    • RE: Best way to help Italy?

      @teslas

      Send subs to take out UK cruiser in 93

      Kill the boats in 93 G1 and land the planes in Southern Italy. 2 German planes (if both survived attack on French fleet) now available to scramble against Taranto.

      G1 - don’t land any planes in West Germany (air base) and leave the 1 trns you start with unprotected in SZ 113. The only thing that can hit the unprotected trns is the UK bomber. If they take the bait (lots of people can’t help but go after unprotected trns), then that bomber can’t take part in Taranto.

      Italy needs to land in Syria turn one. ignore Egypt. You can take Egypt later.

      If UK using Gibastion strat, Italy will have 2 good options on I1

      1. If you would like to do a Sealion, send your entire fleet to Syria and land your two tanks/two inf on Syria. UK will cross the med with their planes and prob their boats too. Germany buys a bunch of trns next turn and UK too far away to do anything about it.

      2. If you are not planning on Sealion, send your entire fleet to Syria and land troops on both Syria and Cyprus. Cyprus will prevent the ftrs on Gibraltar for attacking your boats. Cyprus will most likely deny UK NO for rest of game so that’s good too. (this assumes UK didn’t activate Greece).

      hmmm, UK should activate Greece turn one if doing Gibastion. planes can land there if Cyprus taken

      @Krieghund

      UK1, the SZ 111 fleet was spared. Germany dropped an AB in Holland with 3 ftrs, 110 is empty.

      On UK noncombat phase they move the 111 fleet to 110.

      Can the Germans scramble?

      Reading the rule book and this forum it seems the answer is no, since it is non combat. Rule book constantly mentions combat over and over so I assume you can’t scramble during noncombat.

      Seems weird but that’s how I am reading the rules.

    • When going for Moscow as Germany...

      Do you prefer amassing one large army and plodding along territory by territory?

      Or do you like to split your army up into a bunch of smaller armies?

      Or is it situational - some times large army, sometimes smaller armies? or some weird combo of one large army, one small army, etc.

      If so for any of the options, what drives your decision?

      G2 send the 2 subs from 91 with a plane to take 109 and then convoy for up to $8 to go with the $3 from Canada

      G3 buy a bunch of trns.

      @barnee thank you, that section is missing from Pacific. I knew I read that in the past.

      “You can’t move sea units through a canal or narrow strait that is controlled by a neutral territory or by a power which you at war”

      • this sentence had me asking the question. Turkey is still neutral but now pro allied neutral so wanted to know if that changed anything.

      “Turky begins the game as a neutral territory, so neither side may move through the Turkish Straits until Turkey is captured”

      • Turkey is captured seems to answer this but it again references its neutral status. It’s that wording that made me curious.

      I don’t think I’m the first to think that some of Krieg’s rulings have been rather mind blowing. This may or may not be one of them.

      Krieg just popped into my last thread to tell someone what they said was very much against the rules - I’m glad he did because I was going to immediately start using it.

      G1 AB goes on Holland with 3 ftrs to, “protect” the surviving BB. It’s really just a challenge to UK for a fight. They can def take out the BB if they want, but at the cost of their remaining boats and some/all planes. And there is the sub convoying in 109 that needs to be dealt with.

      G3, take Scotland with your 3 trns and boats. G4 take Ireland along with London to eliminate all landing spots for US bombers.

      The AB in Holland will “protect” the BB, and then will protect your boats from US AC planes after London falls.

      I feel like if I were the allies seeing this strategy, all kinds of bells and whistles would be going off, but I can easily see most players playing right into what you want them to do - because in theory it makes sense to do it.

      Again, if UK goes Gibbastion, this won’t work and you will change course by G2.

      I’ve seen some real surprise answers from Krieg on here so I want to know what the rule is.

      I looked at the rule book before posting this. I only have Pacific rule book (Atlantic walked off somewhere). I swear there was a section on straits/canals but I can’t find it in Pacific.

      My memory of the section was it using the term, “strict neutral,” as to why you couldn’t pass through the Turkish strait.

    • RE: The Afrika Korps

      @Afrikakorps

      I have new ideas for this strategy.

      G4 Sealion with all out economic warfare of convoys and SBR starting G1. The amount of money you can remove in first 3 turns is most of their income - lot less inf defending London. (The way you get there is up to you but new strat I want to try - buy AB and destroyer - you can also buy a trns or carry over the money. 2 subs to 106 - or if you’re frisky, one sub, and save the other to convoy 119; 2 subs to 91 to take out UK cruiser; 1 sub, 1 ftr to 109; 1 BB, 3 Tac, 2 ftr to 110 - if scramble, great! no Taranto, and most likely less ftrs to defend London… If no scramble, take planes as casualties to save BB in 110; send 1 Tac, 1 ftr to 93 to take out French fleet - any surviving planes can land in Rome to scramble; 2 SB bomb London Major IC. Take all of France and Yugo, leave Bulgaria for Italy

      J1 - don’t declare war. move entire fleet with 3 fully loaded trns to Hainan, and drop a NB on Hainan turn 1. This will force Pacific to declare war immediately or else the massive fleet is sitting outside Calcutta at peace on J2 (I’ve played this out once - UK declared war immediately and arranged his 3 boats as blockers on the 3 SZ between Hainan and Calcutta. Japan eliminated all blockers using air force mostly, then NCM loaded trns and empty AC’s to Calcutta to catch planes, etc on J2)

      I1 - if UK boats in 111 are now in 109 and/or 110, send your bomber in N. Italy to bomb the London AB. If the boats moved toward Canada to survive, then bomb the London IC.

