    • RE: Painted Naval Ships color?

I painted most of my ships Navy Grey on the hull and some other color on the deck.  I painted a red dot on the IJN carriers and battleships.  As a matter of fact, I didn’t have to paint the decks of the IJN.  I just left them orange.  I know this sounds strange, but once you paint the hull, the deck looks darker, and the orange almost passes for a brown.  I paintedthe decks of my US ships “wood”, the decks of my UK ships “Armor Sand” (the same color I used for tropical british forces), and the decks of the German ships a light grey.  I didn’t have to paint the hulls of the Germans because they were already close enough to Navy Grey.  I did paint the superstructure of the ships a dark color, or silver, depending on who they were.  I know some folks will say these colors are not accurate enough, but they are good enough for me and painted figures really make the game feel better.  Any A&A player that visits to play will leave with drool all over their shirt.

Once you paint the ships, you will want to paint the planes.  You will need aluminum or silver for the “canopy glass”.  I painted the UK fighters either a temperate green or the armor sand color.  The US stuff was OD green.  The germans were painted in a medium grey (a little lighter than the mold plastic).  The Jap planes were painted “sand”.  The Rus planes were painted with a medium to pale brown.

Then you will want to paint the ground units.  Have fun.  I’ve only painted about 3/4 of my original Revised set of pieces, and a few extra pieces from my AAG game.

    • RE: Rapid Deploy?

      I’ve never done it.

I can only see one situation when I might want to consider it.  Buy a carrier with two fighters (or use two of the starting fighters the US gets on their base) and pay one supply token to get that carrier onto the main map at the earliest moment.  I can’t see paying $2 to get anything else into the game early.  But getting $7 + $3 + $3 worth of stuff into the game quickly might be worth a look.  It could save a task force that just invaded New Georgia and took heavy losses in sea zone “I” but the ground units did OK.  Those extra two aircraft might make a big difference next turn if you need the ships to provide fire support to defend the counter attack next turn.

I may just have to look at that.  Turn 1 US takes Guadalcanal, Malaita and Santa Isabel.  Turn 2 US invades New Georgia from sea zone “I” pulling forces from Santa Isabel and Guadalcanal and resupplies Santa Isabel with stuff from Malaita if Japan doesn’t “counter invade” heavy in Santa Isabel from Choiseul.  If somehow the US ships lost many escorts in sea zone “I”, a rapid deployed carrier in “I” or “J” might keep the US navy afloat.

    • RE: How could we use GC Battle box approach to play Pacific?

      One more thing …

The opening turn would be a single round attack by the Japanese with a 5 damaging ships and a 4 or less killing a ship; and air and ground units are killed on a four or less.  The Allies damage a ship on a 2 and kill a ship on a 1.  Air and ground units are killed on a 1.

This is my starting thought on a first turn Japanese advantage.

Lets see if that can survive some play testing.

    • RE: How could we use GC Battle box approach to play Pacific?

I also like the three phase combat system and I want that in this new variant of AAP.  However, I would like to propose we look at the game changes that are needed from the opposite view.

In Guadalcanal each ship represents about one ship (I think the cruisers represent about two ships, and the destroyers and transports represent three or four ships, in my opinion).  In AAP, a carrier represents a carrier or two, along with a couple escorts.  A battleship represents one or two battleships and some escorts.  A destroyer represents a couple cruisers and several more destroyers.  This is the scale problem with the game.  The cost for the ships doesn’t scale very well when you compare the games.

My solution is to change the number of starting units (increasing the number in Pacific) but lowering the cost for new units (to something very close to the AAG costs).  Once a play balance is found for this relationship, then we have to redefine the IPC value of some territory.

Another problem will be that tanks are not on the battle box and artillery has a different meaning in AAP.  In AAG artillery can fire at ships but do not “help” infantry.  We need to find a solution to ground combat to make this work.  Maybe we just give tanks a cost of $3 (in AAG economy numbers) and a ground attack of three dice (no ship or air attack value), with one infantry slot on the battlebox renamed for tanks.  We may have to introduce two other compromises for this too.  Transports can ttransport one infantry and one other unit, and destroyers can transport only one infantry.

What we really need is folks that want to play test this.  I know a fun game would come out of it if we can find a formula to play balance the thing.

    • RE: A question for those who have dealt with Professors.

I would suspect she will give you some benefit, but it may not be enough to get a B moved to an A.  Generally the Department Head can mediate any disagreements of this sort, but you have to consider the possibility of offending the teacher or the Department Head.  I don’t understand how someone gets a C for overachieving.  If you need scholarships and such, what other writing projects are you involved in?  Do you contribute to school publications?

    • RE: Basic Philosphy Question; Which is better?

I think this variability in tech rolls and SBRs is what makes the win-loss ratios closer to 50%.  USA can risk some money on early bombers to hurt Germany.  The UK can risk some money because without SBRs and rockets they can’t do much for a few turns directly in Europe.  The rest have real decisions to make about tech.

      Frimmel,

I’d love to see someone cut that scene with your “slave girl”.  I wonder how genuine the basic Amadala picture that your “metal bikini” was.  It looks too good not to be a retouch.

