      @Audacity:

      Excellent!  Are you able to post pictures of these battles like you have done on some of your other epics.  I especially liked the pics from Kursk.

      I didn’t think of it for the first turn, but will definately do so for future ones. They aren’t nearly as epic as Kursk though ;)

      German forces have been defeated in all three battles, details here: http://boards.avalonhill.com/showpost.php?p=251640&postcount=14

      However when you stop to consider they were only small recon forces, the amount of damage they did to far superior Allied units is pretty good. However losing half of the Luftwaffe on the first turn is not so good.

      Herr AJGundam (Shazam)

      Thanks for the link to learn more about German Naval development.  The key to learning is asking questions!

      Maybe for gaming purposes the Americans can do a form of Lend Lease of carriers and aircraft to the Germans.

      …

      Some of us prefer the game to at least try to be historically accurate. Otherwise why even bother playing Axis vs Allies, but just use anything instead.

      I think the kety sentance is “It was launched on December 8, 1938, but was never completed, never commissioned, and never saw action.”

      I can wait a few sets for something that never was; there’s too many units that were in battles that we don’t have I’d rather see made.

      @Mechanized:

      Well hopefully Ill pull one.  If not, a battleship will make me content.  Ill post pics of what I pull when my minis arrive.  :-P

      Kind of funny (to me at least), since I got the set free from WotC pulling rares is meh for me. People look at me oddly when I get excited over destroyers and submarines.

    • RE: North Africa Campaign

      After a few initial problems the campaign has now begun.

      There are three battles already, though most of them fairly lopsided:
      L8 GE Recon Section vs 2x UK Stuart Troop and a UK Carrier Platoon (6:1 Odds for the Allies)
      T9 GE Recon Platoon vs UK Matilda Troop and 2x AU Rifle Platoons (2:1 Odds for the Allies)
      V8 GE Panzer II Platoon vs UK Recon Troop (1:1 Odds, though tactical favours the Axis)

      The Allies have made a huge push across the desert, but unfortunately many of their units were spotted by advanced Axis units. However a few did manage to slip by unnoticed. On the Eastern Side on my map (showing lines of movement) it almost looks as if that UK Recon Troop swerved to intercept the Panzer II Platoon.

      The Axis were expecting heavy resistance along the road, and were astonished when they had no contacts at all.

      Now that the Battle & Contact reports are out, the aircraft are being assigned. The Germans seem to want to send have to support the 1:2 battle against the Matildas/Australians, and the rest to scout. I’m not sure if the Allies have decided yet.

    • RE: Question on Defensive Fire

      @Audacity:

      The scenario.  An infantry soldier is in a town hex and a vehicle crosses the open ground and enters the same hex.  The soldier is entitled to defensive fire.

      The rule states the defensive fire effects (ie which hex it occurs)  is determined by the defender.  In this case that means the defender says if the effect take place in the open ground hex or if it happens in the town hex.

      Question.  If the defender awaits until the vehicle has entered the town hex, can he use his abilities to attack vehicles in his own hex with the far superior dice rolls or is Defensive fire only about direct fire

      Yes. You get to chose where the defencive-fire occurs, and if you have any special abilities such as flamethrower or close assault you can use them. Only a few abilities are worded such that they can’t be used for defencive-fire (eg the Goliath’s ). So if your unit is, for example, simply a regular infantry it will probably be best to make the defencive-fire attack in the same hex where it can use its close assault.

    • RE: Backblast and Transport

      @AgentOrange:

      Thanks, DL.  You’re right; it is a pretty expensive combo for how vulnerable it is.  However, this just occurred to me… You could transport it on a unit like an Easy Eight, that has transport, but not fighting platform.  That would make it not nearly as vulnerable, and you could still move it around with a speed of 4, and drop it off wherever you want.

      Well yes, though I personally think the E8 is an overcosted monstrosity ;) If all your going to do is transported, might as well use an inexpensive Jeep, which can then rush back to get more infantry - something the E8 is unlikely to do. If you’re not limiting yourself to US / Western Allies, then the T-34/76 is good as well.