      IT’s G4 sealion for multiple reasons

      • need to find out where the 111 fleet goes
      • G2, spend $45 on inf to populate western Europe. spend rest on 1 or 2 trns (if you didn’t buy one turn one) and SB. This should encourage UK to spend all its money turn two on NB and IC in Persia - although the J1 Hainan NB may change that strat; I know it would for me.

      the usual response to successful Sealion is for US to move it’s moderate fleet and loaded trns to Morroco immediately.

      Plan for that. on G4, buy a sub for southern France. On I3, buy a trns if you need one, I4 take Gibralter, after US has landed on Morroco.

      G5 send your entire fleet (you prob dropped an AC on G4 too) and the 9 or whatever fully loaded trns at the US fleet in 91, along with the sub from S. France. One round of combat, and then retreat to SZ 92, and slam the door behind you. you can drop German/Italian destroyers here and there to block them too, but you have enough of a head start.

      London is done so med is yours. US needs to decide immediately on whether to try to liberate London or go into the med after the German fleet that is getting farther and farther away. London won’t be easy - economic warfare means there will prob be a couple inf left (tanks getting on trns) and the two Italian ftrs will be joining the party on I4

      By I6, Italy should be strong enough to take Turkey and G7 you are landing anywhere from Bessarabia to Caucasus. I know you want that Cairo NO but don’t get distracted - send everything to Russia and hit them from behind.

      The G2 inf splurge should help hold off Russia for a turn which is really all you need.

      If UK goes Gibbastion. this won’t work. You will know UK1 if they are building up Gibralter - then you change up and go Iceland - Canada, or whatever.

      I know you can’t pass the Turkish straits when they are strict neutrals, so you can attack and take Turkey to allow passage.

      What if Germany/Italy attack Turkey but don’t take it. Turkey is no longer a strict neutral but a pro-allied now. Does this change in neutrality affect the straits? Could Italy attack and fail/retreat - and then Germany can go through straits?

      Seems counterintuitive but it’s the strict neutrality that closes the strait so wondering if the change in neutrality affects the strait being opened or closed.

      I’ve read lots of posts about attacking Turkey to take it but no comments on this aspect.

      Starting R7. Wild mood swings this game. couple turns ago thought Axis had it locked up. Turn ago looked like Allies were going to win. Italian and German one-two response last turn might have swung it back to even.

      First five turns were a global battle over Persia with every country involved except US and surprisingly, Japan. The French destroyer was involved.

      Now the global battle has shifted to Caucasus. UK pac getting too big for its britches in ME as Large Japanese fleet with 5 loaded trns pivoted to Java instead of heading north. UK Pac needs to decide this turn whether to keep going in ME, or head back to Calcutta.

      Germany finally sent its tanks into Ukraine to link up with Rostov. Germany had been holding its tanks back since R3 when Russian bombers wiped them off the map. Red Skies going to wipe out the Ukraine tanks now. The Russian bombers have been holding Germany in check, but now Moscow getting it from other side so they will eventually reach Moscow - then bombers will relocate to Siberian troops to retake Moscow.

      edit: this game was the most responsible I’ve ever played Germany - their entire G3 purchase was inf for western Europe. Normally that’s pretty empty. US/UK D-Day got pushed right back into the ocean because I had so many ready inf/art in adjacent territories. and now enough planes to go after the d-day fleet.

      @SuperbattleshipYamato

      I know. Completely unnecessary I wanted to make a second vid to show a more likely option to move 4 spaces. First vid had Japan hitting with ten loaded trns. That’s not going to happen too often.

      Doing this screwed up Japan’s strategy this solo game but I told my four viewers I was going to do it so I did.

      There’s a lot of ocean on the map so this could have happened anywhere but Pacific is most likely. I don’t think boats would really line up well enough in the Atlantic to work well.

      edit: first vid would be wild in a tourney if it lined up with Germany hitting east coast.

    • RE: UK Strategy -"Middle Earth"

      @Argothair

      This is just straight OOB, but this game I added tech rolls. You had to pay for the rolls so only 4 countries got tech.

      Russia went Red Skies and bought 3 SB’s turn one. Counterattacks are blowouts when the 3 SB’s are in on it.

      Germany has been scatter brained (Japan too). On Russia’s first turn at war they sent a SB to each of the two new German factories and the third SB to one of the counterattacks. Germany didn’t bother repairing the damage next turn and instead dropped inf all over western Europe because every single inf died on G1.

