    • RE: Battle of Prokhorovka (aka Kusk)

You’re missing some key units… most notably the Panther, but also others such as the Elefant and Su-152.  Also for aircraft this is where the model of Stuka AAM made was actually used - the JU 87G Tank Buster (I really would have prefered a different version, but I digress…).Â

I’m assuming ‘T-40’ is just a typo and supposed to be T-70. I’m also assuming you mean the Churchill Crocodile going by your point total. An M4A1 and Soviet Lee might be appropriate units to add. I can’t figure out which German units you mean, as no combination seems to add up to 187 points. Which Tiger? Which Panzer IV? The SS Panzer IV F2 (and adding the SS Panther, despite the date) would probably be good choices, since they were Waffen-SS units.

The way you have it right now … well 187 points to 317 doesn’t sound all that fun. As is, it’s conceiveable the Germans could win, just highly unlikely. Any strategy for them would have to be based on keeping the Tiger alive and at long range; once its even disrupted the game is pretty much over. Most of the other units are going to be one shot wonders; the Panzer IIIs are pretty useless against T-34s and KVs at range, and one hit from pretty much anything does the Marder in.  In any event I think that the biggest point is that the game will not play out historically - the Germans have absolutely no incentive to attack; it’ll likely be suicide.

I also distrust wikipedia as a primary source of information; it’s usually not completely accurate.

    • RE: Hello

Most of the time the Ammo Depot is worth the points as long as you are aggressive with your units - the more units attacking the more effecient it becomes. Though this doesn’t mean you have to be suidically aggressive.  Just be aware that if the depot lasts beyond the first round or two you’re lucky; expect it to die.

The L3/35 is overpriced, but can be useful at taking out support units. Despite it’s low 2/2 defence it might survive simply because your opponent won’t bother with it unless he has nothing better to do. With Speed 4 and Excellent Suspension you can zip around to try and take out any depots or command units.  It’s dice aren’t the best, but good enough. I wouldn’t recommend using more than one though, it cuts too much into your army’s points.

The set list is incorrect; it’s definately a US aircraft (and a good one too).

    • RE: How long is the miniatures game?

Something like MechanizedWarfare suggested works best; US & UK vs GE usually works well. A free-for-all is interesting to do sometimes, but often it simply ends up with two players joining up against the third who doesn’t have a chance.

    • RE: Battle of Stalingrad

We’ve done two mini campaigns so far; one in the Pacific and another in North Africa.

Each player has a piece that represents them (one for the Axis and one for the Allies); it has certain abilities and begins with a set rank. Once you gain enough VPs (through victories, destroying units, rallying troops, etc) you move up a rank which mat entitle you to more SAs/CAs, improved initiative, etc.

At the very least it gives some continuity between games instead of a series of unrelated events not everyone cares about; if you’ve invested time into your squad then you (usually) are much more interested in the games; and even if you technically lose, if your squad does well you can still count it as a win.

Mamayev Kurgan alone would make for an interesting battle, that hill changed hands so many times.

After this battle there’s a chance we might (re)start a campaign, though no specifics have been decieded upon yet.

      @MechanizedWarfare:

Damn you DL!!  I was going to suggest a similar Italian army.  Yea that build works fine.

It’s the one I’ve had posted for some… months now, just adding the depot in and taking a few infantry out. However I realized a horrible mistake I made with that army. I forgot the fearsome Italian Hero! It’s getting too low on infantry now so I took out a tank for more infantry… I think in the long run (which Carros don’t usually see) it will be better for the army, though it does reduce it’s AT a bit.

      Carro Aramato M13/40 x4 (or x5)
      Blackshirt x7 (or x4)
      Brixia M34 Mortar x1
      Fucile Modello 1891 x1
      Stalwart Hero x1
      Ammo Depot x1

      100 Points / 1 Hero / 15 (or 13) Units.

    • RE: How long is the miniatures game?

A standard game of 100 points on a 2x2 map is usually done in an hour, sometimes less depending on how things go.

Scenarios, larger builds and/or maps, or using a lot of infantry can cause the game to go longer.

    • RE: Battle of Stalingrad

Due to unforseen circumstances the date of Stalingrad has been pushed back a week. However I’ve got more information on the game for you:

      ARMY GROUPS

      • German forces will consist of an infantry regiment and some armour support (mostly Flampanzers and StuGs), as well as Luftwaffe Bombers (Me110s).
      • Soviet forces will consist of roughly an infantry battalion reinforced by a guards company, and without armour
      • We decided for this game to, for the most part, leave vehicles out of it; the battle is to be about infantry.

