That is really good looking work. I just paint my buildings in the national color, use aluminum for the “glass” and black for the smoke stacks. Sometimes I will add a star or a Japanese red dot as an extra. I would never have the courage to paint the flags (and then photograph them!!). Painting the infantry is the toughest for me because they take several colors. Uniform color - Brown for boots and rifle - Tan for the face and hands - Aluminum for the bayonette - sometimes a dot on the helmet. I really love the look of the painted ships best. Usually the deck is one color, the hull is Navy Grey and the superstructure is aluminum. Sometimes I do something else. The US superstructures are also Navy grey and not aluminum, for example. Tanks and artillery are easy.

I guess the same way they can walk from Honolulu to the Big Island.

RE: Most decisive battle of the Second World Warposted in World War II History
Midway was the most decisive battle of WWII.
I could understand if someone said that the Russian Campaign (The Eastern Front) was the most decisive campaign, but Midway was the most decisive battle.

RE: Printing costs and model paints.posted in General Discussion
I also prefer not to use chips for naval units if I can avoid it. You need every aircraft carrier, Battle ship and transport on the map to keep track of damage and “carried” units. That leaves subs, destroyers and cruisers which can be “chipped.” I’d rather not do that.
Back to the subject, I thought you could get a large board printed for less. Which version are you printing? The new AAG40?
Painting one could be a lot of fun but possibly very expensive because model paint doesn’t go very far. I could see a neat project though if you could get a projector to project the image you want and then “mask off” the oceans and continents; spray painting them to give you the big picture coverage, and then brush paint in the detail you want. You could make a very nice custom board but it could cost a lot of money.

RE: Magnetsposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I paint my pieces. If you don’t, try looking for photos of painted pieces and see what you think. It really makes my visitors say, “Wow!”
Because I paint the pieces, I don’t want a big bulging magnet underneath. I have been thinking of cutting a refrig magnet into a thin strip and glueing it under the carriers in the hollow. Then I would trip some pins and glue them along the fuselage of the planes and paint them the same color. Has nayone done this by placing the magnets on the ship and the metal on the planes?

Also, in a close game, a sub hit can give you the point you need to win. If the American player plays his first properly, I see this as the most tenuous A&A game ever made. Both sides can win and one bad move could change everything. One other interesting aspect of the game is that both sides roll several dice in a typical engagement. This keeps large swings due to dice luck from happening with any frequency just because the statistics are more reliable with lots of dice in play.

Love all the pics.
When do we get self-propelled artillery as well
That’s really pretty lame. Can’t you just move them yourself? Where in the heck is he gonna find tiny little motors like that?

Some TT will need to be absorbed into others since they are so small. I understand wanting to represent every significant country in Europe but it just isn’t realistic when you may need to stack a pile of troops there.
Alaska needs to be fixed in both size and proximity to Asia.

RE: Painting 1942 editionposted in Axis & Allies Spring 1942 Edition
I have painted a lot of my pieces but I am still not even close to half. I think I have about fifteen painted Jap infantry, about six of every type of ship including the cruisers, three tanks and artillery, twenty fighters and six bombers. The Americans are about as far along except they have even more painted tanks and artillery. I have a similar number of british troops painted except fewer infantry. My Brits are painted in two colors; a tropical and a temperate uniform. I have only a dozen russian infantry painted, six tanks, six artillery and two fighters, and one sub. The Germans are about like the British troops. I have also painted a handful of the Aussies from Pac40. The fighters and bombers are getting a striped camo look. I can only say once you get started you won’t want to stop. They look great.

Ronald Reagan was a military commander, right? I choose Reagan!

It is a tough call because they played in different eras.
Now we have a 17 week season and we throw the ball more than we ever did before 1990.

RE: Best U.S Armyposted in World War II History
I agree that Lee did a fantastic job with his resources, but I can’t say his Army was better. It is just that his oponents army was so poorly led.
I guess you have to have been in the army around 1990s to appreciate what a phenomenal crush Schwartzkopf gave the Iraqis. On their turf, with a fantastic number of political constraints, he whacked the Iraqis so bad that General Powell felt he had to call an end to it (in the first quarter, instead of letting Schwartzkopf have a whole game).

RE: Is A&A pacific or A&A pacific 1940 better?posted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I like Pac 40 better. There are more sea zones and a few more playing pieces making it more interesting. I like the way submarines may be used to diminish IPCs and I also like the way sub-stalling has been eliminated in favor of destroyer stalling. The rules for scrambling air units are good. China is much more dynamic. It is hard for me to come up with a reason to prefer the original game.

I played Civ I, III and IV. I will be playing V when it hits the shelves.
Civ is one of the most immersive games there are. I can sit down to play Civ, get called to dinner and say, “Just gotta finish this turn.” The next thing I know it is almost midnight and I still haven’t had my dinner.

Yup, a good ol’ sweat tea is the thing.
Coke from the classic tornado bottle is the best cola. I used to drink the 16oz, but I’ve slowed down 'cause of the calories. If you’re out in the sun, them sticky drinks made from syrup just don’t qwench my thirst.

The biggest problem I see for a Race to Berlin is that the German player gets to decide who he wants to let win.

RE: Why do people compare Napoleon to Hitler?posted in World War II History
Both of these fellows rose to power to become sole rulers. Both led their nations in multi-national military conquest campaigns. And the several other reasons given above. For my part, it is actually more dificult to define where they were different without getting silly about their accents or the colors of their uniforms.
Regarding the war from 1945 to 1991, thank goodness the West won that war.
