      It’s Friday!

      The Tenth draft has arrived!  I can’t believe it.  Hopefully at some point this project will end.

      I have made the following changes from the ninth draft:

      Added:
      Berlin City Circle.
      Panama Port (SZ27)
      Iraq Port (SZ58)

      Changed:
      SZ 49 has been divided.  (I have not renumbered the sea zones yet)
      This change required the port on Lower Egypt to move to Tobruk.

      SZ 26 has been divided.

      Redesigned Central Europe (allowed addition of Berlin City Circle).

      Reminders:
      When reviewing the map please consider both historical accuracy and game play.
      The image has been reduced by 50% for faster downloads. (Makes it a little fuzzy)
      Unfinished elements have been removed.

      Issue with Ceylon Island Port (SZ64)

      Players will use the port to reach SZ 64 but then unload directly to India and not Ceylon island.

      Thoughts?

      Glad to see some people are actually reading the threads.

      Ports without historical foundations have been added to enhance game play.  I did not just randomly place ports on the map.

      “does not exist” and “never existed” are not reason enough to remove a port.  If you don’t like a port I have added tell me why.  I am looking for discussions that provide insightful feedback not simple statements.

      Example:

      Abyssinia’s port does not have historical foundations, true.  The port was added to enhance game play and to add a new dynamic to the African Theater by allowing Italy (if the Axis control the Suez) to move troops to its holdings in Africa, giving the Suez farther reaching tactical value and allowing Italy to defend one of its VCs.

      It also gives the Southern Italian port a place to go.  (Remember ports need pairs so without it we lose the Italian mainland port as well)

      So… If my reasoning does not persuade you to keep the Abyssinia port on the map, that is fine, tell me why.

      Not all elements of this map require historical foundations.  This is a game map, “based” on a historical war.

      It was mentioned a while back that some of you would like to see the “Oil” rule from A&A Europe added to this map.

      What does the group think?

      If so I have created an icon to represent this on our map.  (See attached)

      Let me know if you want to see this rule and what territories should be consider for Oil territories.

      Ok,

      Ports
      First off, the ports are not named.  So the port on the Western United States territory is not San Francisco, San Francisco is the VC not the port.  So this San Diego debate is mute.

      Second, do not just list ports.  If you want me to consider a port, it must link to another port (Please list the linking ports as well).  If it does not then it is useless and I am not going to put it on the map I don’t care how important it may or may not have been historically.

      Third, if you don’t reference the map territories when listing ports, (ie, just list port names) I am not going to spend the time anymore, to look them up.

      Impassable
      I am planning to stick with the Revised A&A rules as much as possible.  So I feel that impassable territories should be impassable by all units.  Not to sure that the “hump” is that important and I don’t like the idea of splitting the Sahara.

      IPCs
      Have not been addressed.  They are unbalanced and need and complete overhaul.  Let’s get the map finished then we can start that discussion.

      Welcome Rowdy,
      I figured we could discuss rules once the map is complete.  But your right there will be additional rules such as strategic moves, and a new turn order, etc.

      Put an Airfield in Iceland so that planes flying from the US capital can get there in one turn.  Western France could use an Airfield, too.

      Iceland on the other hand needs an airbase so that it can be linked up with the US capital.

      Thanks for the input your list is a great help (it would be nice if you compiled a complete list when we are finish so they can identified easily).

      I did not even notice the SZ10 issue.  (Will fix)

      Your “Wake, Gilbert, West Coast” idea is the best one yet so I will add it.  (We will see what the group thinks)

      it just isn’t fun to have troops in Germany without room.  One suggestion would be to get rid of Bavaria and perhaps another spot, and move Berlin in off the coast.  Unfortunate to have Berlin fall from a sea assault in a game of this detail.

      Not a bad idea, a guy in my gaming group suggested the same thing.

      Group what do you think about this?

      I am not sure if your program would allow a “bubble” of sorts to expand Europe – it would greatly increase playability.

      By “bubble” do you mean sectional blowups like the 2nd edition map??

      So… is everyone happy with the current ports?  If not please get your suggestions up on the thread.  Remember that ports need a pair so list pairs and use the names on the map so thread members can follow the discussion easier.

      Airfields?

