The Carolines are an ideal spot to stage the IJN. I like to have the bulk of the fleet there and another group off the coast of China to support that efforts against the Brit holdings in the DEI and Kwangtung. Also, staging at Truk pretty much cuts the US off from doing anything useful to help the Brits for the first few turns as well as threatens the Aussies enough to force them to build ground troops for defense.

      Given that the US will have spent only 39 or so IPCs by the time of the Japanese DoW it’s impossible for them to have anything to withstand the full weight of the IJN at Truk. That means that if they want to survive the will likely have to be back at the West Coast or someplace else out of the way. That adds another turn or so to the timeline before the US can intervene effectively to help relieve pressure in China/India.

      I certainly agree on the big gambles part. One of the fun things about this game is you can sort of just PLAY. That big series of gambles sort of takes the ‘pressure’ off. Just go for it.

      I figure any time I can roll more dice than the other guy with a good number of escorts is as good as it gets.

      Equal his planes with your fighters and you’re about as ahead as you can hope.

      That’s workable. Anything would be better then 1 DD see’s everything right out of the box. You could even house rule something like that into AA50, just make it part of the radar tech. 1 for 1 until you get advanced radar(tech) then 1 DD see’s all subs. Its even kinda how the radar tech works. You fire AA guns @ 1 until you develop radar giving your AA guns a kill @ 2. Early in the game subs could easily out number DD’s, but you would still get limited detection. I might have to try this next game.

      This would also work when air units & DD attack subs. Matched up 1 for 1. Excess subs would be allowed to submerge, unless the power w/DD & air units also has radar. At that point subs could not submerge til the DD is destroyed, just how it is now

      Come on give subs more bite! :evil:

      Guys,

      I don’t know how many folks here scan all the boards, but there is a fellow that formed a company called Field Marshall Games, FMG for short.  He is making accessories for A&A and is about to release new pieces for the A&A games.  The first release will be a complete set of Italian pieces.  The other nations will follow and I think this is going to be a great thing.  If you have time, check out this thread.

      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=13894.0

      It is already over 35 pages, so it will take a long time to read.  But the essence is he is about to take the next step and take pre-orders for the Italian pieces.  I bought a set of special dice from FMG and I am happy with them.  He is also selling a dice tower.  He plans to add other stuff.  I hope he gets plenty of support so he can fund the development of all his projects.  Take a look.  The set will include some new pieces which may help with your house rules.

      I would highly recommend the FMG dice tower. It is a high quality tower that features solid wood construction and felt overlays to protect your dice. An excellent value for the money. This is probably the single best gaming item I have ever purchased!

      Here is the link for it: http://www.fieldmarshalgames.com/field-marshal-games-accesories/field-marshal-custom-dice-tower

      Let’s help keep this guy in business.

      For the record, I am not affiliated with Field Marshal Games in any way. I am just a satisfied customer.