      Germany and Russia keep trading the same 3 territories back and forth. I’m just starting R6 and they will only be able to take two of the 3 back this turn.

      On I5/G6, they gave up on trying to take Persia and burst into the Caucasus. The shucks from South Africa just made Persia too large to take even with a can opener, follow up. Stalingrad going down next turn as Japan has six tanks and 5 planes ready to hit it, and one space away is 5 tanks, 2 ftr, 2 tac, 1 sb.

      Russia has been slugging it out with Germany and holding its own. Now Axis is about to hit them from the south and the east so they need to turn their attention away from the west.

      Germany has rockets. I think next turn I will drop two AB’s in Romania and Slovakia to get extra damage on Moscow IC.

      Japan is in Australia and needs to figure out what to do. US has large fleet and 5 fully loaded trns in Iwo Jima. US has blocker to stop Japan from taking Hawaii in one move. IF US was going next, they will be taking Tokyo. Japan goes next, so I think they will drop an AB in Korea and create six ftr scramble with whatever boats I add. It will be too much for US to risk… US could plop into Asia but large Japan fleet in Australia can cause real pain if US gets that far out of position. US was initially trying to take back Phillipines but Japan played dosey do to keep them away and they hit Iwo instead.

      I want to be super aggressive with US, but I know that will end up costing them the game so I think they will return to Caroline Islands next turn to protect Hawaii… but then the two fleets in Japan and Australia can converge into one massive fleet to wipe out US. Gotta figure out what to do with them.

      So far UK has spent every dime on Persia and South Africa. Now that Axis has peeled away from Persia they can focus on Europe.

      US just landed decent sized fleet and 3 fully loaded trns in Morrocco with the intent to hit other side of Med to help save Persia. Now they are going to hit either Holland or Normandy and let UK set up bridges. Germany has been dropping inf all over west Europe (normally it’s pretty bare) so it won’t be easy for the Allies.

      UK pac/Persia has a lot of ftrs and they will be going to Moscow soon - if Japan goes north instead of west. UK pac has Bay of Bengal and Persia area fully stacked, and a six ftr scramble for Calcutta so Japan is going to bleed . UK has radar and India has 6 AAA. Basically, Japan is going to howl when they try to get to India. As such, Japan decided to go after Russia instead to help Germany.

    • RE: UK Strategy -"Middle Earth"

      @GeneralHandGrenade

      I’m playing a solo game where UK is using Middle Earth to turn India into a fortress. Japan did kill Anzac first. After UK took Persia turn one, Italy took Syria turn one, and Germany plopped $30 in Southern France to help Italy take Persia.

      It’s now an arms race. Germany has factory in Egypt, Italy has factory in Iraq, and UK has factory in Persia with transport shucks of troops from South Africa.

      US started out all Pacific, but on turn four realized Persia might fall so built a nice fleet with 3 trns in DC to go help UK.

      All the builds in Persia meant for India are now forced to sit in Persia. It’s UK5 now and there are two ftr in Persia that I want to send to India but feel they have to stay to defend Persia as most likely I5, G6 one two punch might take out Persia. India is a rock but spread out too thin -now and landings can be made between India and Persia with little resistance - these two territories were supposed to be stacked with troops from Persia build.

      Japan took all of Australia and NZ on turn 5, US took Iwo Jima. Japan wiped out the final China territory and has six tanks there 2 spaces from Stalingrad.

      I have no idea where solo games will end up as I’m playing each country with their own strats. When UK started Middle Earth I expected a wall of fodder from Persia to Malaya to hamper Japan. Game turned into a global war over Persia.

      Japan is the quickest to take out Persia if that’s your game as it’s possible they could do that J3.

      Axis may take Persia next turn. If they don’t there will be another 6 tanks coming following turn (and planes). Even if Axis ends up not being able to take Persia, they have effectively ended its support of India by turn 3-4.

      Germany taking its time getting to Moscow and Japan prob going to help them hitting from the east. If Persia falls Moscow will be hit from 3 sides, and then Calcutta from two sides.

      Italy and Germany focused on Persia, Japan may get there in a few turns if they want.

      If the Axis focuses hard on Persia, it cripples Middle Earth.

      edit: UK Pac dropped an AB in Ceylon with 3 anzac ftrs, and 3 UK ftrs in India along with UK, Anzac, French ships so no amphib landings for Japan on Calcutta. I mean, they could try but will lose a large chunk of their fleet doing so.

      UK also has radar and has been purchasing one AAA per turn, including one for Persia turn 3. Hitting at 2 turns the AAA into a game changer.

      Yea you can even use that to move your axis ships through the gibraltar straight without actually owning gibraltar. Just have 1 sub attack from the other side and you can retreat through a seazone you cannot even sail through.

      That’s not legal. Retreat is a form of movement, so the rules for canals and narrow straits apply. Retreat through the strait in this case would only be a legal option if only attacking subs survive.

      Same combat turn, Germany lands a transport on Gibralter. Then sub from Southern France joins a large fleet battle in SZ 91 - is the retreat then legal?