      Everyone happy with the current airfields.  I will be adding one on the Azores per Micoom’s suggestion.

      How about Europe or Russia? There seems to be a shortage of airfields in the Atlantic theater.

      Glad to see some new “faces” on the thread.

      Raider your suggestions are good but…

      1. Well crap, your right I see the issue.  I have not had time to really look at this but it looks like the only way to “fix” it is to add a sea zone.  This means renumbering the sea zones.  I loath the thought, where were you two weeks ago?

      Group do you agree with Raider’s suggestion?

      1. You can’t compare VCs from two different nations.  Each has a set and equal number of VCs with values.  The decision was between Hong Kong and Singapore, and Singapore won.

      3 & 4) The map is set except for game play issues like the one you discovered.  I can’t keep adding to this map it will never get finished.

      @OutsideLime:

      A Western US port would only function if you also had one in Kamchatka, Solomons, Gilberts, Wake, or Johnston…. or Cuba/East coast of Panama!

      Does anyone like any of these ports?  It is a bit odd to not have a port on the western United States.

      Currently there are 29 port icons on the map.

      Almost every territory that a port before has one now with a few exceptions.

      The major exception is the west cost of the United States it is just not far enough or too close to everything.

      One idea is to put a port on Kamchatka.  What do you think?

      I don’t care what the actual names of the ports are.

      When referring to ports refer to the territory the port will be attached to.  This will hopefully speed things up and allow people to follow the thread more easily.

      Wow, group, low turnout this week.  One post with suggestions?  That’s it?

      Is everyone happy with what has been suggested?

      The following are only two zones apart.
      Hawaii to San Diego
      West Africa to Portugal
      Pacific Northwest to Aleutian Islands

      I have added the following ports pairs.  I don’t think this will be the final list, I’m still not sure about some of them.

      Cape Town to Brazil
      Cape Town to Madras
      Madras to Australia
      Japan to Caroline Islands
      New Guinea to Canberra
      Lower Egypt to Cape Town
      Lower Egypt to Gibraltar
      Archangel to Great Britain
      Washington to Great Britain
      Great Britain to Gibraltar
      Washington to Morocco
      Tunisia to Crimea
      Malay to Shantung (or anywhere on SZ 106)

      Other thoughts:
      Port on Java??

      Gentlemen,

      I started adding the ports and realized that with the new sea zones most of the ports are broken.

      So… We need to decide what the new ports are going to be.

      When thinking of port placement you must think in pairs.  Ports are useless, if another port is not within three sea zones of it.

      Also don’t suggest port pairs, just to add port pairs to the map, please think of the game ramifications for adding the pair and to a lesser extent the historical accuracy.

      So, group.  What port pairs would you like to see on the map?

      What I have so far:

      Washington to Great Britain
      Great Britain to Gibraltar
      Washington to Morocco

      Gentlemen,

      I apologize for my absence from the thread.

      Life just gets busy sometimes.

      Now back to the map.  I have not had a lot of time to work on the map.

      So to get back on track.

      Seems that everyone is happy with the map itself and it is time to move on to the things that go “on” the map such as Ports, Airfields, etc.

      This week I would like to discuss Ports and if we get finished with them then Airfields.

      First,

      The Port Icons themselves.

      I think that the icons themselves are too big and that they distract from the map and don’t need to be so large.

      I propose reducing the icon down to maybe the size of the IPC icons.  In my opinion this would look better.

      Second,

      Ports are a game mechanic.  So keep that in mind when discussing this topic.  Yes, some historical accuracy should be involved but we can’t put a port on every territory, or represent every port that participated in the war.  Also ports only function when they are within three sea zones of one another.

      I look at ports as something that adds value to a territory.

      Example: Morocco does not have that many IPCs nor is it really critical to any master invasion plans.  But if you give it a port then that changes every thing.  With a Port at Morocco the US can (once captured) transport troops across the Atlantic in one turn, making Morocco very valuable.

      Third,

      Instead of associating a port with a sea zone why not associate it with the territory?

      This would save us from putting two ports on territories like Japan.  Instead just put the port icon on Japan and that would represent that any sea zone touching Japan is considered to have a port.

      Just my thoughts on the subject.
