When you guys are FINALLY done tweaking the game so your favorite side can win please let the rest of us know. I would just like to play the game, but everybody and their mother seems to think one setup is better and more balanced than the other. If they don’t win using the setup then they say they would using the NEW one. So we have evolved from the global with Larry Harris alpha setup to the global Larry Harris alpha plus setup to now the Larry Harris alpha plus 1 setup. I get confused when I play a game and people say “this is the setup as of Oct whatever… No this is the setup as of Dec whatever… no you obviously don’t read the boards this is the new Larry approved version…”
We both had prior family engagements, thought I mentioned that in our last email, and Germany was a paper tiger after the sealion bid and all the failed tech rolls. Yes you were pushing India, and I probably would have lost it, but the us fleet was moving and ready to rumble, not to mention ANZAC actually had a BB and a fully loaded AC fleet ready to move! UK had sealed up Africa and Germany had a one layer offensive into Russia (no backup inf on the way). By the way you slipped the +10 IPC for Japan rule into the original Alpha setup when we played. That is part of the improved Alpha i think, Jim and I had never played with the Alpha setup before that so we never noticed.
I still think it would have been close. But I distinctly remembering you folding during the auction due to time after we decided to call it (9 hours of game-play) but I may be wrong.
Also I will send you some links concerning the tactical game I mentioned that we should demo next year at Ellis Con. I have made Terrain and stuff for it over the past few weeks. Its Axis & Allies on steroids.
Sad to say it but I think my friend (Anzac, China, Russia) and I (US and UK) had him (Japan) and his German opponent on the ropes. There was some touch and go moments, especially with a surprise late sealion attempt on round 4 (he got me down to one unit but lost his airforce and his navy next turn, he only brought 2 transports worth of ground units and I had a LARGE UK fleet). Overall good game, it was at a convention in CT and we were interrupted by auctions and sales for his company etc. Doc conceded because of time that is why we need a rematch.
They are looking good docfav. I need to get back in touch with you soon, our last face to face was excellent and we need a repeat!
the USA can build a massive fleet and either take Rome or move into Africa(I have seen both done in a single turn).
Do you mean building the fleet and taking Rome and Africa in the same turn? I must be misunderstanding this post.
I say go for the “gimick” win. The first time I tried something along the lines of building German Aircraft Carriers was back in Revised. I built two (and a transport), landed four planes and went on my Merry way attacking the med coast and I took stalingrad on turn two.
This was not a gimmick, it protected the German fleet and allowed it the same range as if staying in France in revised. Global is a different game and what you would call a “gimmick” strategy in this case is null and void in Global.
Germany takes France or you can call the game on turn 1 because the germans need the extra cash otherwise they are screwed.
Once again an absolute on winning the game turn 1.
Again what stops America from doing a Japan crush if this shapes up? Thats the big issue America is too strong and in the hands of a skilled player can win the game by doing full crushes on one side or the other.
No redhunter. This is an illustration of why the game is easy in the hands of unskilled players. For the Axis to be successful they have to THREATEN on both theaters (including the western US) to keep the USA from spilling all IPC’s into the Atlantic. If you allow the US player to use its full force in one theater you are asking for defeat.
Even if Africa falls…lets assume that Italy takes it for shits and giggles that rises their IPC per turn to around 30ish. The American forces still come and kick their asses in Italy or in Africa…once America has a foothold in Africa its over for Italy…or they go annoy Germany a lot in France or Norway. America is still really strong thats why I think its worth the risk turn 1 for the UK. For the Axis player it wouldn’t be worth the risk at all but for the Allies they can afford to take chances if they wish.
OK, with this logic, since the US will eventually retake the African continent why bother wasting UK units (specifically high value units)? They could be used better somewhere else.
I agree with DeadBunny all these “Gimmick” moves don’t consider the long game. Flash in the pan at best. Like flying all the Japanese fighters to Europe…sounds like a good way to get smoked by the Chinese!
SalothStar… you are a sane voice in a void of darkness. Now prepare to be flamed by all the “I just won… you cant recover from that!” crowd.
I can’t imagine a simple IPM build for the Axis would win. They start the game about 60-70 ipc behind the Allies in income even after taking France. The two German complexes are 5-6 rounds from Russia. The supply lines are too long to take out Russia with a simple IPM. In order for a credible Sealion or Nenetsia threat, they need to build a carrier and transports. Five or six transports does nothing for a credible Sealion.