    • RE: Basic Philosphy Question; Which is better?

I would liken the struggle to a comparrison of kinetic and potential energy.  The Axis start with more kinetic energy (Combat Units in position to be used) but less potential energy (immediate IPC income levels).

Under normal circumstances, the game hinges on whether the Axis can convert their kinetic energy into a greater share of the available potential energy, before the Allies accumulate adequate kinetic energy of their own to prevent the Axis from accomplishing their goal.

Remember, in this description kinetic energy is defined as combat units in a position to be used.  Not only do the Allies have to build more fighting units, they have to build transports and defend them adequately to get the fighting units into the fight.

    • Rules for subs in AAP40

I have always felt the rules for subs were unfavorable and that subs should be given a bigger role in the A&A series.  Historically, subs and aircraft were the big killers of the oceans and I have not seen that in A&A.  Could someone let me know if the sub rules are getting any new thoughts in the game?

Look fellas, the rules are quite clear.  You must use pictures from the movies.  These other entries, however enticing, are outside the rules.  I sentance you to the following for failure to abide by the rules:

You must start a new thread called, “Star Wars pictures dino doesn’t want you to see,” and you must each post ten pictures to make amends.

      Now let the contest resume.

BTW, wow!  I never went to any comic book thing like that before.

    • RE: If US lost the battle of Midway

      @ABWorsham:

Much like Wake Island, if Midway were occupied by Japanese troop, the IJN would been hard pressed to resupply the Midway garrison.

This get’s to the point.  In my opinion, the Japanese plan to attack Midway was foolhardy and a misuse of their resources.  If Japan had won the battle decisively, say killing all three US carriers and losing only one themselves, they still have one major challenge that the US will beat them up with.  I do not think Japan could have supplied Midway and would be forced to abandon the men there in a few months.  I believe this because of the different approach to the use of Submarines by both sides.  The Japanese used subs to augment their naval strategy against the US naval forces.  We used our subs to disrupt their supply lines.  Because of this philosophical difference, the Japanese appear to have neglected planning for how they would use Midway.  The US could and would have used subs to prevent any ship from ever making it to Midway.  Without resupply by ship, the Japanese forces on Midway would have been forced to surrender.

In the meantime, Japan would have initially tried to get a substantial base there to work on the remainder of the Hawaiian Island chain, oblivious to the long term logistics problem.  Initially supplies would trickle in until the US sub net was firmly established.  The Japanese might well try and ferry in gas and bombs from carriers operating west of Midway and then continue to use the airfield to attack Hawaii.  Unfortunately for the Japanese, this would strain their petroleum reserves and place at least one carrier group in danger of US attack.  It would have probably taken two carrier groups just to maintain the supply lines to Midway eating up more petroleum and naval assets.

This is similar to the events that played out at Guadalcanal.  One difference is that Guadalcanal was much closer to the Japanese supply base so it wasn’t the strain the Midway campaign would have been.  Also, the many islands in the Guadalcanal theatre helped protect the Japanese supply lines.

Midway was a wonderful success for the US as everyone knows.  However, even a Japanese victory would have become a defeat which actual history managed to conceal.

    • Universal pieces

As you fellows know the FMG project is getting closer to releasing the first national set of pieces, the Italians.  Proceeds from that release will be used to fund development for the other nations.  I have been waiting patiently as many others here.

He has several companion projects including the nation specific dice and dice tower.  He has other projects under development including a new set of chips to indicate stacks of troops and some status markers.  If this is all news to you, check out the FMG thread sticky at the top of this forum.  A word of caution; the project is so popular the thread is currently approaching 40 pages.

Another project seldom mentioned is the universal pieces (generic pieces, pieces all nations use such as a factory).  With the introduction of the newest A&A games there will be more of these including minor factories and bunkers.  I read something about ports and airfields possiblt becomming a piece rather than a marker on the board as in the curent AAP game.  I don’t remember seeing a thread discussing what pieces a Universal set should include.  Let’s kick that idea around here so FMG won’t get bored when he runs out of nations to build

I play AAG and two pieces I would like to see are Supplies (a small stack of three crates) and Airfields (although I don’t think this is the sort of airfield we will see).  AA guns might be reissued in a better quality piece, and we expect to see both regular and minor factories.  Also, remember the fleet tiles from AAP?  I would like to see some more of those along with an Army tile for ground units.

    • Have you heard about the FMG A&A pieces?

      Guys,

I don’t know how many folks here scan all the boards, but there is a fellow that formed a company called Field Marshall Games, FMG for short.  He is making accessories for A&A and is about to release new pieces for the A&A games.  The first release will be a complete set of Italian pieces.  The other nations will follow and I think this is going to be a great thing.  If you have time, check out this thread.

      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=13894.0

It is already over 35 pages, so it will take a long time to read.  But the essence is he is about to take the next step and take pre-orders for the Italian pieces.  I bought a set of special dice from FMG and I am happy with them.  He is also selling a dice tower.  He plans to add other stuff.  I hope he gets plenty of support so he can fund the development of all his projects.  Take a look.  The set will include some new pieces which may help with your house rules.
