BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY, (1887-1976), He was born in London on Nov. 17, 1887. After attending St. Paul’s School, London, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in 1908 and received a commission as a lieutenant in the infantry. He served in France and Belgium during World War I. Rising in rank to major general, he commanded a division in Palestine and Transjordan in 1938-1939.

At the outbreak of World War II he went to France in command of a division. Having evacuated his men from Dunkirk in 1940, he was given command of the 5th Corps in Britain. In 1941 he was assigned to a key post in the defense against a possible German invasion.

I think playing the U.K. is what you make of it. The Allies can win with a mediocre British player, however a creative player as Britain can completely change the game. Next time you play U.K. try to think outside of the box, get creative, do something unexpected. You may not be successful but what the hell; it’s just a game. Have some fun!

Also, I think it is a bit of an assumption to say that Patton would have overextended himself at D-Day. The Allies, at the time of the D-Day landings needed aggression. To delay would have given the Germans more time to regroup. The only reason I can see to keep Patton out of D-Day was deception. I think the Germans were slow to commit reserves, in part, due to the fact that Patton and his ghost army were set to cross the channel else ware. Patton was a man who was born to lead an Army, just like Ike was born to lead a nation.

      Yanny,

I’m not sure what you mean about Korea. He obviously didn’t win the war, but what is it that you see bad about Mac? The landings at Inch’on and the encirclement of the KPA are classic Macarthur.

One that hasn’t been mentioned who deserves some acknowledgement is Macarthur. His Island hopping Strategies where excellent. He saved time material and lives bypassing strongholds cutting off the supplies and bringing areas to submission.

I can be tough to come to a conclusion as to who was the best Leader of WWII or any time for that matter. Who knows what Rommel may have accomplished if he had the resources of Monty or Patton.

      Jamus:
I help if I can E-mail me and I will try to hook you up.

      Green:
I haven’t played Kremlin, but my advise would be, go over the rules as best as you can and then look for a game on the Zone. When you jump in let the host know it is your first game and “usually” they’ll be pretty cool about it. Also you might try getting on the message board at Spring and asking someone to do a test game with you. You’ll find that there is usually someone who will help you out. Everyone wants more players at the clubs.

My only advise for club play is stay out of the politics!

      General:
I agree completely, but I can only get a game together once a month or so. Playing on-line or by E-mail helps keep me sharp.

      Hey John,

Perhaps “Idiot” was a little strong. I think Montgomery was overrated. The Allies, Britain in particular, needed heroes during the war. Monty fit the bill perfectly, an eccentric 100% British Leader. I think he received more credit and support than his ability deserved. I know it is the obvious example, but I have to bring up Market-Garden. Also compare Monty and Patton’s reactions at the battle of the bulge. Also isn’t it funny that The Germans monitored Patton’s presence to attempt to determine where the invasion of Western Europe would be?

I’m going to try to get a game together early next month we can discus it further if you like.

    • RE: A&A tournaments, player rankings etc

I just checked on my ranking in AAMC. I’m listed as 190th out of 400. that sounds bad but I only have one compleated game on record. My point is there are 400 people that have been active in the last 45 days.

I think opening moves are fairly standard with a few variations, after that the game is always different.

It only takes a few minutes to register and I’d be glad to help you through the mechanics of your first game if you would like.

    • RE: A&A tournaments, player rankings etc

There are several clubs that do exactly that. They organize tournaments, provide rankings and ratings for members, they set up standardized rule sets, they all have discussion boards for strategies finding opponents etc and best of all they are for the most part free.

AAMC, IAAPA, Spring 1942, Balance of Power, and there are others.

      These are the two I visit most;

First off, welcome aboard. For some reason it makes it easier to discuss things with someone when you can put a name to their words.

I play mostly face-to-face games, but I do play by E-mail occasionally at AAMC (www.aamc.net). I believe it is possible to play 5 player team games there if any one is interested. (Although I have read the strategies of most people here) my name there is the same as here.

Also as a side note, I believe that Rommel was probably a better general tactically than Patton. I think Rommel knew how to use his forces to the maximum ability. Patton was good at anticipating the moves of his adversaries (Sicily, Market Garden). I think Montgomery was an egotistical idiot (Sicily, Market Garden). And since he was mentioned and happens to be one of my all time favorite Generals, I think Thomas Jackson (Stonewall) was good at confusing his opponents. In fact I believe one of his sayings was always “confuse mislead and mystify” the enemy.

      Just my opinions.

Jackson was shot in the shoulder and died of comlications, a .50 cal slug has a way of creating compications that way.

Rommel commited suicide to spare his family.

    • RE: Japan first strategies

Funny you should post this strat. I am playing a game right now (via E-mail) where the UK abandoned India to go into Africa. At the end of turn 2 Japan’s IPC level is 41 and I have 2 territories bordering Russia. I took out India, Sinkiang, China and Soviet Far East on the first turn. This was only possible because India was abandoned on the first round. With a strong UK in Africa Germany abandoned Africa and squared off against Russia. Feeding the Eastern Front with Inf. and waiting for the Japs to cripple Russia enough to begin an all-out offensive.

You have a big brass pair for some one who posts anonymously. I’ll have a go at you. Here is my E-mail address

By the way Patton beat Rommel in Africa, and he would have in Europe, but you know the rest of that story.

    • RE: Operation Sea Lion

I haven’t tried this yet but I think that Germany can save all their IPC’s on the first turn, attack the british ships, taking convoy routes when possible, and then wait to see what the UK builds. Most likely it will be an anti-sub build.

If it looks plausible in the second round plop down an Invasion Fleet Hit convoy routs and ships and invade on turn three.

I think this only works if the UK doesn’t expect it also probably only works once. However, the second time you try it and the British fortify the island just build tanks for Russia.
