    • RE: Modifying FMG's Italian Battleship

      Jim,

You did a great job on this.

FWIW, I paint my pieces too.  I paint the hull of all my ships (except the subs) Navy Grey and the decks and superstructure the “nation” color.  This makes a very nice effect.

I have not painted the Italians of my AAE40 set yet, but my nation colors are …
US - wood decks w/ navy grey superstructures
UK - Armor sand decks w/ aluminum superstructures
ANZAC - Forest green decks /w grey superstructures
Russia - who cares - Light brown
Japan - leave the decks orange after painting the hull navy grey and paint the superstructure aluminum
Germany - Paint the hull navy grey, leave the decks alone and paint the superstructures aluminum

I’m sure there are folks that have ideas for better nation colors or more imagination for the superstructures than aluminum, but something along these lines does add to the effect of painted ships.

I also paint my other pieces but the color scheme does not exactly match the ships.  For Jaoan, I use IJN green, IJA green and Sand as colors for units.  My Russians get a light brown.  My US units are olive w/ other colors like brown boots and weapons.  My UK units are armor sand and Aussies are forest green; both w/ brown weapons and boots.

      Enjoyed it. Good Luck.

    • Need a unit count for this version of AAP

Now that I have AAP40 and AAE40, I want to spread the joy of Axis and Allies with my brother and his friends.  The problem is that I have all my pieces from several games in a set of Plano boxes (cheap tackle boxes).  To reconstitute the original AAP game, how many pieces of each player do I need to send?

This is what I guessed …

      Japanese
      16 inf, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 zeros, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 10 DD, 8 SS, 10 Trn

      United States
      16 inf, 12 marines, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 P-38s, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 10 DD, 8 SS, 8 Trn

      United Kingdom
      16 Inf, 8 artillery, 8 tanks, 12 Spitfires, 6 bombers
      6 CV, 6 BB, 8 DD, 8 SS, 8 Trn

      Chinese
      12 Inf

Please let me know ASAP if I really missed something.  I’d hate to give him too few but I have painted many pieces and I don’t want to give thiose away.  Thanks.

Yes, they made an exception for Japan although you never “Build” an IC there.  Also they made the funny rule about only scrambling planes from an island, and Japan is able to defend herself while New Guniea (I think?) is split into two TT.  There are a few contrivances on the map like that.

    • RE: Albert Speer

Speer will answer to the Lord for his role in the whole thing.

If he didn’t know anything at his level of access, I couldn’t think it was less than criminal negligence.  I suspect he knew more which makes it depraved indifference and worse (willful & criminal negligence).  You just can’t go with the “I was following orders” stuff.

I voted for the Gulf War, in part because while I expected to go I did not expect to be as one-sided as it turned out.  Praise to George Bush (the first) and General Swartzkopf <sp?>fer getting it done before the politicians could mess another one up.

I also voted for the six day way cause that was a mess that really turned around.  It also helped us recognize that tanks needed another look.</sp?>

    • RE: Any good American Civil War games out there?

No one has heard of AGEod’s American Civil War computer game?

My son just purchased it for $10 with Christmas Money.  He thought it would be an action game but it is not.  It is very detailed though and I’m still trying to figure out how to play it.

    • RE: Painted Guadalcanal

You did a great job.  I was especially impressed with some of the details like the American Stars on the decks of the Carriers and the off color highlights on the plane wings.  I am painting my own pieces for G40, but I am not tackling anything like the degree of detail you are after.

    • RE: Painted playing pieces

Those pieces are much more elaborate than the ones I painted.  I also recognized that at this scale, historical accuracy is just not a priority.  Also for me I wanted them to use the idea, “This color goes to this nation” sort of approach.  My most elaborate ones are for the Japanese.  Back when I was playing Revised, I also wanted two colors of UK troops because of the temperate and tropical environments.  I may have painted Marines for the US in the Pacific if I had stuck with it long enough.

For the Japanese, I used three colors for “bodies”, sand, IJN Green and IJA Green.  I added a lot of meatballs and silver for glass on the fighters.  I also painted the lower hull of all ships with Battleship Grey.

The UK were painted either a regular green or a color called Armor Sand for tropical uniforms.

The decks of US warships were painted “wood” and the superstructures were painted battleship grey.

Russian Pieces were colored a pale brown.  German pieces were colored European Grey.  Chinese pieces were going to be a dark brown.

Now I have a new challange to find colors for French, Italian and Aussie pieces.

    • RE: Italy's role?