    • RE: Backblast and Transport

      @AgentOrange:

      Okay… the other day I was going through my units and came across the M20 75mm Recoilless Rifle. (I believe that’s correct - I don’t have my units/cards in front of me.)

      Anyway, this unit has two abilities that seem to create a conflict of logic: Backblast and Light Artillery.  I’ll paraphrase…

      Backblast - Whenever this unit attacks, it fails cover rolls for the rest of the turn.

      Light Artillery - This unit can be carried by units with the Transport ability. (doesn’t have to be gun transport.)

      What this says to me is that you can simply load it onto a halftrack that has Fighting Platform and fire from there.  Now, since the halftrack is the “protecting” unit, and thus is responsible for making cover rolls, the Backblast disadvantage is null and void.  Is that right?  (DL, I’m expecting to hear from you.  8-))

      That’s correct. Nowhere on the card does it say transports the rifle is mounted on fail cover as well.

      However putting the halftrack and rifle together is hardly the best of combos, since it’s a fairly vulnerable and expensive pairing.

    • RE: North Africa Campaign

      The campaign has begun, with forces split between the Axis & Allies. Being a neutral participant I’ve heard both battle plans, and it should prove to be very very interesting and I’m fairly sure combat will occur on the first turn. Both forces see the main road connecting the two sides as key, but are taking very different approaches to it. Today I should have all the move orders in, so hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have something to show.

    • RE: Defensive Fire Timing…....Can This be Right?

      The tactic is legal.

      As Phosphonothioic says, the counters simply go away at the end of the turn, making them fairly irrelevant. He’s also correct that it’s simply a matter of not letting your units be isolated and destroyed (divide & conquer).  It’s not paricularily broken, just annoying. But all you have to do to counter it is have supporting units.

      @Von:

      Are the new maps and the advanced Rules going to be available for sale in stores or is it only a down load thing?

      It’s available in stores - I’m not aware if it will be online yet (though I would assume it would be at some point)

      Oops…thanks DL.  I’m still kind of new to the game myself.Â

      No problem, it happens.

      It might be best to post these questions under the discussion area though - makes the more visible.

      @axisfan:

      Just another thought on this topic.Â

      I I remember rightly Avalon used to have numbers assigned to their hexes and that was used for set-up purposes. I think that it may not be a bad idea to have numbers assigned for us  that are time challenged.  I run a strategy ckub at the school and some of the games have been real good but since we only have an hour and 1/2 to get everything finished it becomes difficult

      I think if #'s were assigned to each hex it might prove useful.  The players could simply write down what haex they are on (withe the appropriate map) and resume.  It just gives more flexibility to the game.

      Axis fax out

      There’s quite a few of the maps on the site that have numbered hexes, including a blank one you could, I suppose) overlay onto the previous ones. I lack the tools and skill to do so though.

      As for new maps, here’s some previews of the new 3" hexes:

      I’m excited.  I’ve a starter and a whole case set aside for me.  Just got to pick it up now.  Too bad Chicago is 12 hours away.  I’ll be looking for people around Peterborough Ontario.

      Same province, but unfortunately a bit of a ways away.

    • RE: Lots of Questions

      I’m not sure why rules questions keep getting posted in the Variant Rules section, but here you go:

      Vinius is mostly correct, but made one error - #2) Only one vehicle may be in a hex, not one per side.

      Also, just to clarify on #4: In all standard ‘official’ games you deploy 5 hexes in from the side.

      My suggestion would be to read the latest rulebook, which can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/AAM_RuleBook.pdf

      My new campaign begins tonight with the assignment of strategic forces. There’s an outside possibility we could use another strategic commander (no guarantees though). For details see here: http://boards.avalonhill.com/showthread.php?t=18427

    • RE: A & A Miniatures Rules, Gallery, and News

      @Audacity:

      Question about the Goliath mobile bomb.  If my unit is disrupted he can not move.  However I view sending out the goliath as part of the assault phase.  He therefore recieves a penalty to his assault.  Should that penalty be on the “movement” phase of his attack or on the 12 or 8 dice that are rolled for the attack if the objective was succesfully reached?

      The Goliath ability has nothing to do with movement. You can still use it if disrupted, and disruption will not effect the ability’s two D6 rolls. It does however effect the attack roll normally.