      SPECIAL RULES

      Partisans

      • These units are being used to represent the Russian Soldiers infiltrating through the sewers.
      • Ignore the regular partisan rules; instead these units may be placed at the end of any of your movement phases; they trigger defencive fire from any adjacent enemies.

      Snipers

      • Snipers may fire at other units with Superior Camoflauge.
      • Snipers get +1 cover against other Snipers if they have not attacked or defencive-fired yet this round.

      STALINGRAD MAP

      • The map will be 1x5; each map will have a different objective such as the Tractor Factory or the Docks.
      • Germans may deploy up to 2 hexes out; Russians may deploy anywhere else.
      • Objectives will be marked with depot units which do not otherwise have an effect on the game.
      • Objectives are worth 1 VP to whoever controls them; there are no other victory conditions.

      Railroad

      • Treat as clear terrain but gives 5+ cover to infantry.

      Ruined City Hex

      • Any unit may enter this hex; there is no road bonus.
      • Gives 4+ cover to infantry and 5+ cover to vehicles.
      • Blocks LOS
      • Any Artillery, Aircraft, or Assault Guns may attack this hex as if it were a unit; treat the hex as a Defence 5/5 vehicle.
      • If an Artillery, Aircraft, or Assault Gun attacks a target in a Ruined City Hex but fails to score any successes against that unit, it makes an attack against the Hex.
      • If an Artillery, Aircraft, or Assault Gun would damage or destroy a unit in a Ruined City Hex, but the unit rolls cover, treat as if the attack was against the Ruined City Hex instead (Don’t re-roll just count the number of successes against it instead).
      • If a Ruined City Hex takes 1 or more hits in one turn, replace it with a Rubble Hex during the casualty phase.

(This one seems a bit complicated, but really isn’t; if your Artillery/Aircraft/Assault Gun hits a unit in a city hex and it fails cover nothing special happens. If it rolls cover you count the successes against the city hex instead (even if you made an AI attack - it doesn’t matter what dice were rolled). If you completely miss then you roll an attack (using AT dice) against the hex.

      Rubble Hex

      • Vehicles require a movement roll to enter
      • Grants 5+ cover to vehicles and 4+ cover to infantry
      • Doesn’t block LOS.

      Mamayev Kurgan (aka Height 102.0)

      • This terrain covers multiple hexes.
      • It requires a movement roll to enter a Mamayev Kurgan hex, but not to move from one Mamayev Kurgan Hex to another.
      • Any unit on a Mamayev Kurgan Hex can ignore terrain when determining LOS.

That army is 100 points / 14 units. It doesn’t win tournaments or anything, but it’s fun to play.

For a ‘pure’ Italian Army try this:

      Carro Aramato M13/40 x5
      Blackshirt x4
      Brixia M34 Mortar x2
      Fucile Modello 1891 x2
      Ammo Depot x1

    • RE: How is this Russian build?

One more thing about the ‘Bounce Effect’ with the Cavalry and transport tanks:

The unit being bounced still triggers defencive-fire from the appropriate units so be careful how you use it around flamethrowers, etc.

    • Battle of Stalingrad

Next week we’re doing a huge Stalingrad game; I’ll post information on the builds when I finish them and pics as I take them…

It will be long (planning thursday - weekend - thursday) and it will be bloody (tons of infantry and special rules for partisans, snipers, wrecking buildings, etc).

I haven’t actually played an AAM game in over a month now… so thought I’d start this year’s first with a bang.

    • RE: V-1 rocket

Well I don’t mean to be flippant, but they wouldn’t be; not in AAM. The V-1 rockets (and V-2) were almost exclusively used as strategic weapons and not tactical ones. I believe it was only one occasion that they tried it as a tactical weapon (late in the war to blow up a bridge IIRC); it didn’t work out too well.

If you were to insist on using them I would suggest simply similar rules to offboard artillery (Scatter range & direction) and a “rocket salvo” type area of effect.

The model is nice, but I think it’d be best used as an objective rather than a combat unit; I’d sooner see WotC bring out a Maus than V-1s…. but then look what they did to the Katyusha, so who knows.