In my curent game, the UK attacked the Italian BB, CA and Trn fleet losing a Tac Bomber and one hit on the UK carrier, letting the fighter from Alexandria land on the island in the UK Med.  This move put a serious hurt on the Italians.  They were faced with three bad problems.  The French fleet would have to be ignored during Italy-1.  The Italians could move 2 inf with their other transport to Trans-Jordan to close the Med via the Suez, but then this would doom the transport.  Or the Italians could attack the UK fleet of 1 damaged CV, CA and DD with 1 CA, 1 DD & 2 figs.  I opted for this attack and brought the tranny hoping it would be able to survive after the UK-2 turn.  The UK got a hit and I killed the UK fleet.  France came over with their CA and DD and finished the job so the Italians have no fleet in the Med at all at the end of turn 1.  It will be a miracle if the Italians make anything happen before the US runs into and all over Africa.

The UK-1 attack of the Italian fleet looks so strong I can’t imagine it not being done.  Can the UK not build enough infantry to prevent any possible Sealion so they will always be able to execute the Med attack on the Italian Navy?

    • Carrier Group not having an attack value?

As long as I have been playing A&A I have had to remember the ship pieces do not represent a single ship, or even a single ship type.  They represent a small group of ships represented by the largest class in the group; CV, BB, CA, whatever.  Originally there were Battleships, Carriers and Subs.  Then Destroyers were added.  Now Cruisers have been added.  I have no problem with that.  The game is more interesting and fun.  But since the Aircraft Carrier piece represents a Carrier Group, it seems it should still have an attack value, even if it is only 1.  Are there many others that think this should be Officially changed?

    • Med convoy zone question

It seems to me the sea zone in the med, #95, should be a convoy zone too.  Does anyone know why this was not designated a convoy zone?

    • RE: A little confused with Carriers

I don’t think you have it quite correct.

In the circumstance you describe, taking a hit on the carrier would result in the aircraft being unable to land on the carrier.  Therefore the damaged carrier would not have aircraft on board.

The circumstance I would expect to see aircraft stranded on a carrier, since they could not take off, is when allied planes are being transported on a carrier.  These planes would not take off to defend the carrier according to the rules, but since they do not have to “land” they could be on a carrier when it is damaged.

    • Alpha for AAE40?

      Greetings again.

I have been looking for updates for the AAE40 game rules and stuff.  I have found Larry’s stuff on an Alpha +1 update to the rules for AAG40, but I can not find it specifically for AAE40.  Does such a thing exist?  How about AAP40?  Has an Alpha, Beta or any official adjustments been announced for that?

Great game that will be better when I paint my pieces, when my pieces arrive from FMG, and when I paint them too.

    • RE: German Subs

I believe a US declaration of war against one Axis power means the US is at war with all.  The answer to the questions appears to be, yes, the US may lose income they can’t avoid, for one turn anyway.

    • RE: Two basic questions: game length and balance

With dedicated players that have an idea what they want to do for the first two turns, you might get one side to resign in four hours, but it could take much longer.  It will also take longer to play your first games while you figure out what you want to accomplish in the first three or four turns.

As for balance, I haven’t played that many games yet, but it appears the Allies have the upper hand.  Assuming UK doesn’t fall, the Germans are not likely to finish the Russians before the UK and US have whalloped the Italians, regaining Cairo and Rome.

Seven Cities is too easy for Axis and eight is too many.

    • US activating Brazil …

I just want to make sure I got this right.

The US is not permitted to “activate” Brazil by landing an infantryman there before turn 4, right?  There is a rule that says you can not move a US ship within an ocean zone next to Europe or Africa, but it doesn’t say they can’t move down by Brazil.  I just figured they can’t act as an Allied country, activating neytrals, until they are officially at war, right?

FWIW, this is an awesome game.  I think I will enjoy this much more than AAP40.  AAG40 is going to be really long though.  I hope I can find enough folks to play.

    • RE: Big problem

Can you break off a couple infantry and artillery to capture all the other Russian territory?  Then he has to come out and fight.  If you have Leningrad and Stalingrad you’re doing pretty good.  If you get enough of his territory you may be able to keep him bottled up for quite a small investment.

    • RE: Operation Barbarossa, What turn?

It seems to me the later the better, but I’m just getting started and hope to suspend my first game (rec’d Christmas) tomorrow and begin my second.  I made a couple bad errors in the first game as Axis.

      My reasoning is this …

Germany gets 5 IPC for the Peace
Russia loses 5 IPC for not being at War
Russia loses the two extra infantry they receice each turn after they are at war
Yes, Germany gets a 2 IPC swing for each territory point they capture, but Germany needs about eight of these to break even.

Like I said though, I am going to need time to look it over some more to consider more strategic needs.  I can’t see the attack before G3 though.  Turn one Germany strolls down the Chans de Lise.  Turn G2 they hot foot it over to Germany to put them in range of the Eastern Front.  G3 is the first time those Armor and Mech units can bring the pain.  I expect almost all games to start out that way unless someone wants to try Sea Lion.