You seem to not understand that the IPM also involves a sea wall defense against an allied landing. 6 turns to Moscow as you say, then America can only land once, two turns from Berlin. Build 3-4 infantry per turn in France and coupled with your air force no landing will last. That gives you room to maneuver and pressure/take Moscow. The 60-70 IPC discrepancy is helped by the Total Unit Value (TUV) that the axis start with and should be taken advantage of. I personally think the CV build first round is necessary but some of the other ideas coming out of peoples post seem non logical.
This is sort of related. Does anyone feel the scale of the Atlantic Ocean is too small? I think it should take longer and be harder for US to smash into europe so easily. Seems like Atlantic is too small compared to Pacific.
Actually the Atlantic is too small if you take real scale into consideration. Do you really think the Pacific is the same size as the Atlantic?
You wouldn’t lose Africa…The axis can’t take South Africa on turn 1 and thats the only way the UK loses Africa. So idk where that idea came from.
Also if the UK fleet surives turn 1 game is over because UK is safe enough to be untakeable and now they can annoy the hell out of Germany with fighter and bomber strikes. Plus transports every once in a while. That is forces Germany has to keep in France to prevent an invasion thus(unless Russia roles horrible or is really playing bad) Russia can easily defend long enough for the USA to get forces into the war and the game is just downhill from there.
I would take the 40% chance(assuming I could do it) to take Rome turn 1 just to piss the Axis off and dirvirt them a turn or 2 as they can ill afford for things not to go according to plan. And if you lose its not a huge deal in the long run.
Just an example of poor planning. Once again a low luck

I won on turn 1 strategy. The loss of the starting units in Africa set up the African take over, it does not happen first turn, but will more than likely happen with those units wasted.
From reading here and my limited number of games, America likes to go 100% in the Atlantic.
I have been reading that also, which I feel is a Mistake for America to do that. If a Japanese player sent all of his planes to Europe I would run rampant over the pacific with the Allies. You can place all ship builds in the Pacific and move them to the Atlantic if needed. Without Japans planes most of their ground units in Asia will be helpless and it would entice India and Anzac into motion. I would even consider preempting Japan with a UK attack if the big offensive units are gone.
In the scenario that’s being talked about here Germany places little to no ground units for two turns (CV and factory, then 8 transports etc). I feel that this may be deciding factor in the long run. With average dice rolls it may work but all it takes is a few rounds of good defensive hits to throw it off.
Another “gimmick move”, oh look I just won first round. What did you win? 10 ipcs? And a lost Africa. Plus the loss of Rome for UK considering Germany just takes it back. Whats the loss of 10 ipcs in the course of a game? Even if Italy cant build they are still not out.
IPM?
Another example of why this game will never be won, except in lucky situations, by gimmick moves that either “win” the game in 3-5 rounds or in the first round. Its called Infantry Push Mechanic and it has won every game that its used in. Read the boards of some of the other games to find out the details.
Even if you take Moscow for one turn, unlikely but possible, you have no supply line that is worth it to back it up. Your victory is only won for a round and then Germany is a hollow tiger, and so is Japan. You have hamstrung both major Axis powers to do this. No Atlantic wall, no reactionary force, no win. Not with sane allied builds and a strategic outlook.
I just played at a Convention and my team (of course we have played extensively together) would have won based on IPM, the constant supply of fodder without the loss of high powered units. The other team conceded, but it was a given with time considering their waste of high powered units…
I’ve been hearing around the boards a plan to add subs to the sz 95 fleet to even out odds. I personally think its the best idea floated yet.
Gimmick win, if at all, with a proper Russian palyer IPM will win.
troll.
It’s November 11th here, that means it’s cold. Outside? Eat me.
November 11th is vets day maybe he has a point?
Whoa! Who let this person in? grin grin grin
qwertyuiop is right about getting outside though. Maybe tomorrow instead of sitting in my faculty lounge to check out AA.org I will sit outside and drink tea whilst using my laptop and wi-fi connection to peruse this fine forum.
We should all get out and maybe get a fresh perspective on the situation. Balancing will take months, if not years, to really be sure of an outcome. Lets let the record be created by the record (of axis vs allies wins) and debate fully when its been out for more than 3 months.
